Perfusion Computed Tomography Scan Imaging in Differentiation of Benign from Malignant Parotid Lesions.

Introduction  The most common site of salivary gland tumors is the parotid gland. Computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and sonography are imaging modalities to differentiate benign from malignant parotid tumors. Objective  The aim of this study is the evaluation of the diagnostic value of perfusion CT for differentiating histological categorization of benign and malignant parotid tumors. Methods  A total of 29 patients with parotid neoplasms were enrolled in this study. Mean age and all CT perfusion variables (gradient and permeability, blood flow [BF], blood volume [BV]…

Clinicopathological features and treatment outcomes of the rare, salivary duct carcinoma of parotid gland.

BACKGROUND: Salivary ductal carcinoma (SDC) of parotid gland is a rare and aggressive entity; accounting for 1-3 % of all malignant salivary gland tumors, 0.2 % of epithelial salivary gland neoplasms, 0.5 % of salivary gland carcinomas, and 1.1 % of parotid gland carcinomas. Here in we aimed to evaluate the clinico-pathological features and treatment outcomes of parotid gland SDC in Saudi population. METHODS: Among 38 patients with parotid malignancies, who were treated in two major tertiary care referral cancer centers between December 2007 and December 2014, seven cases (18.4 %) were found

Surgical management of benign tumors of the parotid gland: the advantages of extracapsular dissection compared to traditional surgical techniques.

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland tumors represent only 3%-6% of all head and neck neoplasms, and approximately 70% of these tumors are located in the parotid gland. Most of these tumors are found in the more abundant superficial portion of the parotid gland, lateral to the facial nerve (FN). For many years, the location of the facial nerve between the superficial and deep segments of the parotid gland hindered adequate tumor extirpation. Several surgical options are available for the treatment of benign tumors in the parotid gland, but there remains no universal agreement on what the optimal surgi

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the parotid gland. A case report.

Dental clinicians should be familiar with the modalities used in the clinical setting that can help to identify the presence of a tumor and to distinguish a benign from a malignant lesion. We present a case report to demonstrate the systematic approach and techniques used in the diagnosis of a malignant neoplasm, a mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland. Ultimate diagnosis is determined by microscopic analysis of a surgical specimen.

Spinal metastasis at the cervicothoracic junction from acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland: Case report.

BACKGROUND: Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) accounts for only 1% of all parotid neoplasms. Spinal metastases of these tumor are extremely rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 21-year-old patient had two prior partial resections of an ACC of the parotid gland followed by radiotherapy. Two years later, the patient presented with a 3-month history of cervicothoracic pain. The cervical spine magnetic resonance imaging revealed a pathological vertebral fracture secondary to metastatic infiltration of the D1 and D2 vertebral bodies contributing to spinal cord compression. The patient underwent a two-staged approa…

Can Magnetic Resonance Radiomics Analysis Discriminate Parotid Gland Tumors? A Pilot Study.

Our purpose is to evaluate the performance of magnetic resonance (MR) radiomics analysis for differentiating between malignant and benign parotid neoplasms and, among the latter, between pleomorphic adenomas and Warthin tumors. We retrospectively evaluated 75 T2-weighted images of parotid gland lesions, of which 61 were benign tumors (32 pleomorphic adenomas, 23 Warthin tumors and 6 oncocytomas) and 14 were malignant tumors. A receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was performed to find the threshold values for the most discriminative features and determine their sensitivity, …

Primary Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma Arising from Ectopic Salivary Tissue within an Intraparotid Lymph Node.

Ectopic salivary tissue is commonly found in intraparotid and periparotid lymph nodes. Warthin tumor is the most common tumor arising in ectopic salivary gland tissue and in intraparotid lymph nodes. Although rare, neoplastic transformation of the ectopic salivary tissues is conceivable and other types of salivary gland neoplasms arising in intraparotid lymph nodes have been reported. Herein we report a rare case of a 32-year-old Kuwaiti male who presented with a mass in the right parotid gland. A preoperative fine needle aspiration suggested Warthin tumor. The patient underwent a superficial

High-grade malignancies of the parotid gland: identification with MR imaging.

Most tumors in the parotid gland are either benign neoplasms or low-grade malignancies. The magnetic resonance (MR) images of 29 patients with such tumors were reviewed. These masses typically have low T1-weighted and high T2-weighted signal intensities and have clearly defined margins. The signal characteristics presumably reflect the serous and mucinous products that are characteristic of these lesions. The MR images of six patients with aggressive parotid tumors were reviewed and correlated with operative and pathologic findings. These high-grade parotid lesions are uncommon, usually have p

Chordoma of the Oropharynx.

