ISSUE ADDRESSED: Many Indigenous Australians are dealing with a wide range of sexual health issues including contraception, HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. The Indigenous Peer Education Program provided training to young, marginalised and disadvantaged Indigenous people to become sexual health peer educators within their communities.
METHODS: The initiative comprised peer educator training, capacity building, and the development and dissemination of sexual health educational materials through an arts-based strategy. Evaluation involved a retrospective qualitative methodolo

The general public and academic researchers alike have long recognized the importance of peer relations in the lives of young people. However, three issues are notably absent from the dominant models of peer influence. First, these models neglect the affective dimension of a youth's experiences. Second, the models tend to ascribe a passive role to the youth, a stance also reflected methodologically by the absence of the youth's voice. Third, the motivational component remains unspecified; that is, why does a youth conform to peer influence? Using a framework drawn from recent social psychologi

BACKGROUND: Peer support for people with acquired neurological disability is gaining worldwide popularity, yet it is conceptually unclear what constitutes valuable peer interactions. To build a greater understanding from the lived experience perspective, this scoping review synthesised literature on how adults with acquired neurological disability experience and perceive peer support.
METHODS: Peer-reviewed literature published between 2013 and 2024 was identified through systematic searches of five databases. Thirty-two studies were included, covering a range of disabilities (e.g. acquired b

OBJECTIVE: When moving to a new country for their university studies, international students are confronted with numerous difficulties in their social and academic life. Various projects have been developed to support international students in facing these difficulties, such as peer-assisted learning tutorials. In this study, our goal was to evaluate preclinical international medical students' objective improvement of knowledge after attending a three-day peer-led revision course for the subjects 'medical psychology and medical sociology'.
METHODS: The sample consisted of n=30 international s

BACKGROUND: Recovery Colleges offer peer-led, coproduced psychoeducational courses to support people to have meaningful lives. There is limited knowledge of their use in the context of dementia. This study used a realist programme theory approach to develop an in-depth understanding of how United Kingdom Recovery College dementia courses lead to outcomes for people with dementia, families and staff.
OBJECTIVES: To build knowledge through mapping Recovery College dementia courses across the United Kingdom; conduct a realist review of evidence; identify key components of effective Recovery Coll

The adultification of Black adolescent girls, viewing them as less innocent and more adult-like, has implications for their sexual and psychological well-being. Adultification creates bias, which hyper-sexualizes Black girls, increasing vulnerability to early sexual activity, sexual abuse, and lack of support, while hindering their ability to seek protection. However, protection from parents, peers, and communities may play a critical role in mitigating this risk for Black girls. The current study examined the role of maternal, paternal, peer friendships, and communal protective factors in med

Peer support workers have lived experiences of the challenges their clients face. While research has shown peer work can benefit recovery, the negative consequences have not been clearly addressed. This study aimed to explore the experiences of compassion fatigue amongst peer support workers in homelessness services, and the coping strategies used. An explorative qualitative design was adopted. Six peer support workers, in homelessness services, were recruited via snowball sampling. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. Five themes were ident

Adolescents' peer world is highly dynamic with constant dissolution of old friendships and formation of new ones. Though many of adolescents' risky decisions involve their peers, little is known about how adolescents' ever-changing friendships shape their ability to make these peer-involving risky decisions, particularly adaptive ones, and whether this association shifts over time. In a 5-wave longitudinal fMRI study, 173 adolescents (at wave 1: Mage = 12.8, SDage = 0.52; range = 11.9-14.5) made risky choices to win money for their best friend. We assessed whether participants nominated the sa

Behaviors and relationships exist within a variety of social contexts. More specifically for the current research, victimization and friendships occur in classrooms and, increasingly, in online virtual contexts. The current research examined how the number of classroom friends and number of cyber friends related to the extent of classroom victimization and extent of cyber victimization. Research has demonstrated the importance of face-to-face friendships in relation to being a victim; much less is known about the role of cyber friends in relation to being a cyber victim or how these relationsh

