The structure of social exchange in self-help support groups: development of a measure.

Self-help support groups are indigenous community resources designed to help people manage a variety of personal challenges, from alcohol abuse to xeroderma pigmentosum. The social exchanges that occur during group meetings are central to understanding how people benefit from participation. This paper examines the different types of social exchange behaviors that occur during meetings, using two studies to develop empirically distinct scales that reliably measure theoretically important types of exchange. Resource theory informed the initial measurement development efforts. Exploratory factor

Workplace learning from a socio-cultural perspective: creating developmental space during the general practice clerkship.

Workplace learning in undergraduate medical education has predominantly been studied from a cognitive perspective, despite its complex contextual characteristics, which influence medical students' learning experiences in such a way that explanation in terms of knowledge, skills, attitudes and single determinants of instructiveness is unlikely to suffice. There is also a paucity of research which, from a perspective other than the cognitive or descriptive one, investigates student learning in general practice settings, which are often characterised as powerful learning environments. In this stu

The relationship between alexithymia, meaning in life, and quality of life in older breast cancer patients: a cross-sectional study based on variable-centered and person-centered perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia, characterized by difficulties in identifying and expressing emotions, has been linked to diminished quality of life in older breast cancer patients, a vulnerable population facing multifaceted psychosocial challenges. While prior research has explored these associations, investigations have predominantly adopted a variable-centered approach, overlooking the potential statistical mediating role of meaning in life. Moreover, no studies have examined the heterogeneity of alexithymia and meaning in life through a person-centered lens, which may reveal distinct subgroups wi

A recommendation model based on profile enhancement for personalized medical expert in online health communities.

INTRODUCTION: Inefficient matching between medical experts and health advice seekers remains a challenge in online health communities. This study constructs the Recommendation Model with Profile Enhancement (RMPE), which integrates service quality and user sentiment dimensions to enhance service exchange efficiency, promote value co-creation, and provide algorithmic support and managerial insights for the ecological governance of online health communities. METHODS: The RMPE workflow consists of three stages: extracting dynamic expert profiles via topic modeling, quantifying users' subjective

A wearable PEDTM/rGO/AuNPs non-enzymatic sensor integrated with nanofiber microfluidic chip for sweat collection and continuous glucose monitoring.

Wearable sweat sensors offer a promising technical approach for real-time personal health management due to their non-invasive, in situ, and continuous monitoring capabilities. This study presents a novel wearable non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor based on a PEDTM/rGO/AuNPs composite for continuous and non-invasive monitoring of sweat glucose. Leveraging the synergistic effects of hydroxymethyl-functionalized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDTM), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), the sensor significantly improves the electrocatalytic oxidation efficiency of g

When the platform becomes a co-author: Self-writing about HPV vaccination on social media as technologies of the self.

Since the HPV vaccine's introduction in China, growing numbers of women have proactively vaccinated and shared their experiences and bodily sensations on social media, engaging in health-centered self-writing. Based on Foucault's theory of 'technologies of the self', this study views such practices as a digital-age form of reflection and subject formation. Through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with 26 participants, the study found that the technologies of the self have shifted from traditional private reflection to a platform-led co-creation, with digital media participatin

Social contact during the COVID-19 pandemic: The role of long-term connectedness and cumulative inequality in later life.

Though the COVID-19 crisis put many older adults at sudden risk of social isolation, the pandemic was far from the "great equalizer" some pundits and politicians initially claimed it would be. Drawing from Cumulative Inequality Theory, I consider how long-run patterns of social dis/connectedness contextualize key disparities in social contact that manifested during the pandemic. I incorporate data from four rounds of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (2005-2021), constructing multiple operationalizations of connectedness accumulation across pre-COVID years and examining sever

Key implementation factors in telemedicine-delivered medications for opioid use disorder: a scoping review informed by normalisation process theory.

Telemedicine could improve access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Telemedicine-delivered MOUD (TMOUD) has expanded substantially in response to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic on in-person clinical contact, yet this expansion has not happened consistently across all health systems and countries. This Review aims to understand key factors in TMOUD implementation that might explain variations in uptake. We did a scoping review using three English language databases for articles reporting on the implementation of TMOUD services. 57 peer-reviewed articles were iden

A French adaptation of the Affective and Cognitive Measure of Empathy (ACME-F).

Vachon and Lynam (2016) recently introduced a new measure of empathy, the Affective and Cognitive Measure of Empathy (ACME). Besides assessing the traditional dimensions of cognitive and affective empathy, the ACME includes an affective dissonance scale that covers "antiempathy," an important feature of the construct with prominent predictive value not included in other empathy measures. The aim of this study is to provide data on the French version of the ACME. A sample of 851 community-dwelling participants (59.4% female) completed online the ACME questionnaire along with other measures of e

The Experience of Alzheimer's Disease Family Caregivers in a Latino Community: Expectations and Incongruences in Support Services.

OBJECTIVES: Current theoretical constructs on the utilization of formal support for Latino caregivers focus on familism and exclude the cultural values represented in the service system. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the experience of care for Latino family caregivers to persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). We also examine the cultural congruence between provider perspectives with the expectations of Latino ADRD caregivers. METHOD: We conducted extended interviews with 24 Latino ADRD caregivers and 10 service providers. Interview transcripts were coded an

Recent insight in the pathophysiology of coeliac disease: relevance to rheumatoid arthritis.