BACKGROUND: Chordoma is a rare malignant neoplasm that predominantly arises from the axial skeleton, but can also develop in unusual locations. However, there are also rare cases of "NOS" chordoma involving the oropharyx and epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland in the same patient. According to contemporary research, chordoma is a rare malignant neoplasm that arises from the embryonic remnants of the notochord. and typically involves the clivus, sacrococcygeal bones or vertebrae. Studies have shown that the incidence of chordoma has been estimated to be one per one million p

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Metastatic to the Pituitary: A Case Report and Discussion of Potential Diagnostic Value of Magnetic Resonance Elastography in Pituitary Tumors.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an exocrine gland tumor accounting for approximately 10%-15% of all epithelial salivary neoplasms and occurs most often in the parotid and submandibular glands. Metastatic pituitary tumors are rare, and there is only 1 previously reported case of parotid ACC metastatic to the pituitary. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based technique that measures the propagation of mechanically induced shear waves through a particular tissue to determine stiffness and offers a method to evaluate tissue consistency. We presen

Widespread metachronous carcinoid tumour metastases to the head and neck: a unique presentation.

Carcinoid tumours are usually slow-growing, neuroendocrine neoplasms that primarily affect the gastrointestinal tract and bronchial tree. Although relatively rare, isolated, single metastasis to the head and neck has been reported. We present a unique case of 6 metachronous carcinoid metastases to both parotid glands, the left submandibular gland, upper lip, and thyroid, over 3 years. To our knowledge, this widespread presentation in the head and neck has not previously been reported.

Sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland.

Sebaceous differentiation in salivary gland tissue is common. However, sebaceous neoplasms within the salivary glands are rare. We present the case of a sebaceous lymphadenoma with unusual features, arising in the parotid gland of a 60-year-old male. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the ultrasound and MRI characteristics of this rare tumour. The difficulties encountered in reaching a definitive diagnosis both radiologically and histologically are described.

Potential Difficulties in Cytological Approach of Basal Cell Adenoma of Salivary Glands: The Experience of a Single Institution.

OBJECTIVE: Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is an uncommon benign epithelial neoplasm of salivary glands, which was first described by Kleinsasser and Klein in 1967 and which derives its name from the monomorphic basaloid appearance of tumor cells. This tumor represents 1-2% of all salivary gland epithelial tumors; the most common site of occurrence is the parotid gland. It usually arises in adults over 50 years of age with slight female prevalence. STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed 5 cases of parotid lesions investigated by fine needle aspiration cytology at a single institution between 2002 and 2018. RESU

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland: Clinicopathological aspect, diagnosis and surgical consideration.

The present paper describes the clinical and pathological features of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) of the parotid gland. This rare tumor represents <1% of all salivary gland tumors and arises most commonly in the parotid gland, but it has also been described in the submandibular gland, minor salivary glands and palate. EMC is considered to be a low-grade malignant tumor that may commonly recur locally after resection in 23-50% of cases. The complex and varied morphological expression of this neoplasm has attracted numerous investigators, who have presented valuable but often contra

A Rare Case of Myoepithelioma around the Left Orbit.

Myoepithelioma is a rare neoplasm of the salivary glands, generally occurring in the parotid gland and less often in the mi-nor accessory salivary glands of the oral cavity. It is known to be a rare entity occurring at unusual locations, which makes it difficult to diagnose. Such a rare case of myoepithelioma in salivary glands present at an unusual location around the left orbit is presented here.

Endocrine Mucin Producing Sweat Gland Carcinoma with Metastasis to Parotid Gland: Not as Indolent as Perceived?

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSCG) is a rare, low-grade cutaneous adnexal neoplasm with evidence of neuroendocrine differentiation, predominantly involving the eyelids of elderly. It has a striking resemblance to solid papillary carcinoma of breast which similarly displays neuroendocrine features. EMPSGC is considered a precursor of cutaneous mucinous carcinoma, and the term "mucinous carcinoma" is also recommended for hybrid lesions which reveal an invasive mucinous component associated with EMPSGC. While local recurrences are well- documented in EMPSGC, metastases had n

Primary parotid lymphoepithelial carcinoma: A case report and literature review of a rare pathological entity.

BACKGROUND: Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) of the salivary glands is a rare, but distinct, poorly-differentiated neoplasm that resembles undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinomas (NPC). Among primary salivary gland LECs, they most commonly arise in the parotid gland. These lesions have a noticeable racial predilection, mostly occurring in Asians and Arctic region native populations. They are strongly associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and are more common in EBV-endemic areas. The most common presenting symptoms of primary parotid LEC are parotid mass development and cervical lymphade
