Does the environment affect menopause? A review of the effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals on menopause.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals are widely distributed in our environment. Humans are exposed to these compounds not only through their occupations, but also through dietary consumption and exposure to contaminated water, personal care products and textiles. Chemicals that are persistent in the body and in our environment include dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls. Non-persistent chemicals including bisphenol A, phthalates and parabens are equally as important because they are ubiquitous in our environment. Heavy metals, including lead and cadmium, can also have endocrine disrupting properti

Porous layer open-tubular column with styrene and itaconic acid-copolymerized polymer as stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography-mass spectrometry.

Enhancing the specific surface area of stationary phase is important in chromatographic science, especially in open-tubular column in which the coating only exists on the inner surface. In this work, a porous layer open-tubular (PLOT) column with stationary phase of styrene and itaconic acid-copolymerized polymer was developed. Thermal-initiated polymerization method with strategies like controlling the ratio of reaction reagents to solvents and reaction time, confinement by the narrow inner diameter of capillary were used for preparing the stationary phase with uniform structure and relativel

Cosmetics Preservation: A Review on Present Strategies.

Cosmetics, like any product containing water and organic/inorganic compounds, require preservation against microbial contamination to guarantee consumer’s safety and to increase their shelf-life. The microbiological safety has as main goal of consumer protection against potentially pathogenic microorganisms, together with the product’s preservation resulting from biological and physicochemical deterioration. This is ensured by chemical, physical, or physicochemical strategies. The most common strategy is based on the application of antimicrobial agents, either by using synthetic or natural com

Associations between baseline allergens and polysensitization.

BACKGROUND: Identification of patients at risk of developing polysensitization is not possible at present. An association between weak sensitizers and polysensitization has been hypothesized. OBJECTIVES: To examine associations of 21 allergens in the European baseline series to polysensitization. PATIENTS/METHODS: From a database-based study with 14 998 patients patch tested with the European baseline series between 1985 and 2005, a group of 759 (5.1%) patients were polysensitized. Odds ratios were calculated to determine the relative contribution of each allergen to polysensitization. RESU

Acute and Chronic Toxicity of Propylparaben in the Freshwater Snail Biomphalaria glabrata: Effects on Survival, Growth, Reproduction, and Histopathology.

Propylparaben (PP) is a widely used preservative in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food products, and its potential toxicity to non-target aquatic invertebrates remains a concern. This study used the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata as a model organism to evaluate the toxic effects of PP through acute and chronic exposures at embryonic, newly hatched, and adult stages. Acute exposure experiments showed concentration-dependent mortality and developmental inhibition, with LC50 values of 36.69 mg/L (embryos, 168 h), 33.48 mg/L (newly hatched snails, 96 h), and 57.05 mg/L (adults, 72 h). Variability in patch test reactions--first report from the Norwegian Patch Test Registry.

BACKGROUND: A nation-wide Norwegian Patch Test Registry (NOLAR) was established in 2005 as a collaboration between six dermatology departments. International, multi-centre studies have documented great variability in the frequency of positive patch test reactions, considered as mainly due to heterogeneity of test populations. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the variability of positive test reactions by studying patch tests performed at the six collaborating departments, using standardized procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from all patch tests (n = 2089) performed in 2007-2008 as registered in t

Exposomic Assessment of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals Using Hair: A Cross-Matrix Comparison with Serum and Urine by LC-HRMS and Metabolite Profiling.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are increasingly implicated in chronic diseases, yet their biomonitoring in human studies still relies mainly on urine and serum, which capture only short-term exposure to these fast-elimination compounds. Here, we evaluated hair as a complementary and long-term biomonitoring matrix for EDC mixtures by integrating it into an LC-HRMS exposomics workflow together with paired serum and urine samples. We developed and validated a method targeting 44 endocrine disruptors from five chemical families (benzophenones, phthalates, parabens, bisphenols, and organopho

Associations Between Endocrine-Disrupting Chemical Exposure and Fertility Outcomes: A Decade of Human Epidemiological Evidence.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous compounds that interfere with the endocrine system by mimicking or blocking the action of endogenous hormones such as estrogens, androgens, and thyroid hormones. This systematic review aims to evaluate the current epidemiological evidence linking EDC exposure with adverse reproductive outcomes in males and females of reproductive age. A total of 14 observational studies published between 2014 and 2024 were included following structured searches in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The most commonly studied EDCs included bisphenol A (BPA), i

Environmental Exposures and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Review.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common heterogeneous endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, affecting around 5 to 10% of women and up to 21% depending on the applied diagnostic criteria and study population. People with PCOS may experience oligomenorrhea, androgen excess, and polycystic ovary morphology. The etiology of the disease is not completely understood, with genetics, epigenetics, endocrine, metabolic, lifestyle, and environmental factors contributing to its development and severity. Environmental exposures are an important, burgeoning field in menstrual research

A critical review of wastewater-based epidemiology as a tool to evaluate the unintentional human exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a powerful tool to gather epidemiological insights at the community level, providing objective data on population exposure to harmful substances. A considerable portion of the human exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals occurs unintentionally, unlike substances such as pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, or alcohol. In this context, this comprehensive review analyzes WBE studies focused on classes of organic chemicals to which humans are unintentionally exposed, namely organophosphorus flame retardants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), be

Exposure to Multiple Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals and Associations with Female Infertility: A Case-Control Study.

