This paper presents an epidemiological model for typhoid fever epidemics or paratyphoid diseases with an enteric course, as well as a deterministic approach for the quantitative representation of this model. The model has been tested against one typhoid and two paratyphoid epidemics which occurred in the Federal Republic of Germany. It was possible to simulate the course of these epidemics with sufficient precision, and to obtain information on the effects of various interventions (e.g. oral vaccination or hygiene measures).

Distribution of tetracyclines and their effect on interaction of the cells in the immune response were studied on pigs and rabbits non-vaccinated, immunized with formolvaccin against paratyphoid fever and experimentally infected with the paratyphoid causative agent. It was found that oxytetracycline and tetracycline administered parentally to the animals formed complexes with the proteins and especially with albumins and gamma-globulins, were rapidly adsorbed by the lymphocytes and consumed by the cells of the reticulo-macro- and micro-phage systems, epithelium of the kidney cannaculi and the …

Guangxi is a province of China endemic for enteric fever. Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi A has been found to be causing more and more … id, which is an indicator of reduced efficacy of ciprofloxacin treatment. The emergence of epidemic paratyphoid fever occurred after large-scale use of the typhoid Vi vaccine, but little is know about why it emerged. This is of particular concern in the post Vi vaccine era due to the emergence and worldwide spread of multi-drug resistant S. Paratyphi A strains and …

Typhoid and paratyphoid fever remain endemic diseases in Thailand with wide variation in subnational incidence trends. We examined these trends alongside contextual factors to study potential interactions and guide control strategies for this disease. Culture-confirmed typhoid and paratyphoid fever data from 2003 to 2014 were collected from the Ministry of Public Health website. Contextual factor data were collected from various sources including World Health Organization/United Nations Children's Fund Joint Monitoring Program, United Education Statistical World Bank database, World Bank, Deve…

INTRODUCTION: This study will develop the first human challenge model of paratyphoid infection which may then be taken forward to evaluate paratyphoid vaccine candidates. Salmonella Paratyphi A is believed to cause a quarter of the estimated 20 million cases of enteric fever annually. Epidemiological evidence also suggests that an increasing proportion of the enteric fever burden is attributable to S. Paratyphi infection meriting further attention and interest in vaccine development. Assessment of paratyphoid vaccine efficacy in preclinical studies is complicated by the lack of a small animal

Ancient pathogen genomics is an emerging field allowing reconstruction of past epidemics. The demise of post-contact American populations may, at least in part, have been caused by paratyphoid fever brought by Europeans. We retrieved genome-wide data from two Spanish soldiers who were besieging the city of Barcelona in 1652, during the Reapers' War. Their ancestry derived from the Basque region and Sardinia, respectively, (at that time, this island belonged to the Spanish kingdom). Despite the proposed plague epidemic, we could not find solid evidence for the presence of the causative plague a…

In the period between 1.1.1974 and 31.12.1978 phage typing of 2058 strains of S. typhi and 1672 strains of S. paratyphi-B was carried out. 4 … fever with 53 cases (phage type 3aI var. 1). The increasing number of imported cases of typhoid and paratyphoid fever from other countries is remarkable. The age distribution of typhoid and paratyphoid bacilli carriers shows that persons who are older than 60 years represent the age group in which carriers occur most frequently.

3 cases of enteric fever (2 paratyphoid and 1 typhoid) associated with IgA nephropathy were reported. Salmonella Vi antigen was demonstrated in the glomeruli. The clinical syndrome disappeared after enteric fever was treated. Possible pathogenesis was discussed relating this intestinal infection to IgA nephropathy.

BACKGROUND: Enteric fever is an acute systemic infectious disease associated with substantial morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), with a global burden of 14.3 million cases. Cases of enteric fever or paratyphoid fever, caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi A (S. Para A) have been found to rise in many endemic and non-endemic countries. Drug resistance is relatively uncommon in S. Para A. Here we report a case of paratyphoid fever caused by ceftriaxone resistant S. Para A from Pakistan.

Seventy-one patients suffering from typhoid or paratyphoid fever were treated with trimethoprim. Sixty-three were cured. Only three patients continued to excrete Salmonella typhi in stools at the time of discharge from hospital. Trimethoprim alone is a suitable agent for the treatment of enteric fever.

BACKGROUND: Typhoid is an important public health challenge for India, especially with the spread of antimicrobial resistance. The decision about whether to introduce a public vaccination programme needs to be based on an understanding of disease burden and the age-groups and geographic areas at risk.
METHODS: We searched Medline and Web of Science databases for studies reporting the incidence or prevalence of typhoid and paratyphoid fever confirmed by culture and/or serology, conducted in India and published between 1950 and 2015. We used binomial and Poisson mixed-effects meta-regression mo…

Fevers without distinguishing symptoms in persons who have visited tropical or subtropical areas is an increasing health problem in most western countries. The condition may be caused by several different microbes, but among cases diagnosed in Norway five infections dominate: falciparum malaria, vivax malaria, typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever and dengue fever. Primary measures should be taken against immediate life-threatening diseases e.g. typhoid fever and falciparum malaria.

Paratyphoid fever is an acute infection caused by Salmonella paratyphi A, B or C. The disease is transmitted from person to person by fecal-oral way. Typical for typhoid fever are splenomegaly, bradycardia, fever, constipation or mild diarrhoea oftten associated with abdominal tenderness. We present the case of patient who was infected by Salmonella paratyphi C while his travelling in Asia.

Nepal has a high burden of enteric fevers. An observational study conducted in a tertiary-level hospital in Nepal over 11 years (2014-2024), reviewing hospital records of all blood culture-positive cases of Salmonella Typhi and Paratyphi in children, showed a gradual decline in blood culture-positive enteric fever cases with year-to-year variability. Typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV) was introduced into the national immunisation schedule of Nepal in 2022. We observed that the proportion of Salmonella Paratyphi cases has increased in the post-typhoid conjugate vaccine years compared with the pre-

A controlled study was performed to evaluate the incidence of gall bladder and biliary duct disease in chronic typhoid and paratyphoid carriers. Eight chronic carriers were compared with a comparable group of control persons who had previously had acute typhoid or paratyphoid fever without developing a chronic carrier state. By combined surgical and radiological evaluation biliary calculi were detected in 88% of the carrier group and in 11% in the control group. This difference is statistically significant (p less than 0.02). No difference in biliary function was found between the two groups.

Salmonella Paratyphi A (S. Paratyphi A) is a highly adapted, human-specific pathogen that causes paratyphoid fever. Cases of paratyphoid fever have recently been increasing, and the disease is becoming a major public health concern, especially in Eastern and Southern Asia. To investigate the genomic variation and evolution of S. Paratyphi A, a pan-genomic analysis was performed on five newly sequenced S. Paratyphi A strains and two other reference strains. A whole genome comparison revealed that the seven genomes are collinear and that their organization is highly conserved. The high rate of s…
