Pain perception in women with menstrually-related migraine.

BACKGROUND: Cyclic hormonal fluctuations influence migraine incidence and severity. Previously, we described reduced menstrual cyclicity in estradiol levels and dermal blood flow reaction to capsaicin in female migraineurs. It is unclear whether pain perception in women with migraine is influenced by the menstrual cycle. METHODS: Women with menstrually-related migraine (n = 14), healthy age-matched controls (n = 10) and postmenopausal women (n = 15) were asked to grade trigeminal and non-trigeminal painful stimuli on a numeric pain rating scale on menstrual cycle day 19-21 (mid-luteal) and da…

Patient Perception of Musculoskeletal MR: A Survey Research.

BACKGROUND: When undergoing magnetic resonance (MR) exams, patients need to lie still in a noisy and enclosed environment for a long time. This condition, together with the anxiety burden related to the possible implications of the scan results, can entail a diagnostic outcome of poor quality. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the personal perception and experience of adult patients undergoing unenhanced musculoskeletal MR. METHODS: Consecutive outpatients undergoing unenhanced MR of spine, knee or shoulder were asked to respond to a 10-item questionnaire at the end of the exam…

Sensory auditory interval perception errors in developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a heritable condition associated with reading, visual and auditory deficits. Atypical processes involved in low-level sensory coding have been implicated. We tested the contribution made by auditory magnocellular function using a behavioural task which considered the temporal difference between pairs of identical sinewave tones. Adult undergraduates with an existing diagnosis of DD (n = 78) were compared with controls (n = 111) from the same population on error rates and response times at different interval durations. Error rates and response times increased in b

The Social Perception of Microtia and Auricular Reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the social perception of microtia and quantify the effect of reconstruction on socially perceived attributes. METHODS: Parental consent was obtained for peri-reconstruction photographs in a patient with unilateral grade 3 microtia without an underlying craniofacial syndrome. With computer simulation, the normal, preoperative microtia, and postoperative reconstruction ear were isolated and blended into the oblique and lateral views of that volunteer's face to isolate ear morphology as a variable against a constant facial baseline. These photographs were embedded into Web…

Complexity perception classification method for tongue constitution recognition.

The body constitution is much related to the diseases and the corresponding treatment programs in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It can be re … e coating calibration, and constitution recognition. Under the system framework, a novel complexity perception (CP) classification method is proposed to nicely perform the constitution recognition, which can better deal with the bad influence of the variation of environmental condition and the uneven distribution of the tongue images on constitution recognit …

Esthetic perception of smiles with different gingival conditions.

This study aimed to compare the perceptions of smile esthetics among general practitioners, periodontists, and laypeople. Photographs of smiles were taken and digitally modified to create different gingival conditions: gingival asymmetry, unilateral gingival recession, and bilateral gingival recession. These photographs were evaluated by 150 volunteers (19-70 years old) using a 100.0-mm visual analog scale. The volunteers consisted of 50 laypeople with no knowledge of dentistry, 50 general dentists, and 50 periodontists. Analysis of variance and Student t test were performed when data presente…

Functional Neuroanatomy of Vertical Visual Perception in Humans.

Vertical representation is central to posture control, as well as to spatial perception and navigation. This representation has been studied for a long time in patients with vestibular disorders and more recently in patients with hemispheric damage, in particular in those with right lesions causing spatial or postural deficits. The aim of the study was to determine the brain areas involved in the visual perception of the vertical. Sixteen right-handed healthy participants were evaluated using fMRI while they were judging the verticality of lines or, in a control task, the color of the same lin…

Subtle object location perception deficits in Korsakoff's syndrome.

(Wernicke-)Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) is a neuropsychiatric syndrome, caused by vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency often resulting from chronic alcohol consumption. KS is characterized by severe cognitive problems, such as impaired explicit memory and executive functions. Visuospatial perception (VSP) refers to the identification of objects (object perception), and the localization of objects (space perception). Object perception can be described as the cooperation between visual representation and semantic information on the objects' functional properties. Space perception is the mental represen…

Perception and pain thresholds of tDCS and tACS.

