OBJECTIVE: To define the risk of sudden death in patients with right isomerism (asplenia) after palliation.
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 154 patients with right isomerism was identified from 1980 to 1999. Sudden death was defined as acute cardiovascular collapse from which death occurred within 24 hours.
RESULTS: A total of 620 patient-years were evaluated. The 1-year and 5-year survival was 72% and 50%, respectively. There were 22 sudden unexpected deaths (14%, 35 events/1000 patient-years). Sudden death tended to occur in infancy or early childhood (12 +/- 9 months; median, 9 months). The mech

OBJECTIVE: To assess the motor function of the left, supposedly unaffected, limbs of patients with an acute right vascular hemiplegia.
METHODS: Fifteen patients with an acute vascular right hemiplegia and 16 matched healthy controls were studied. Motor function of the left limbs of each patient was evaluated on days 20 and 90 after their stroke using four validated tools (hand dynamometer, isokinetic dynamometer, finger tapping, and nine hole peg test).

The purpose of this study was to determine the cardiac anatomy of patients with double-outlet right ventricle by angiocardiography. A total of 73 patients between the ages of one day and 11 years were examined. Eighteen pediatric oncology inpatients had 21 Hickman right atrial catheters placed for total venous access; 16 patients received parenteral nutrition. Mean duration of catheterization was 43 +/- 29 (SD) days. Four catheters had to be removed for infection or clotting. The catheter-related sepsis rate was 10%. Serious catheter-related complications were no more frequent in this population than in patients receiving only parenteral nutrition via Broviac or pediatric Broviac catheters.

Ultrasonography was performed as the first imaging procedure in 100 patients who presented with acute right upper quadrant pain suggestive of cholecystitis or cholelithiasis. In the final analysis 46 patients were found to have gallbladder disease (40 patients with cholelithiasis, 5 with acalculous cholecystitis, and 1 with a cholesterol polyp in the gallbladder).
