Rapid fluctuations in atrial fibrillatory electrophysiology detected during controlled respiration.

Heart rate during sinus rhythm is modulated through the autonomic nervous system, which generates short-term oscillations. The high-frequency components in these oscillations are associated with respiration, causing sinus arrhythmia, mediated by the parasympathetic nervous system. In this study, we evaluated whether slow, controlled respiration causes cyclic fluctuations in the frequency of the fibrillating atria. Eight patients (four women; median age 63 yr, range 53-68 yr) with chronic atrial fibrillation (AF) and third-degree atrioventricular block treated by permanent pacemaker were studie…

Role of the autonomic nervous system in osteoarthritis.

Joint homeostasis is affected by local and systemic processes. Catecholaminergic and cholinergic fibers innervate the synovium, trabecular bone, and periosteum. Several studies have investigated the involvement of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in joint homeostasis and the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA). Various resident cells of osteoarticular tissues express receptors for sympathetic and parasympathetic neurotransmitters (norepinephrine/epinephrine and acetylcholine, respectively), which enables them to respond to autonomic stimuli. Furthermore, some of these cells are also able

Autonomic dysfunction in children with Hirschsprung's disease.

During embryogenesis, two different transmembrane receptors, Ret and Ednrb, together with their ligands, respective, GDNF and endothelin-3, are involved in the migration and differentiation of enteric ganglion cells, sympathetic neurons and melanocytes from the neural crest. Mutations in these genes have been found in a number of human and murine neurocristopathies, including Hirschsprung's disease. RET and GDNF knockouts suggest that they are involved in a correct autonomic nervous system formation. The aim of this study is the evaluation of the autonomic nervous system in patients with Hirsc

Autonomic nerve activity indexed using 24-h heart rate variability in patients with burns.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) is a noninvasive method used to quantify fluctuations in the time interval between normal heart beats. The purpose of this study was to compare the autonomic nervous system functioning of patients with burns to healthy participants after their burn scars had been re-epithelialized. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors prospectively performed 24-h HRV monitoring in 60 patients with electrical burns, those with other major burns, those with other minor burns, and 10 healthy participants. Analysis of HRV in the time and frequency domain was performed. RESU

Increased Sympathetic Outflow Induces Adaptation to Acute Experimental Pain.

BACKGROUND: There are interrelationships between the autonomic nervous system and pain. This study aims to explore the effect of different autonomic manipulations on pain perception and modulation. METHODS: Twenty healthy subjects (10 men and 10 women, mean age 25 ± 3 years) participated in this single-blinded, semi-randomized, controlled study, which included 2 study visits. Warm detection thresholds, heat pain thresholds, conditioned pain modulation (CPM), and pain adaptation were tested before and after administration of phenylephrine, clonidine, yohimbine, and saline. RESULTS: Changes in

Nine-year follow-up study of heart rate variability in patients with Duchenne-type progressive muscular dystrophy.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the progression of autonomic dysfunction in patients with Duchenne-type progressive muscular dystrophy (DMD) over time by using heart rate variability. BACKGROUND: Although previous studies suggest the presence of autonomic dysfunction in patients with DMD, the precise cause is not known. On the other hand, it is well known that analysis of heart rate variability provides a useful, noninvasive means of quantifying autonomic activity. High frequency power is determined predominantly by the parasympathetic nervous system, whereas low freq…

Differential secretion of proteins by rat submandibular acini and granular ducts on graded autonomic nerve stimulations.

1. The influence of graded parasympathetic and sympathetic nerve stimulations on the secretion of protein from rat submandibular gland was studied. Peroxidase was used as a marker for the acini and rat tissue kallikrein (official nomenclature rK1) as the marker for granular ducts. Tonin (rK2) was also measured, and the ratio of rK2:rK1 was calculated as an indication of the cellular route of secretion. 2. Continuous parasympathetic nerve stimulation caused a copious flow of saliva that had a low protein content. The secretion of peroxidase (acini) showed a gradual moderate increase as the freq

Glucocorticoid deficiency with achalasia of the cardia and lack of lacrimation.

Four recent reports describe a multisystem disorder in which ACTH insensitivity is associated with achalasia and alacrima. We report studies on a male patient with this rare triad. The patient had alacrima from birth; isolated glucocorticoid deficiency had been diagnosed at 3.5 years of age and achalasia at age 6. The possibility that this syndrome could be due to a parasympathetic degeneration has already been proposed; the cause of the glucocorticoid deficiency, however, remains unclear. Parasympathetic function in other areas was investigated to determine whether there might be a more gener

Secretory interactions between the sympathetic and parasympathetic innervations of the submandibular gland in the anaesthetized cat.

Interactions between the sympathetic and parasympathetic innervations of the submandibular gland have been investigated in the anaesthetized cat. At low frequencies of chorda lingual (parasympathetic) stimulation, simultaneous stimulation of the ascending cervical sympathetic nerve in bursts (20 Hz for 1 s at 10 s intervals) increased the flow of submandibular saliva, but the effect was never more than additive. The output of protein was consistently reduced by simultaneous stimulation of both the sympathetic and parasympathetic innervations, below that evoked by stimulation of either alone. S

Parasympathetic function in Huntington's disease.