Although both risk and protective factors are important components of etiological theories for antisocial behavior, far less is known about protective factors and their impact. This review summarized primary studies on the impact of different protective factors for antisocial behavior in youth. In total, 305 studies reporting on 1850 potentially protective factors were included. Each extracted factor was first classified into one of 77 mutually exclusive groups of similar factors (referred to as domains), after which a three-level meta-analysis was conducted to determine the protective effect

This study examined whether there are differences between Israeli students with learning disabilities (LD) and their typically developing peers with regard to their 21st-century skills according to their self-report and whether the differences between the two groups are greater in postsecondary education than in high school-an aim that had not been examined in depth in previous research. Findings suggest that overall (beyond type of learner), in most skills, postsecondary education students reported higher scores than high school students on questionnaires designed for self-assessment of 21st-

BACKGROUND: Intention to smoke is an important predictor of future smoking among adolescents. The purpose of our study was to examine the interaction between academic performance and parents/peer tobacco use on adolescents' intention to smoke.
METHODS: A multi-stage stratified sampling was used to select participants, involving 9394 students aged between 9-16 years in Changchun city, northeastern China. Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the individual effect of academic performance and peer/parental smoking behavior. Stratified logistic regressions were conducted

One creative way that Departments of Corrections offset costs is by relying on volunteers. Prison volunteers are a heterogeneous group, who provide various programs to incarcerated populations. One unique subset of prison volunteers are peer mentors, who are individuals who have experienced criminal justice interventions and have desisted from criminal activities. These mentors provide unique guidance to individuals who are currently incarcerated or are preparing for release. The current study analyzed responses from peer mentors (N = 51) and explored their motivations and experiences. Themati

RATIONALE: Children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, developmental language disorder (DLD), intellectual disability (ID), and social (pragmatic) communication disorder (SPCD) experience difficulties with social functioning due to differences in their social, emotional and cognitive skills. Previous systematic reviews have focussed on specific aspects of social functioning rather than broader peer functioning and friendships.

Appearance rejection sensitivity (ARS) refers to anxiously over-expecting rejection because of perceived appearance flaws. ARS has been associated with poorer mental health, which suggests coping with stress may be negatively affected by ARS. In this study, we investigated if ARS was related to adolescents' emotions and ways of coping with negative appearance evaluation two years later (T2). Other potential correlates of emotions and ways of coping were also tested, including peer appearance teasing, social anxiety, and gender, as well as reports of victimization, social status, and attractive

Childhood genetic conditions impact not only the child who is diagnosed but also the day-to-day lives of all members of a family. However, our understanding of the perspectives and needs of unaffected adolescents in families affected by rare genetic conditions is limited. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 participants aged 14-20 years, all of whom had a sibling with a rare genetic condition. An interpretive description approach was used to develop a framework that described how participants' experiences of having a sibling with a rare genetic condition shaped

Adolescents with elevated social anxiety commonly experience peer-related impairments - particularly with same-age, unfamiliar peers - stemming from their avoidant behaviors. Yet, peer-related impairments are not unique to social anxiety. For example, adolescents who experience social anxiety may also experience symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which also increase risk for peer-related impairments. Relative to social anxiety, peer-related impairments linked to ADHD symptoms more likely stem from hyperactivity (i.e., approach behaviors). These distinct pathways point

This work studies the emotional and behavioural difficulties and the personal wellbeing of adolescents under protective measures. The sample is made up of 151 adolescents in residential care between 11 and 17 years of age. The instruments used were the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI). The results indicate that a high percentage of adolescents have emotional and behavioural difficulties. We found a greater presence of behavioural rather than emotional problems in the adolescents. Similarly, we also found that females showed more emotional di

BACKGROUND: Peer support has been used as a mechanism to facilitate active engagement with healthcare amongst underserved populations. The HepCare project upskilled experienced peer support workers (PSWs) to become equal members of a service provider team, taking on advanced clinical roles normally carried out by medical or nursing specialists.
METHOD: A participatory case study approach was taken to the study following the methodological guidance of Merriam (1998). The subject of the case in our study is the advanced peer support workers (APSWs) functioning in the HepCare project as service
