The use of single-use devices in anaesthesia: balancing the risks to patient safety.

Single-use devices are designed, manufactured and sold to be used once and then discarded. This paper addresses growing concerns about the quality of some devices. Single-use devices, manufactured at a lower cost to justify their disposal, are perceived to have a lesser efficacy, which may threaten patient safety through iatrogenic harm. There is, in addition, growing scepticism about the actual risk of contracting variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and other blood-borne diseases from reused surgical instruments. Interview data suggests that when choosing to use a single-use device, clinicians …

Navigating the information technology highway: computer solutions to reduce errors and enhance patient safety.

Standardized, seamless, integrated information technology in the health-care environment used with other industry tools can markedly decrease preventable errors or adverse events and increase patient safety. According to an Institute of Medicine (IOM) report released in 1999, preventable errors have caused between 44,000 and 98,000 deaths per year. Following the report, President Bill Clinton requested that the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality, a government agency, look into the issue and fund, at the local or state level, processes that can reduce errors. Funding subsequently was mad…

Herbal Products and Dietary Supplements in Radiation Oncology: Evidence, Safety, and Practical Patient Counseling.

Studies show that patients with cancer use herbal products more often than the general population. Lowering the risk of disease recurrence, symptom control, and improving quality of life are often the reasons cited for such use. However, a major concern is that few patients communicate with their oncology providers about such use. Although herbal products are perceived as natural and safe, they can lead to adverse effects and interact with prescription medications, including cancer treatments. Herb-drug interactions can render some treatments less effective or potentiate adverse effects of oth

Errors in Electronic Health Record Advance Care Planning Documentation: It's a Patient Safety Issue.

BACKGROUND: Centralized locations in the electronic health record (EHR) improve access to advance care planning (ACP) information; however, the prevalence of documentation errors in these locations is unknown. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we included primary care patients aged ≥65 years or ≥18 years with a serious illness. We verified errors using keyword queries and categorized them as "Patient Safety Errors" (e.g., ACP not in the centralized location) or "Noise Errors" (e.g., non-ACP in the centralized location). Associations between patient characteristics and errors versus no e…

Transitioning to Opioid-free Anesthesia for Pediatric Supracondylar Fracture Repairs: A Patient Safety Report.

INTRODUCTION: Supracondylar fractures are among the most common injuries in the pediatric population. Recently, there has been increased interest in developing opioid-free anesthetic protocols that achieve these same goals without the risks associated with opioid use, such as postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), delayed discharges, and respiratory depression. METHODS: Seattle Children's Hospital implemented opioid-free anesthesia (OFA) for pediatric supracondylar fracture repairs in January 2021. This patient safety report compares the clinical outcomes of these patients to those who rec…

Vibegron in overactive bladder: a comprehensive review of efficacy, safety and patient-reported outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Overactive bladder (OAB) is a prevalent and potentially debilitating syndrome that significantly impairs quality of life. Mirabegron and vibegron are β3-adrenoceptor (β3AR) agonists that provide a different mechanism of action to antimuscarinic medications. Vibegron has high β3AR selectivity and enhances detrusor relaxation without compromising voiding function. This review summarises the clinical and real-world evidence supporting the efficacy, safety and patient-reported benefits of vibegron in OAB. METHODS: A comprehensive search of the PubMed database was conducted in Decemb

Appendiceal duplication: a case report of horseshoe-shaped appendix and implications for patient safety.

Appendiceal anomalies, particularly double appendices, are rare and mainly detected during non-appendiceal surgery in adults. Misrecognizing them can have serious consequences, both clinically and legally. It is critical that surgeons pay attention to the anatomical variations of the vermiform appendix, and always consider the possibility of duplicated appendix when diagnosing a right iliac fossa pain. Misdiagnosis can lead to life-threatening medical complications for the patient, with medico-legal implications.

Effectiveness, safety, and patient satisfaction of carboxytherapy as an adjunctive treatment for periorbital hyperpigmentation.

INTRODUCTION: Dark under-eye circles or periorbital hyperpigmentation constitute a prevalent and challenging cosmetic problem with diverse etiologies and types. While modifying exacerbating habits can provide partial relief for the pigmentary and vascular factors associated with this condition, and despite the abundance of available treatment options, there is currently a lack of gold-standard evidence-based treatments proposed for curing this disorder. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of carboxytherapy in treating periorbital hyperpigmentation. MATERIAL AN

Safety of the PCSK9 inhibitor alirocumab: insights from 47 296 patient-years of observation.

The ODYSSEY OUTCOMES trial, comprising over 47 000 patient-years of placebo-controlled observation, demonstrated important reductions in the risk of recurrent ischaemic cardiovascular events with the monoclonal antibody to proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 alirocumab, as well as lower all-cause death. These benefits were observed in the context of substantial and persistent lowering of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol with alirocumab compared with that achieved with placebo. The safety profile of alirocumab was indistinguishable from matching placebo except for a ∼1.7% absolute