Parabens (PBs) and their metabolites (MBs), triclocarban (TCC), triclosan (TCS), bisphenols (BPs), benzophenones (BzPs), and phthalate metabolites (mPAEs) are typical endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) used in industrial production and daily life. Studies have suggested that these EDCs affect the reproductive system and may cause infertility; however, epidemiological evidence linking EDC exposure to infertility is still lacking. Herein, a total of 302 serum samples from women of reproductive age were collected, and six categories of typical EDCs were analyzed. The results revealed that EDCs

Potential Allergens in Disposable Diaper Wipes, Topical Diaper Preparations, and Disposable Diapers: Under-recognized Etiology of Pediatric Perineal Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis in young children may be an under-recognized cause of perineal dermatitis. The diapered infant skin is uniquely susceptible to allergic contact dermatitis because of more permeable neonatal skin, a moist environment, frequent contact with irritants and resultant skin barrier breakdown, and exposure to topical products such as diaper wipes, diaper preparations, and disposable diapers. To our knowledge, potential allergens in these products have not been thoroughly catalogued or studied. OBJECTIVE: We explore and review potential allergenic ingredients in

High throughput analysis of solid-bound endocrine disruptors by LDTD-APCI-MS/MS.

The development of a high-throughput method for the analysis of 14 endocrine-disrupting substances in environmental solid matrices has been investigated. Selected compounds were: hormones (estrogens and progestogens), parabens and triclocarban. The ultrafast method (15 s per sample) is based on the laser diode thermal desorption-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (LDTD-APCI) coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). This novel approach was tested and validated in three different solid matrices (municipal sludge cakes, aquatic sediments and agricultural soils) and its performance was e

Severe adverse cutaneous reaction to insulin due to cresol sensitivity.

We present the case of an 80-year-old lady known to be sensitive to chlorocresol (4-chloro-3-methyl phenol) who developed severe erythrodermic exfoliative dermatitis with atypical features 2 weeks after commencing subcutaneous insulin. All medications except insulin were stopped, without major improvement. It was noted that the insulin contained m-cresol (m-methyl phenol) so a parabens-based insulin was substituted. There was a significant improvement in her clinical condition within 72 hr. Further patch and intradermal testing to the insulin and m-cresol was planned, but she developed a nosoc

Methyldibromoglutaronitrile is an important contact allergen in The Netherlands.

From 15 May to 15 December 1994, 2943 patients suspected of having contact dermatitis (1955 women, 988 men) were patch tested with methyldibromoglutaronitrile 0.3%, 0.1% and 0.05% pet. 119 patients (4.0%; women 4.1%, men 3.8%) proved to be allergic. 71% of the reactions were considered to be relevant. In 2/3 of the patients, causative products were cosmetics, in 1/3 moistened toilet tissues. Testing with methyldibromoglutaronitrile at lower concentrations (0.05% and 0.1%) and with commercial allergens (Euxyl K 400 and methyldibromoglutaronitrile, both containing methyldibromoglutaronitrile 0.1

Allergic and toxic reactions caused by cream bases in dermatological patients.

Synopsis Irritant and allergic reactions from cream bases observed in eczema patients are reviewed. The frequency of allergic reactions to the ingredients of vehicles in eczema patients is an indication of allergic potential for normal skin. Against this background, hypoallergenic fragrances are still very difficult to produce and a proper mixture for epicutaneous testing is lacking. Among preservatives, parabens are obviously safer and less allergenic than chlorocresol and sorbic acid. Propylene glycol (PG) is very popular for its many beneficial properties. However, it is also an irritant an

The effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals on ovarian- and ovulation-related fertility outcomes.

Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is unavoidable, which represents a public health concern given the ability of EDCs to target the ovary. However, there is a large gap in the knowledge about the impact of EDCs on ovarian function, including the process of ovulation. Defects in ovulation are the leading cause of infertility in women, and EDC exposures are contributing to the prevalence of infertility. Thus, investigating the effects of EDCs on the ovary and ovulation is an emerging area for research and is the focus of this review. The effects of EDCs on gametogenesis, uterine f

Smart formulation: extending AI-based stability prediction to compounded liquid dosage forms using KNIME.

Reliable prediction of beyond-use dates (BUDs) for compounded oral liquid formulations remains challenging because stability depends on complex interactions between active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) properties, formulation composition, packaging, and storage conditions. This issue is increasingly relevant in the evolving European regulatory landscape, where certain magistral preparations traditionally compounded extemporaneously may, under defined conditions, be prepared in advance, reinforcing the need for scientifically justified BUDs. Smart Formulation Module II was developed as a data
