Two own clinical observations concerning the paraneoplastic syndrome are reported: Gynecomastia and hypertrophic osteoarthropathy. The two symptoms appeared as primary manifestation of a bronchial carcinoma and an intrathoracically situated teratoma. Renal cell adenocarcinoma can be one of the great masqueraders in medicine. More common extrarenal manifestations of renal cell carcinoma include fever, anemia and gastrointestinal symptoms. Other rarer systemic symptoms are caused by amyloidosis, neuromyopathy and tumor thrombus. Humoral manifestations include polycythemia, hypercalcemia, galactorrhea and Cushing's syndrome. Metastatic disease commonly presents as the initial symptom.

A young woman with mild to moderate hypertension and normal PRA, serum potassium levels, and urinary aldosterone excretion rate was found to have a renal tumor by selective renal arteriogram. Between January 1981 and December 1988 a total of 95 patients underwent surgery for adrenal tumors. In 24 cases (25.3%) a so-called "incidentaloma" was found. While seven of these tumors showed hormonal activity, in seventeen patients the tumor was hormonal inactive. The size of the tumors ranged between 2 and 11 cm. Histologically all tumors were found to be benign neoplasms. BACKGROUND: Virilization is associated with either ovarian causes, including polycystic ovary syndrome, hyperthecosis, and ovarian tumor, or with adrenal causes, including tumors and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. A 34-year-old woman with a long-term history of amenorrhoea, headache and visual disturbances was operated for a hypothalamic tumor which could be completely removed. Postoperatively the patient developed a transient SIADH-syndrome and deep vein thrombosis; otherwise the clinical course was uneventful. There has been no sign of tumor recurrence at a follow-up period of fifteen months. Histological examination of the tumor revealed an ectopic pituitary adenoma with production of ACTH and TSH shown by immunohistochemistry.

Clinical manifestations and endocrine functions were evaluated in 17 children with suprasellar germinoma. Polyuria and growth retardation were the most common initial symptoms. Physical and neurological examinations revealed diabetes insipidus in 17, growth retardation in five, and visual disturbance in three of the patients. 185 patients with hyperprolactinaemia and prolactinoma were evaluated in a retrospective investigation. 128 patients were treated surgically whereby the prolactin serum level in 47% of the macroprolactinoma and 60% of the microprolactinoma patients was normalised (prolactin less than 25 ng/ml, no radiological evidence of tumor).
