BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is a bacterium that causes bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) in cattle, buffaloes and bison. Rapid point-of-care diagnosis or regular testing of Pasteurellosis, therefore, could contribute greatly to early detection, and screening infected animal is important. Up to now, there are no published reports on the use of recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) combined with a lateral flow dipstick (LFD) for P. multocida detection.
RESULTS: This study proposes a promising isothermal detection method for P. multocida…

Pasteurellosis is a zoonosis often caused by cat or dog bites or scratches, or by direct exposure to their secretions. Pasteurella multocida is the main pathogen involved in infections through domestic animal bites; generally a local infection characterized by its particular virulence with consequent rapid onset. Serious infection has also been reported in persons affected by comorbidity without domestic animal bite injuries. Here we report the case of a woman with lower limb exudating vesicular skin ulcers affected by liver cirrhosis, bilateral knee arthritis, septicemia with positive blood c…

We report a case of lung infection caused by Pasteurella multocida in an immunocompetent patient. Diagnosis was made both on histological analysis of a lung wedge resection, showing pyoepithelioid granulomas, and on bacteriological cultures from lung tissue. Histological diagnosis of pulmonary pasteurellosis is difficult, and other etiological causes of pyoepithelioid granulomas of the lung have to be discussed. Pulmonary pasteurellosis is particularly severe in immunocompromised patients, and should be systematically suspected in patients exposed to pets, eventhough a percutaneous exposure is…

The study aimed to establish an experimental model to investigate the pathogenesis of lung infection by Pasteurella multocida, an important cause of bovine respiratory disease. An experimental model is required to assist the development of an effective vaccine. Sixteen 8-week-old calves were challenged intratracheally with 10(9) or 10(10) colony forming units of P. multocida in either 60 or 300 ml saline in a 2 x 2 factorial experiment. All animals became dull within 2-6h post-infection (p.i.) and two calves were killed humanely because of suspected endotoxic shock. Remaining animals showed in…

This study assessed the potential of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) purified from Pasteurella multocida to cause pulmonary pathology or exacerbate lesions produced by gamma-irradiated nonviable Aspergillus fumigatus conidia when administered via the intra-air sac route in turkeys. LPS provoked suppurative airsacculitis, pleuritis, and pneumonia. Nonviable conidia produced airsacculitis and transient pneumonitis but did not elicit multinucleate giant cells, which are a feature of the inflammatory process in A. fumigatus infection. LPS in combination with A. fumigatus conidia resulted in accelerated p…

A 60-yr-old woman with a history of seropositive rheumatoid arthritis and using a low dose of corticosteroids presented with a very painful, swollen, red coloured knee with limited range of motion. Physical examination revealed a scratch on her left lower leg without discolouration or induration. Synovial fluid cultures yielded Pasteurella multocida. The pathogenetic significance of this commensal of cats and dogs in man is discussed.

Antigens were extracted from a virulent isolate of Pasteurella multocida (serotype 3, 12, 15:D) with potassium thiocyanate, and a vaccine was prepared. Pasteurella-free rabbits were vaccinated intranasally and intraconjuctivally twice with a 2-week interval and challenged intranasally with the homologous P. multocida serotype 2 weeks after the second vaccination. The vaccinated rabbits produced serum immunoglobulin G and nasal mucosal immunoglobulin A against P. multocida. The vaccine protected the challenged rabbits against clinical disease and death; however, otitis media was not prevented, …

We report a case of fatal necrotizing fasciitis in an elderly woman presenting with severe right upper-arm pain and elevated inflammatory markers in the absence of apparent skin changes or diagnostic imaging findings. Despite broad-spectrum antimicrobial therapy and supportive care, the patient deteriorated rapidly and died within 24 hours of hospital admission. Post-mortem blood cultures identified Pasteurella multocida, a zoonotic pathogen commonly found in cats and dogs. Retrospective review of the initial CT scan revealed fascial edema and soft tissue stranding, compatible with necrotizing…

Pasteurella multocida (Pm), a ubiquitous Gram-negative bacterium, causes respiratory diseases that pose a significant threat to the livestock industry. In this study, we performed whole genome sequencing, biological characteristics analysis, comparative genomics, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and pathogenicity assessment to comprehensively characterize a clinical Pm isolate (designated YPm; GenBank accession number CM129929.1) from sheep. The genome of YPm comprises 2,304,730 base pairs with a GC content of 40.3% and encodes 2,140 protein-coding genes, including 126 virulence factors a…

Poultry farming faces fowl cholera caused by Pasteurella multocida, yet genomic data are limited. Isolates from ISA Browns were identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) and sequenced (8.6, 1.4, and 1.3 M reads). De novo assemblies revealed genome sizes of ~2.4-2.5 Mb and guanine or cytosine (GC) content of ~40%.

The authors report the first case of postoperative Pasteurella multocida infection following elective standard abdominoplasty caused by indirect contamination from a cat-punctured surgical drain. A 51-year-old previously healthy woman underwent uncomplicated standard abdominoplasty but subsequently developed fever, erythema, and abdominal pain. Imaging, aspiration, and microbiological analysis confirmed infection with P. multocida. Further questioning revealed her house cat had punctured the surgical drain, which was subsequently repaired by the patient using superglue to restore negative pres…

BACKGROUND: A secondary Pasteurella multocida (Pm) infection following Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae (Mo) challenge in sheep results in severe respiratory disease. Scavenger receptor A (SRA) is a key phagocytic receptor on macrophages, which facilitates microbial clearance. However, the role of sheep SRA in Mo-associated secondary Pm infection is less understood.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The expression of SRA was found to be the highest in alveolar macrophages (AMs) compared with lung tissue and spleen using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Also, SRA was expressed in various tissues of sheep. S…

Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of many diseases of economic importance in veterinary medicine and is characterized by high zoonotic potential. Pet animals can be infected and play a major role as carriers. This study aimed to characterize the genetic diversity of P. multocida isolated from dogs, cats and rabbits, and to evaluate their antimicrobial susceptibility profiles. A total of 620 animals were studied; 51 were positive for P. multocida and 92 strains were isolated. 60.9% of the strains belonged to the capsular type A, while the remaining were classified as non-typeable. Th…

Mammalian bites present a considerable clinical problem because they are often associated with bacterial infections. Pasteurella multocida is a microorganism that commonly infects both canine and small feline bites. Zoonotic infections developing after large feline bites have been recognised, although their reports are limited. We describe a 35 year old man who was bitten by a Siberian tiger and who developed infectious tenosynovitis secondary to P multocida, Bergeyella (Weeksella) zoohelcum, and Gram negative bacteria most like CDC group EF-4b and comamonas species. The latter three bacteria …
