BACKGROUND: There is a considerable scarcity of reliable population-based data on the prevalence of preventable ear disorders in developing countries. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of preventable ear disorders in primary school children (aged 5 to 12 years) in northern India.

From May 2007 to May 2008 we have examined by otoscopy a total number of 214 cats, aged between 0 and 6 months, brought in for their first veterinary examination to a private veterinary clinic. All cats were of urban origin. In all positive cats we performed a washing of the ear using warm paraffin oil in order to determine intensity of infection. A prospective case review of 3 patients treated at a tertiary referral center from 1997 to 2002 are presented. Three men, age 30 to 68 (mean, 45) years, were treated for acquired cholesteatoma with skull base invasion. The author reports a recently recognised physical examination finding, otoscope fogging, for perforated tympanic membrane. Otoscope fogging is defined as condensation forming in the view field of the otoscope while inspecting the ear. In the setting of occult perforation secondary to the inability to visualise the entire tympanic membrane, otoscope fogging may provide the clinician with valuable information since medical management may differ if perforation is present.

Cholesteatoma occurs frequently with the destruction of the ossicles. The most commonly eroded ossicle has been reported to be the incus. Many studies report destruction of the long process and body of the incus. However, isolated erosion of the short process of the incus is an unusual finding.
