Despite a proliferation of research on disordered eating in female athletes, few studies have included male athletes. The purpose of this study was to determine which of five personality and psychological variables of interest (i.e., perfectionism, self-esteem, optimism, reasons for exercise, and appearance orientation) best predicted eating disorder status (i.e., symptomatic or asymptomatic) in male athletes. Two hundred three male athletes (Mage=20.29, SD=1.64) from three National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I institutions participated. More athletes were asymptomatic (80

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to examine the multitude of factors which may impact learning and academic performance in patients with pediatric migraine.
RECENT FINDINGS: A range of associations of varying degree were noted between pediatric migraine and conditions such as ADHD, learning disabilities, sleep disorders, and psychiatric comorbidities with regard to headache pain and school functioning. Recent literature highlights the importance of sleep in relation to headache, mood disorders, and learning in youth and the emerging role of perfectionism. Children with migrain

While psychopathological phenomena of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been well described some time ago, instead there is still need for a deeper understanding of mechanisms underlying psychopathological phenomena themselves. About this, a recently proposed concept - the 'Retrospective Identification of Motivations and Inclinations' (RIMI) - seems to have a promising explanatory capacity about different aspects of obsessive-compulsive disorder. For example, as shown elsewhere, it appears to shed new light on the so-called 'fear of self' in OCD. In this paper, the role of RIMI in expla

AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the present study is to explore the validity of the Padua inventory and two belief questionnaires: the obsessive beliefs questionnaire (OBQ) and the interpretation of intrusions inventory (III).
BACKGROUND: The Padua inventory is a 60-item self-report measurement of obsessive compulsive symptoms that measures both classic compulsive checking and cleaning behaviour as well as various types of obsessions, including impulses. Studies in several countries have provided support for the reliability and validity of the Padua inventory, including Italy, the Netherlands, N

Understanding how clergy, who begin their careers with high idealism, optimism, and compassion, burn out is difficult. One body of research suggests that clergy, among others, burn out because of the systems in which they work. From this perspective, burnout is the result of external systemic factors such as bureaucracy, poor administrative support, and difficult work conditions. The other body of research suggests that burnout is the result of intrapersonal factors such as high idealism, Type-A personality, narcissism, and perfectionism. It is our position that these two bodies of research ar

This study analyzes orthorexia nervosa (ON), an eating disorder marked by a rigid fixation on "Работает" eating. Proposed by Steven Bratman in 1997, ON shares restrictive patterns with anorexia or bulimia but is driven by food purity pursuit rather than weight control. Using Walker and Avant's conceptual analysis approach, key attributes include obsessive attention to food quality, strict dietary rules, guilt or anxiety over deviations, and social or occupational impairment. Antecedents like social media influence, perfectionism, and fitness culture may contribute, while consequences range from

The aim of the current paper is to evaluate clinical characteristics of 30 children with early onset anorexia nervosa (EO-AN; age = 12.2 ± 1.6 years) compared with 30 patients with adolescent onset AN (AO-AN; age = 15.9 ± 0.7 years) and 60 age-matched healthy controls. Statistical analyses included one-way analyses of variance with three planned comparisons and chi-square tests. Compared with AO-AN, EO-AN patients displayed more restrictive eating behaviour (p = 0.038), received more tube-feeding (p = 0.024), and had less problems with self-esteem (p < 0.001) and perfectionism (p = 0.001). Individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) engage in relentless restrictive eating and often become severely emaciated. Because there are no proven treatments, AN has high rates of relapse, chronicity, and death. Those with AN tend to have childhood temperament and personality traits, such as anxiety, obsessions, and perfectionism, which may reflect neurobiological risk factors for developing AN. Restricted eating may be a means of reducing negative mood caused by skewed interactions between serotonin aversive or inhibitory and dopamine reward systems. Brain imaging studies suggest that altered ea

This study explored the functional nature of binge eating through the development of a new self-report instrument called the Binge Eating Adjective Checklist. Participants were 405 adult females who presented to a specialized eating disorders clinic. A subset of participants with bulimia nervosa also completed additional psychometrics and treatment. Those participants who reported greater reductions in negative affective and somatic states during a binge episode were also more distressed on measures of perfectionism, self-esteem, ineffectiveness, and interceptive awareness. They were also less

