A total of 118 consecutive patients with a fracture of the distal radius were treated with a volar locking plate; 50 patients had no ulnar styloid fracture, 41 had a basal ulnar styloid fracture, and 27 had a fracture of the tip of the ulnar styloid. There were no significant differences in radiological and clinical results among the three groups. The outcome was good and was independent of the presence of a fracture of the ulnar styloid. A total of five patients (4.2%) had persistent ulnar-sided wrist pain at final follow-up. Nonunion of the ulnar styloid fracture did not necessarily lead to

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes following an arthroscopic-assisted reduction and volar plating (AR-VP) surgery through pronator quadratus (PQ) preservation for treating intra-articular distal radius fractures (IA-DRFs) and to assess prognostic factors that affect functional outcomes. Methods: Between March 2014 and February 2017, 54 patients who had intra-articular DRF and underwent AR-VP through the PQ preservation technique and completed 1-year follow-up were enrolled. Patients were divided into the satisfactory group (excellent and good result

The most prevalent fractures managed by trauma surgeons are those involving the distal radius. The injury occurs in two peaks of prevalence: the first peak around the age of 10 years and the second peak around the age of 60 years. Distal radius fracture management requires sensitive diagnostics and classification. The objectives of treatment are the reconstruction of a pain-free unlimited durable functioning of the wrist and avoidance of typical fracture complications. Non-operative conservative management is generally employed for stable non-displaced fractures of the distal radius with the e

Reconstruction is very important to ensure good function and quality of life after bone tumor resection. For metacarpals and phalanges, amputation and toe transfer are the gold-standard indications; nevertheless, allograft reconstruction must also be taken into account. Unfortunately, because of its inert biological behavior, it undergoes progressive resorption, with frequent fracture. Several attempts have been made to induce new vascularization in massive bone allograft, with poor results. However, neo-angiogenesis was reported with vascular loops, and we therefore hypothesized that heterolo

BACKGROUND: Calcium phosphate bone cement increases the stability of implant-bone constructs in patients with an osteoporotic fracture. The purpose of this randomized study was to determine whether augmentation of volar locking plate fixation with calcium phosphate bone cement has any benefit over volar locking plate fixation alone in patients older than sixty-five years of age who have an unstable distal radial fracture.
METHODS: Forty-eight patients (fifty unstable distal radial fractures) were recruited for this study. The mean patient age was seventy-three years. Surgical procedures were

Total wrist arthrodesis is commonly performed using fixation plates, which can produce soft tissue irritation, often require removal, and limit the ability to position the hand in space. The Skeletal Dynamics IMPLATE is an intramedullary total wrist fusion device designed to provide stable fixation while avoiding the problems associated with plates. Radial and metacarpal locked intramedullary nails are inserted and joined by a connector. Desired hand placement is achieved by selecting the proper connector length and angle, then orienting it appropriately. Fusion mass compression is obtained by

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fracture (DRF) is one of the most common orthopaedic-related traumas. DRF patients with die-punch fractures have a higher risk of loss of reduction, poorer functional outcomes, and increased risk of complications even after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). According to the three-column theory, the lunate fossa is an important part of the intermediate column for load bearing. When the distal radius fracture involves the lunate fossa, adequate anatomical reduction can have an important impact on the prognosis of wrist function. Herein, we used the combined v

The fibrous wall of the flexor tendon sheath of the thumb is reinforced by pulleys similar to those in the fingers. As cited in the literature, there are two annular pulleys A 1 and A 2 and one oblique pulley. On the basis of our investigations, this distribution was found only in 10%. In 90%, the proximal (A 1) and the distal pulley (A 2) can be seen. However, between these two annular pulleys a Y-shaped fiber complex can be dissected at the level of the base and the shaft of the proximal phalanx. This complex can be further divided into an annular part (proximal) and an oblique part (distal)

BACKGROUND: Outcome measurement following surgery is increasingly the focus of attention in current health-care debates because of the rising costs of medical care and the large variety of operative options. The purpose of the present study was to correlate quality of life after volar locked plate fixation of unstable intra-articular distal radial fractures with functional and radiographic results as well as with quality-of-life data from population norms.
METHODS: Fifty-four consecutive patients with intra-articular distal radial fractures and a mean age of sixty-three years were managed wit

Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and functional results of 67 patients with distal radius fracture (DRF), treated with a modified surgical technique that allows three-column fixation through the same palmar approach. Patients and Methods Between 2014 and 2019, we treated 67 patients using a particular surgical technique. All patients suffered DRF, classified using the universal classification system. Two different intervals were developed palmary: the first ulnarly to the flexor carpi radialis tendon for direct visualization of the distal radius and the second o

AIM: Treatment of distal radius fractures with the volar locking plate provides a stable fixation and early postoperative function. However, after intramedullary osteosynthesis systems for long bones had been established an intramedullary locking nail (Targon DR, Aesculap) for treatment of distal radius fractures was developed. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the outcomes after volar locking plate osteosynthesis (Aptus, Medartis) and intramedullary osteosynthesis (Targon DR nail) for the distal radius.
METHOD: Between 01/07 and 11/07 13 patients (average age: 60 [30-83] years) with

INTRODUCTION: Scaphoid nonunions (SN) are rare in adolescents. The use of vascularized bone grafts (VBG) from the distal radius as an alternative to conventional grafting for the treatment of established SN in adolescents is described.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The technique was applied in 13 patients with symptomatic SN resulting from fractures. All patients were male with average age of 16.5 years (15-17.5). The average period from injury to surgery was 8.3 months (4-13). Patients underwent vascularized bone grafting and internal fixation with K-wires. In 6 patients with proximal pole nonunion

INTRODUCTION: Open reduction and internal fixation of distal radius fractures often necessitates release of the brachioradialis from the radial styloid. However, whether this common procedure makes the reduction and fixation easier and affects the elbow function has not been fully understood.
HYPOTHESIS: Brachioradialis (BR) release during volar plate fixation for type C distal radius fractures makes internal reduction and fixation easier, and it does not adversely affect wrist or elbow function.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 74 patients treated with 2.4mm volar locking compression column

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular fractures of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint are commonly treated with dynamic external fixation. Most commonly used is the Suzuki modification of the pins and rubber traction system (PRTS). There are a few other modifications of the PRTS external fixators. We present an alternative pin external fixator that is simple and effective.
METHODS: Under a suitable anesthesia and image intensification a true lateral view of the head of the proximal phalanx is obtained. A K-wire construct holds the affected digit out to length with the fracture reduced and Jurgan
