Effect of Self-Hypnosis on Test Anxiety among Secondary School Students in Malaysia.

Test anxiety comprises cognitive, physiological, and behavioral reactions due to anxiety about failure or a lower academic performance score on an exam or evaluation. This study examined the effect of self-hypnosis on reducing test anxiety among upper secondary school students using a quantitative methodology with a pre-experimental design. The prevalence of test anxiety was measured using the Friedben Test Anxiety Scale (FTAS) and students' demographic data were collected. Twenty-two 16-year-old students with moderate to high test anxiety were selected for a self-hypnosis intervention over a

Effects of plyometric training on physical performance and mental well-being in young soccer players.

Plyometric training (PT) improves performance in young soccer players, but its psychological effects remain underexplored. This is especially relevant for young elite players facing early selection pressures. The aim was to evaluate the effects of unilateral and bilateral PT on performance and mental well-being in elite young soccer players according to their maturation level. Sixty-seven tier-3 male athletes (12.03±2.34 years; pre- and post-peak heigh velocity groups) were randomised into unilateral PT (n= 23), bilateral PT (n= 23), or active control (n= 21), with all groups maintaining stand

Cognitive, affective and sociological predictors of school performance in mathematics.

Mathematics is a key school subject for some of the most lucrative and economically important careers. Low mathematics performance in school is associated with low psychometric intelligence, family socioeconomic status (SES), specific mathematical abilities, and high mathematics anxiety. We used a sample of Hungarian schoolchildren (N = 102, mean age = 12.3 years) to directly compare the predictive power of general intelligence, specific mathematical abilities measured by the Pedagogical Examination of Dyscalculia (DPV), mathematics anxiety, and socioeconomic status for mathematics grades. Anxious and alert? Hypervigilance in social anxiety disorder.

The vast majority of research on attentional biases to threat focusses on selective attention, even though several cognitive-behavioral models furthermore assume hypervigilance to be important in this regard. Thus, the current study examined hypervigilance in trait and state social anxiety. We analyzed visual scanpath lengths and fixation counts of participants with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) (n = 61) and healthy controls (n = 60) in a combined visual search and eye tracking paradigm, including photographs of facial expressions. Half of all participants were randomly assigned to a state anx

Effect of Threat on Right dlPFC Activity during Behavioral Pattern Separation.

It has long been established that individuals with anxiety disorders tend to overgeneralize attributes of fearful stimuli to nonfearful stimuli, but there is little mechanistic understanding of the neural system that supports overgeneralization. To address this gap in our knowledge, this study examined effect of experimentally induced anxiety in humans on generalization using the behavioral pattern separation (BPS) paradigm. Healthy subjects of both sexes encoded and retrieved novel objects during periods of safety and threat of unpredictable shocks while we recorded brain activity with fMRI.

Grip-strength, fatigue, and motor perseveration in anxious men without depression.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of anxiety without depression on functional motor asymmetry in adult men. Thus, left-and right-hand grip strength, fatigue across trials, and motor perseveration was examined among 60 right-handed men, half of whom had been classified as anxious without depression (HI, n = 30) and the other half as nonanxious without depression (LO, n = 30). BACKGROUND: There is substantial empirical support for the notion that individuals with negative affect experience relative right anterior activity. Moreover, previous studies using other groups of interest (e.g., d

Midazolam: sleep and performance studies in middle age.

Effects of 10, 20 and 30 mg midazolam on sleep and on performance the next day were studied in six healthy adult males aged between 47 and 53 years. The study was double-blind, placebo-controlled and included another rapidly eliminated benzodiazepine (brotizolam, 0.25 mg) as an active control. With 10 mg midazolam, sleep-onset latency was quicker, and the duration and percentage of stage 2 sleep was increased over the first 6 h. Effects of 20 and 30 mg midazolam were similar to each other. Sleep onsets were earlier, total sleep times and stage 2 sleep were increased, and the sleep efficiency i

In Patients Undergoing Cochlear Implantation, Psychological Burden Affects Tinnitus and the Overall Outcome of Auditory Rehabilitation.