Recent research has begun to explore the specific social challenges experienced by persons with Tourette syndrome (TS); however, it does not specifically address the challenges that often arise interpersonally as part of people's communicative interactions and these interactions socially construct the individual and collective well-being of all involved. This study conducted semi-structured interviews with 18 adults who identified as having TS in order to investigate the ways in which others respond behaviorally to TS behaviors and the ways TS behaviors are misinterpreted within interpersonal

Transition to community by adolescents with Asperger syndrome: staying afloat in a sea change.

BACKGROUND: Transition to community (TC) is the movement out of secondary school to independent living or higher education. It is challenging for young people who have typical neurodevelopment and daunting for those who have neurodevelopmental characteristics associated with Asperger syndrome (AS). OBJECTIVE: This grounded theory study describes the phenomenon of transition to community among adolescents and young adults with AS. METHODS: Audiotaped interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using constant comparison to explore the socially constructed phenomenon of TC. Our sample com

Clinical and laboratory assessment of the subjective experience of drug craving.

Measures of subjective drug craving - often defined as the experience of an intense or compelling urge or desire - may be used to predict relapse, evaluate psychological and pharmacological treatments, and test theories of addiction and craving. This review summarizes both direct self-report questionnaires and indirect behavioral, physiological and reaction time measures designed to assess craving for alcohol, amphetamines, cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and tobacco. Multi-item questionnaires have typically been based on one of four underlying conceptualizations of addiction or craving (obsessive

The immediate lived experience of the 2004 tsunami disaster by Swedish tourists.

AIM: This paper is a report of a study of the immediate lived experiences of victims and relatives of the 2004 tsunami disaster. BACKGROUND: Disasters serve to remind us of our frailty and vulnerability and raise existential questions. From the perspective of caring sciences, suffering is regarded as a natural source for change in patients' understanding of the world and the meaningfulness of their lives. METHOD: A phenomenological hermeneutic study was conducted, using in-depth interviews with a convenience sample of 19 informants in 2006-2007. Ricoeur's theory of interpretation served as a

Familial risk and colorectal cancer screening health beliefs and attitudes in an insured population.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between health beliefs and attitudes toward colorectal cancer screening, strength of family history risk, and being appropriately screened for colorectal cancer. METHODS: In February 2004, 7000 randomly selected members of a multi-specialty group practice located in Boston, MA were mailed a brief survey that was used to ascertain colorectal cancer family history. A follow-up survey that contained questions representing selected constructs of the Health Belief Model, Theory of Planned Behavior, and healthcare experiences was then mailed to all 355 individ

Estimates of the prevalence of speech and motor speech disorders in adolescents with Down syndrome.

Although there is substantial rationale for a motor component in the speech of persons with Down syndrome (DS), there presently are no published estimates of the prevalence of subtypes of motor speech disorders in DS. The goal of this research is to provide initial estimates of the prevalence of types of speech disorders and motor speech disorders in adolescents with DS. Conversational speech samples from a convenience sample of 45 adolescents with DS, ages 10 to 20 years old, were analysed using perceptual and acoustic methods and measures in the Speech Disorders Classification System (SDCS).

Theory of mind and emotional functioning in fibromyalgia syndrome: an investigation of the relationship between social cognition and executive function.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a syndrome primarily characterised by chronic, widespread musculoskeletal pain. In the aetiology of this syndrome a crucial role is played by complex interactions among biological, genetic, psychological, and socio-cultural factors. Recently, researchers have started to explore emotional functioning in FM, with their attention focused on alexithymia, a personality construct that affects the regulation of a person's own emotions. On the other hand, the detection and experience of emotional signals from other people have only been sparsely investigated in FM synd

Homo Memorabiliaxis: Souvenirs and the Evolution of Autobiographical Memory and Self.

Humans routinely keep souvenirs objects retained for the memories they evoke, yet the evolutionary and cognitive consequences of mnemonic collecting remain unclear. Existing discussions of curated objects concentrate on later prehistory and modern humans and view such objects at the social level, as carriers of shared cultural meaning or as markers of status. Here, we address an earlier time period and locate the phenomenon at the personal rather than the social level. By integrating archaeology with theories of extended memory and niche construction, we synthesize evidence consistent with sys

Mechanisms of Change Underlying Effects of an Early Parenting Intervention on Child Development Among Vulnerable Families in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Intervention effectiveness studies rarely empirically assess Theories of Change (ToC) to determine how an intervention worked. We examine the ToC underlying the Sugira Muryango (SM) parenting program in rural Rwanda to understand whether the intervention improved child development outcomes via changes in caregivers' behaviors to improve the home caregiving environment, as hypothesized. METHODS: SM uses coaching of parents to create a safe, affectionate, stimulating, and violence-free home environment. A cluster randomized trial enrolled 1049 families with young children. SM had im

Beyond Filipino Resilience: A Conceptual Analysis of Spiritual Survival, Religious Meaning-Making, and Post-Disaster Health.

Disaster recovery in the Philippines is narrated through resilience, yet praise for endurance may obscure grief, health needs, unequal support, and institutional responsibility. This conceptual article develops the Critical Filipino Spiritual Resilience Framework through integrative conceptual analysis, comparison with adjacent constructs, and synthesis of the Meaning-Making Model and Social-Ecological Resilience Theory. Spiritual survival is proposed as the relationally situated process through which disaster-affected persons and communities preserve, contest, or reconstruct sacred or spiritu