Parasympathetic function in 7 Huntington's chorea patients with a duration of the disease ranging from 1 to 20 years, was evaluated by studying R-R intervals during quiet and deep breathing and Valsalva manoeuvre. All 7 patients were free of neuropathy, orthostatic hypotension, heart or lung disease and had had no medication for at least 15 days prior to hospitalization. Seven normal subjects served as controls. On the whole, the responses of the Huntington's chorea patients were not significantly different from those of the controls. Abnormal responses to all the tests were received in only o

PACAP-containing intrapineal nerve fibers originate predominantly in the trigeminal ganglion: a combined retrograde tracing- and immunohistochemical study of the rat.

Pituitary adenylate-cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) is a neuropeptide originally isolated from the hypothalamus and located in many n … atonin secretion, the PACAP-containing neurons of this ganglion could be considered a subset of the parasympathetic nervous system. The presence of neurons with a parasympathetic function in a ganglion that has been considered a purely sensory ganglion, is a new concept in neuroanatomy.

Autonomic cardiovascular responses to tilting in patients with Alzheimer's disease and in healthy elderly women.

The cardiovascular responses to tilting and breathing were studied in 24 patients with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 54 healthy control women aged between 75 and 96 years in order to study the parasympathetic and sympathetic heart-rate control. The cardiovascular response to tilting and breathing showed no age-associated decrease in the healthy control women. During rest, the AD patients had lower mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure but the same heart rate as the control patients. After tilting, the AD patients had a greater increase in heart rate, and the mean systolic blood

[The autonomic nervous system and disorders of heart rhythm. II].

The authors present in their review recent findings on the importance of the autonomous nervous system in disorders of the cardiac rhythm. They emphasize its modulating action in the development, maintenance and termination of many arrhythmias. Vegetative nervous influences may play a part in people without organic heart disease but are manifested more markedly above all at sites of previous damage. Mechanisms by which the autonomous nervous system influences the development and course of arrhythmias are very complicated and so far not completely elucidated. In addition to a generalized tonus

Cardiovagal modulation upon postural change is altered in Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction in Huntington's disease (HD) might affect both the sympathetic and parasympathetic branch of the ANS. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The pattern of linear heart rate variability we found in mid stage HD patients points towards a predominately reduced cardiovagal modulation compared with healthy subjects, which might influence HD patients' susceptibility for cardiovascular complications such as syncopes and cardiac arrhythmias.

Effects of yohimbine on submaxillary salivation in dogs.

1. The effects of yohimbine (0.5 mg kg-1 i.v.) on both resting and parasympathetic and sympathetic stimulation-induced submaxillary salivary responses were investigated in the anaesthetized dog. 2. Salivary secretion was increased significantly for a period of 45 min following an injection of yohimbine. 3. Sectioning of the chorda tympani (but not the cervical sympathetic) nerve abolished the yohimbine-induced increase in resting salivary secretion and potentiated that elicited by electrical stimulation of the chorda tympani nerve. 4. These results show that yohimbine increases submaxillary se

The origins of innervation of the esophagus of the dog.

This study defined the origins of extrinsic efferent and afferent innervation of the normal canine esophagus. When all the layers of the wall of the 3 esophageal regions (cervical, thoracic and abdominal) were injected with horseradish peroxidase (HRP), labeled nerve cells were found in the nucleus ambiguus (NA) and parasympathetic nucleus of X (PX) of the brainstem. Most labeled cells in the NA were located in the compact column (retrofacial nucleus) while labeled cells in the PX were located in separate rostral and caudal areas. There was no somatotopic organization in either the NA or PX. L

Parasympathomimetic influence of carbachol on local cerebral blood flow in the rabbit by a direct vasodilator action and an inhibition of the sympathetic-mediated vasoconstriction.

1 Two sorts of effect of carbachol on local cerebral blood flow (caudate nucleus) have been studied: (a) a direct action on the arterial smooth muscle; (b) an interaction with the adrenergic (sympathetic) constrictor system which innervates the vascular system of this nucleus. 2 Continuous measurements of the following variables were performed in lightly anaesthetized rabbits: local blood flow (caudate nucleus), arterial blood pressure, PaO2, PaCO2. 3 After blockade of the nicotinic synapses in the superior cervical sympathetic ganglion by local hexamethonium injection, carbachol was infused i

Norepinephrine and heart rate variability: a marker of dysautonomia in chronic Chagas cardiopathy.

The involvement of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in Chagas' disease has been the subject of many studies, which have become more numerous since Köberle's pioneering work in the 1950s, showing the partial or total destruction of cardiac neurons. In order to investigate ANS involvement in the pathogenesis of chronic Chagas cardiopathy, seventy-five patients with the condition were examined and divided into four groups, according to the Los Andes classification: I-A, I-B, II and III. Groups I-A and I-B included patients at an early stage of cardiac involvement; group II, patients at an advan
