Associations between Age-Related Hearing Loss and DietaryAssessment Using Data from Korean National Health andNutrition Examination Survey.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a major and rapidly growing public health problem thatcauses disability, social isolation, and socioeconomic cost. Nutritional status is known to cause manyaging-related problems, and recent studies have suggested that there are interaction effects betweenARHL and dietary factors. We aimed to investigate the association between ARHL and dietaryassessment using data from the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which is a nationwide cross-sectional survey that included 5201 participants aged≥50 years from2010 to 2012. All participants

The effect of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome on the central auditory system.

Background/aim: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a disease characterized by repeated hypoxia attacks during sleep. The effect of hypoxia on the central nervous system is a well-known entity. In this study we aimed to investigate the effect of OSAS on the central auditory system. Materials and methods: Twenty-one OSAS patients diagnosed by polysomnography (PSG) and 10 control subjects were included in the study. After a thorough otorhinolaryngology examination, all subjects underwent pure tone audiometry (250 to 8000 Hz frequency). The subjects with normal otoscopic examination and he

The effect of platelet-rich fibrin membrane on the repair of perforated tympanic membrane: an experimental study.

CONCLUSION: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membrane could be used successfully in the repair of tympanic membrane perforation and wound healing. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of platelet-rich fibrin membrane in the repair of perforated tympanic membrane. METHODS: After otoscopic examination, a 3-mm perforation was made in the posterior quadrant of both tympanic membranes of 50 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Venous blood was withdrawn from the rats, then centrifuged. PRF was obtained in membrane form. The membrane was placed on the right tympanic membrane perforation. The perforations on th

Animal models of chronic tympanic membrane perforation: in response to plasminogen initiates and potentiates the healing of acute and chronic tympanic membrane perforations in mice.

Tympanic membrane perforations (TMP) are relatively common but are typically not treated in their acute stage, as most will heal spontaneously in 7-10 days. Those cases which fail to heal within 3 months are called chronic TMP which attract surgical intervention (e.g. myringoplasty), typically with a temporalis fascia autograft. New materials for the repair of chronic TMP are being developed to address deficiencies in the performance of autografts by undergoing evaluation in animal models prior to clinical study. However, there is currently a lack of ideal chronic TMP animal models available,

Conductive hearing loss in children with autism.

Infantile autism is a serious comprehensive developmental disorder. The diagnosis of hearing loss or its exclusion, which often suggests suspected autism, is very important for early ENT, psychotherapy, and psychiatric treatment. One hundred children diagnosed with autism aged from 3 to 18 years, with a median age of 5 years, were evaluated. The control group of healthy children consisted of 100 children, aged from 3 to 18 years, with a median age of 6 years. Anamnesis and physical examination, including pediatric assessment and otoscopic examination, were carried out on children in both group

A case of carcinoid tumor of the middle ear.

We report here a case of a carcinoid tumor observed in the middle ear (ME), which was initially diagnosed as ME adenoma. The patient was a 64-year-old woman who was first seen in our hospital in March 2001 for a 7-month hearing loss. On otoscopic examination, a whitish mass could be observed through the intact tympanic membrane. High-resolution computed tomography demonstrated a tumor-like lesion in the ME with no evidence of bone destruction. A myringotomy and biopsy were performed and an initial diagnosis of ME adenoma was made. Light microscopy showed fragments of cellular tissue in which b

Factors affecting resolution of otitis media with effusion in children.

There is only limited knowledge of the factors which influence the outcome of otitis media with effusion in children in the long-term. This randomized controlled study assessed the therapeutic effect of adenoidectomy and adenotonsillectomy during a 5-year follow-up. Numerous pre-treatment independent variables concerning the child's upper and lower respiratory tract, atopic status and parental habits were assessed in relation to two dependent outcome measures. These were otoscopic clearance of effusion and no peak/peak tympanometric change. A total of 222 children was studied and reviewed annu

LUCID: Intelligent Informative Frame Selection in Otoscopy for Enhanced Diagnostic Utility.

Background/Objectives: Accurate diagnosis of middle ear disease remains challenging because otoscopic interpretation is subjective, while many artificial intelligence models depend on manually selected still frames from video examinations. We aimed to develop and internally evaluate LUCID, a systematic framework for automatically identifying the most informative frames in otoscopy videos. Methods: We analyzed 713 otoscopy videos from 491 patients. LUCID combines a ResNet-50 classifier for coarse eardrum-visibility assessment, BC-AdvCAM for weakly supervised eardrum localization and coverage es

A case of acute labyrinthitis due to intra-aural tick infestation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intra-aural tick infestations, though uncommon, pose a serious clinical challenge owing to the risk of acute labyrinthitis-an inflammatory condition of the inner ear. This inflammation can lead to severe complications such as sensorineural hearing loss, vertigo, and facial nerve palsy. Prompt recognition and management are crucial to prevent these adverse outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old female patient of Limbu ethnicity from Dharan presented with sudden-onset right-sided otalgia, accompanied by vertigo, emesis, and auditory impairment. Otoscopic examination revealed a t

Primary Bilateral Tuberculous Otitis Media After Kidney Transplantation: A Case Report.

We report a case of primary bilateral tuberculous otitis media in a patient who underwent kidney transplantation. This case presents unusual clinical features and histopathology from those of classical tuberculous otitis media. A 75-year-old woman presented at the clinic with purulent ear discharge and hearing loss in both ears. She had undergone kidney transplantation 6 years prior and had been taking immunosuppressant medications. Otoscopic examination and imaging studies suggested acute otitis media, which was irresponsive to antibiotics. The patient underwent surgery to eradicate the disea