OCD has been conceptualized as a disorder arising from dysfunctional beliefs, such as overestimating threats or pathological doubts. Yet, how these beliefs lead to compulsions and obsessions remains unclear. Here, we develop a computational model to examine the specific beliefs that trigger and sustain compulsive behavior in a simple symptom-provoking scenario. Our results demonstrate that a single belief disturbance-a lack of confidence in the effectiveness of one's preventive (harm-avoiding) actions-can trigger and maintain compulsions and is directly linked to compulsion severity. This dist

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a chronic condition that involves a maladaptive pattern of excessive perfectionism, preoccupation with orderliness and details, and the need for control over one's environment. It is one of the most common personality disorders in the general population, with an estimated prevalence ranging from 1.9% to 7.8%. Despite the fact that patients with OCPD often present for treatment, there is little empirical research on treatments for OCPD, and there is no definitive empirically supported treatment for the condition. This review provides an overvi

Research suggests that individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) have certain temperamental traits (e.g. perfectionism, anxiety, harm avoidance), which often onset prior to the eating disorder (ED), and may persist following recovery. Although these traits are often represented as vulnerabilities to developing an ED, there is reason to believe that within certain contexts, these traits may serve as assets. We propose that traits can be harnessed within or outside of treatment to promote long-term success, and possibly relate to recovery. To do so, the current paper will: (1) outline literature on

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the subtype of anorexia nervosa (AN) could influence the bulimic syndrome and treatment response in bulimia nervosa (BN) patients with a history of AN (BN/AN+).
METHOD: Seventy female BN patients were assessed for eating disorder, psychopathology and personality, and treated for 6 months.
RESULTS: BN/AN+ patients retained some traits of their past condition: lower body weight, higher perfectionism, and higher reward dependence. They also had more severe symptoms, longer evolution time, and worse response to treatment. A history of restricting AN was associat

The study examined the association of exercise commitment with proneness to eating disorders in 50 physical education teachers who had been practicing various aerobic sports at least three times a week for at least 5 years. Significant coefficients were found between Commitment to Exercise Scale scores, the number of weekly training sessions, and scores on the Eating Disorders Inventory-2 scales measuring Maturity Fears, Social Insecurity, Perfectionism, and Asceticism. However, no relationship was found between the Commitment to Exercise Scale and the Eating Disorders Inventory-2 variables me

The Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI; Garner, Olmsted, & Polivy, 1983) is used as a screening instrument for identifying potential anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. It comprises eight subscales: Bulimia, Drive for Thinness, Body Dissatisfaction, Maturity Fears, Introceptive Awareness, Perfectionism, Interpersonal Distrust, and Ineffectiveness. We examined the internal structure of the EDI using a principle components factor analysis, for a sample of women with no known eating disorder. The results of the factor analyses showed differences between the extracted factors and Garner et al.'s sub

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders have been associated with neurobehavioral differences in social processing and interactions. Clinically, social support is a positive prognostic factor that protects against relapse. For these reasons, interventions that modify features in the social domain may be promising therapeutic targets to improve outcomes in eating disorders. Because groups require multiple social interactions, group therapy may be an ideal format to facilitate change. However, there is currently no standard adjunctive therapy for eating disorders that targets social domain concepts in a gro

INTRODUCTION: Professional and student-athletes are at risk of developing symptoms of eating disorders (ED), including drive for thinness and muscularity due to personal risk factors (e.g., low self-esteem) and sport-specific characteristics (e.g., sport requirements). However, limited studies have focused on ED symptoms among NextGen athletes (identified in Canada as élite or relève) who compete at the provincial, national, and international levels but are not yet part of national teams. As such, they have access to fewer financial resources and support from their sport federations, which can

BACKGROUND: This study is an attempt to identify psychological markers for pupils' maladaptive states. Agggression is seen as behavior while aggressiveness is seen as the state of being ready for such behavior. Anxiety is considered a stable personality trait. Two hundred and sixty pupils of the 8th grade from five different schools took part in the research. Schools that have a selection principle for admission are called prestige schools.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to discover correlations between trait anxiety and aggressiveness among adolescents in different types of educati

We studied the relation between intrusive and repetitive hair pulling, the defining feature of trichotillomania, and compulsive and impulsive features in 1,453 individuals with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. We conducted a series of regression models examining the relative influence of compulsive features associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder, compulsive features associated with eating disorders, trait features related to harm avoidance, perfectionism, and novelty seeking, and self harm. A final model with a reduced sample (n = 928) examined the additional contribution of impuls
