Subsurface environments hold the largest reservoir of microbes in the biosphere. They play essential roles in transforming nutrients, degrading contaminants and recycling organic matter. Here, we propose a previously unrecognised fundamental microbial process that influences aquifer bioremediation dynamics and that applies to all microbial communities. In contrast to previous models, our proposed Piggyback-the-Persistent (PtP) mechanism occurs when viruses become more dominated by those exhibiting temperate rather than lytic lifestyles driven by persistent chemicals (in our case chlorinated-hy

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants with high mobility and potential health risks. Despite growing regulatory attention, data on tissue-specific distribution in pigs remain scarce. This study aimed to assess PFAS occurrence in pig liver and muscle (longissimus dorsi, semimembranosus) to support risk-based monitoring strategies. A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed and validated for 13 PFAS, following European Union Reference Laboratory for Persistent Organic Pollutants and Regulation (EU) 2022/1428 guidelines. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is the most prominent member of a widely utilized family of compounds named Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Initially produced for use in both industrial and consumer applications, it has since been recognized that PFASs are extremely persistent in the environment where they have been characterized as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). While previous studies have demonstrated that PFOA may induce disorders of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, the precise mechanisms by which PFOA produces this phenotype and the involvement of downstream AMPK/mTOR pathways re…

Coastal environments, such as those in the Santa Catarina State (SC, Brazil), are considered the primary receptors of anthropogenic pollutants. In this study, our objective was to evaluate the levels of emerging contaminants (ECs) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in indigenous Crassostrea gasar oysters from different regions of SC coast in the summer season (March 2022). Field collections were conducted in the São Francisco do Sul, Itajaí, Florianópolis and Laguna coastal zones. We analyzed the bioaccumulation levels of 75 compounds, including antibiotics (AB), endocrine disruptors (ED…

Dioxins are high chlorine, toxic, and persistent organic pollutants that exert significant pressure on both human and the environment. From the analysis of current pollutant removal of the whole life cycle, such as integrated removal of NOx, SO2 and dioxins in a system, the dioxins oxidation activity as well as the distribution of oxidation products in the presence of SO2 are still a challenge. In this study, dibenzofuran (DBF) was regarded as a model dioxin compound, and V2O5/AC was used as a catalyst to investigate the impact of SO2 on degradation activity and the degradation path of DBF. Va…

Estuary connects the inland freshwater and open seawater, which may become a sink for pollutants from land-derived outflows, especially for persistent organic pollutants (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs). Due to complex fluctuation in estuary, it's difficult to achieve a comprehensive assessment of the pollution characteristics by grabbed environmental samples. Oysters serve as efficient biomonitors of pollution status in highly dynamic and anthropogenically impacted estuaries, like the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), South China. Here, we investigated the annual, seasonal, and spatial…

The discovery of the occurrence of inorganic pollutants in surface waters is identified in the system assessment quality. The most harmful elements are pesticides, persistent organic pollutants, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and heavy metals are still dangerous to the environment due to their general uses. Chromate has the largest concentration compared to the other metals in the wastewater industries. This work evaluates the application of the spinel p-CoAl2O4 as a photocatalyst prepared by the nitrate synthesis process to reduce Cr(VI), a hazardous metal for the environment. The p

Most persistent organic pollutants, due to their hydrophobic properties, accumulate in aquatic sediments and represent a high risk for sediment quality. To assess the toxicity of hydrophobic pollutants, a novel approach was recently proposed as an alternative to replace, refine and reduce animal experimentation: the medaka embryo-larval sediment contact assay (MELAc). This assay is performed with Japanese medaka embryos incubated on a natural sediment spiked with the compound being tested. With the aim of improving this assay, our study developed a reference exposure protocol with an artificia…

Ozone (O3) is effective for degrading persistent organic pollutants in wastewater but its efficiency is limited by poor O3 gas/liquid mass transfer (kLa) and low O3 utilization efficiency (typically 30 %-64 % in bubble columns). This review critically evaluates strategies to intensify O3 mass transfer and enhance pollutant degradation. The kLa and energy consumption in different commonly used ozone contactors was compared, highlighting the importance of developing enhancement methods. Based on this, four types of techniques (i.e. applying physical fields, implementing membrane technology, util…

The effect of long term exposure to low concentrations of environmental pollutants on hepatic disorders is a major public health concern worldwide. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have focused on the deleterious effects of low concentrations of PAHs in the initiation or exacerbation of the progression of chronic liver disease. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms and effective intervention methods remain unclear. Here, we found that in hepatocytes, a low concentration of benzo(a)pyren…

BACKGRAOUND: Dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants with known endocrine-disrupting and developmental toxicity. Increasing evidence suggests that prenatal exposure to DL-PCBs may adversely affect fetal growth; however, few studies have examined congener-specific and mixture-level effects, and the underlying biological mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the relationship between umbilical cord DL-PCB concentrations and key fetal growth indicators including birth weight (BW), birth length (BL), and head circumference (HC), and to explo…

Owing to their persistence, ease of accumulation in organisms, and high toxicity, the use of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) has been limited ever since the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants was signed in 2001 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). As typical POPs, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can persist in the environment for long periods. They can enter human bodies through many pathways and pose a high exposure risk to humans. OCPs and PCBs can lead to endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, reprodu…

Human hair is increasingly employed as a non-invasive biomonitoring matrix for exposure to organic contaminants (OCs). Decontamination procedures are generally needed to remove external contamination from hair prior to analysis of OCs. Despite various existing decontamination protocols, their impacts on internally incorporated (endogenous) OCs in hair remain poorly understood. This study aims to quantitatively assess the impact of decontamination procedures on endogenous OCs in hair, and investigate optimal decontamination processes and factors influencing the removal of endogenous OCs. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent organic pollutants that have attracted growing concern owing to their widespread presence in drinking water and limited removal by conventional remediation technologies. This challenge has driven increasing interest in porous materials capable of selectively removing PFAS under environmentally relevant conditions. Among these, zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great potential for water-related applications due to their chemical and hydrolytic stability. In this work, we report the design, synthesis, and characte…

Occupational exposure as a firefighter has recently been classified as a carcinogen to humans by International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Biomonitoring has been increasingly used to characterize exposure of firefighting forces to contaminants. However, available data are dispersed and information on the most relevant and promising biomarkers in this context of firefighting is missing. This review presents a comprehensive summary and critical appraisal of existing biomarkers of exposure including volatile organic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, several other persi