Heat stress (HS) compromises the yield and quality of poultry products and endangers the sustainability of the poultry industry. Despite being homeothermic, chickens, especially fast-growing broiler lines, are particularly sensitive to HS due to the phylogenetic absence of sweat glands, along with the artificial selection-caused increase in metabolic rates and limited development of cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Clinical signs and consequences of HS are multifaceted and include alterations in behavior (e.g., lethargy, decreased feed intake, and panting), metabolism (e.g., catabolic s

Effect of Unilateral Cordotomy on Perception of Dysphagia.

OBJECTIVES: CO2 laser medial transverse cordotomy is a permanent static procedure performed to achieve adequate functional airway in cases of posterior glottic stenosis and bilateral vocal fold paralysis. Although it is the preferred method to manage long-term bilateral vocal fold immobility, it is widely believed that cordotomy has the potential to cause aspiration. The minimal existing data on the effect surgical enlargement of the glottic airway on swallowing function is heterogeneous. Through investigation of dysphagia after cordotomy, we hope to better understand the influence of glottic

Damping Perception During Active Ankle and Knee Movement.

The mechanical impedance of the leg governs many important aspects of locomotion, including energy storage, transfer, and dissipation betwee … ing coefficient ranged from 12% to 31%, with similar performance across the ankle and knee. Damping perception performance was similar to previous stiffness perception results, suggesting that both the stiffness and damping of the environment are important for the human sensorimotor system and motivating further investigation on the role of damping in biomec …

Direct Electrophysiological Mapping of Shape-Induced Affective Perception.

Visual information may convey different affective valences and induce our brain into different affective perceptions. Many studies have found that unpleasant stimuli could produce stronger emotional effects than pleasant stimuli could. Although there has been a notion that triangle is perceived as negative and circle as positive, there has been no systematic study to map the degrees of valence of shapes with different affective perceptions. Here, we employed four shapes (ellipse, triangle, and line-drawn happy and angry faces) to investigate the behavior and electrophysiological responses, in …

Monovision: Consequences for depth perception from large disparities.

Recent studies have confirmed that monovision treatment degrades stereopsis but it is not clear if these effects are limited to fine disparity processing, or how they are affected by viewing distance or age. Given the link between stereopsis and postural stability, it is important that we have full understanding of the impact of monovision on binocular function. In this study we assessed the short-term effects of optically induced monovision on a depth-discrimination task for young and older (presbyopic) adults. In separate sessions, the upper limits of stereopsis were assessed with participan

Chemosensory perception is specifically impaired in Parkinson's disease.

Patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) exhibit a considerably diminished sense of smell. The olfactory system is intimately connected to the trigeminal system, responsible for the perception of sensations such as freshness, warmth or piquancy in odorants. Usually, olfactory impairment is associated with a similar reduction of trigeminal sensitivity. A recent study suggests that the trigeminal system is not affected in patients with PD. To test this, we evaluated perception of mixed olfactory/trigeminal stimuli in 23 patients with idiopathic PD and compared them to 22 healthy matched controls. …

Amputee perception of prosthetic ankle stiffness during locomotion.

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic feet are spring-like, and their stiffness critically affects the wearer's stability, comfort, and energetic cost of walking. Despite the importance of stiffness in ambulation, the prescription process often entails testing a limited number of prostheses, which may result in patients receiving a foot with suboptimal mechanics. To understand the resolution with which prostheses should be individually optimized, we sought to characterize below-knee prosthesis users' psychophysical sensitivity to prosthesis stiffness. METHODS: We used a novel variable-stiffness ankle prosth

Perception of Gait Asymmetry During Split-Belt Walking.

Optimization of gait rehabilitation using split-belt treadmills critically depends on our understanding of the roles of somatosensory perception and sensorimotor recalibration in perceiving gait asymmetry and adapting to split-belt walking. Recent evidence justifies the hypothesis that perception of gait asymmetry is based mainly on detection of temporal mismatches between afferent inputs at the spinal level.

Flavor Perception and Preference Development in Human Infants.

As most parents and caregivers are aware, feeding children a nutritionally balanced diet can be challenging. Children are born with a biological predisposition to prefer sweet and to avoid bitter foods such as green leafy vegetables. It has been hypothesized that this predisposition evolved to attract children to energy-dense foods while discouraging the consumption of toxins. Although this may have enhanced survival in environments historically characterized by food scarcity, it is clearly maladaptive in many of today's food environments where children are surrounded by an abundance of sweet-