Cochlear implantation (CI) is increasingly being used in the auditory rehabilitation of deaf patients. Here, we investigated whether the auditory rehabilitation can be influenced by the psychological burden caused by mental conditions. Our sample included 47 patients who underwent implantation. All patients were monitored before and 6 months after CI. Auditory performance was assessed using the Oldenburg Inventory (OI) and Freiburg monosyllable (FB MS) speech discrimination test. The health-related quality of life was measured with Nijmegen Cochlear implantation Questionnaire (NCIQ) whereas ti

Predictive Value of Anxiety State During Acute Herpes Zoster for the Development of Postherpetic Neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) remains the most frequent and distressing sequela of herpes zoster (HZ). Although psychological factors are known to contribute to chronic pain, their role during the acute phase of HZ in predicting PHN has not been fully clarified. This study aimed to investigate whether acute-phase anxiety is independently associated with subsequent PHN development and to evaluate the added predictive value of anxiety assessment in clinical prediction models. METHODS: This longitudinal cohort study enrolled 99 patients with acute HZ between January 2022 and January 2

Utilizing artificial intelligence to assess academic exam anxiety, perceived stress, and achievement motivation among college students.

INTRODUCTION: Exam anxiety is a multidimensional construct combining physiological reactions and affective responses that can hinder academic performance. Academic stress reflects students' perceived pressure related to workload, deadlines, and self-evaluation. Achievement motivation refers to students' drive to attain optimal performance. This study evaluated academic anxiety, perceived stress, and achievement motivation before and after examinations and examined whether artificial intelligence can effectively assess students' psychological states. METHODS: A cross-sectional, repeated-measur

Impact and centrality of attention dysregulation on cognition, anxiety, and low mood in adolescents.

Functional impairments in cognition are frequently thought to be a feature of individuals with depression or anxiety. However, documented impairments are both broad and inconsistent, with little known about when they emerge, whether they are causes or effects of affective symptoms, or whether specific cognitive systems are implicated. Here, we show, in the adolescent ABCD cohort (N = 11,876), that attention dysregulation is a robust factor underlying wide-ranging cognitive task impairments seen in adolescents with moderate to severe anxiety or low mood. We stratified individuals high in DSM-or

Executive functioning in offspring at risk for depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Executive functioning deficits (EFDs) have been found in adults with major depression and some anxiety disorders, yet it is unknown whether these deficits predate onset of disorder, or whether they reflect acute symptoms. Studies of at-risk offspring can shed light on this question by examining whether EFDs characterize children at high risk for depression and anxiety who are not yet symptomatic. METHODS: This study examined neuropsychological functioning in a sample of 147 children, ages 6-17 years (M age=9.16, SD=1.82), of parents with major depression (MDD) and/or panic disorde

Unveiling ADHD's impact on higher education students: statistics anxiety, attitudes, and statistical literacy.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the relationship between ADHD and statistical literacy in higher education. We examined how ADHD diagnostic status (diagnosed, suspected undiagnosed, and non-ADHD) relates to statistics anxiety, attitudes, and literacy outcomes, thereby illuminating challenges associated with formal diagnosis and support access. Furthermore, we explored the roles of attitudes, anxiety, ADHD status, and academic degree as predictors of statistical literacy. METHOD: We compared three groups among 405 higher education students: students with formally diagnosed ADHD (n = 80), th

Vicarious learning of children's social-anxiety-related fear beliefs and emotional Stroop bias.

Models of social anxiety suggest that negative social experiences contribute to the development of social anxiety, and this is supported by self-report research. However, there is relatively little experimental evidence for the effects of learning experiences on social cognitions. The current study examined the effect of observing a social performance situation with a negative outcome on children's (8 to 11 years old) fear-related beliefs and cognitive processing. Two groups of children were each shown 1 of 2 animated films of a person trying to score in basketball while being observed by othe

Social anxiety and the effects of negative self-imagery on emotion, cognition, and post-event processing.

Numerous studies have shown that social phobia patients experience negative self-impressions or images during social situations. Clark and Wells (1995) posited that such negative self-images are involved in the maintenance of social phobia. Thus, the present study investigated the effects of negative self-imagery on cognition and emotion during and following a brief social situation. Specifically, high and low socially anxious participants (N = 77) were instructed to hold either a negative or control self-image as they engaged in a brief speech. Participants then rated their anxiety, performan

Comorbid Affective Symptomatology and Neurocognitive Performance in College Athletes.

OBJECTIVES: The current study aims to examine the prevalence rates and the relationship of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and comorbid depression/anxiety with neurocognitive performance in college athletes at baseline. We hypothesized a priori that the mood disturbance groups would perform worse than healthy controls, with the comorbid group performing worst overall. METHODS: Eight hundred and thirty-one (M = 620, F = 211) collegiate athletes completed a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery at baseline which included self-report measures of anxiety and depression.
