Personalized pulmonary trunk modeling for intervention planning and valve assessment estimated from CT data.

Pulmonary valve disease affects a significant portion of the global population and often occurs in conjunction with other heart dysfunctions. Emerging interventional methods enable percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation, which constitute an alternative to open heart surgery. As minimal invasive procedures become common practice, imaging and non-invasive assessment techniques turn into key clinical tools. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for intervention planning as well as morphological and functional quantification of the pulmonary trunk and valve. An abstraction of the anatomic

Women's perceptions of the personal and family impact of genetic cancer risk assessment: focus group findings.

Women with a personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer are increasingly presenting for genetic cancer risk assessment (GCRA). To explore the personal and family impact of GCRA, four focus groups were conducted of women seen for risk assessment. Participants were 22 primarily non-Latina White women with a personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer. Analysis of the data identified new themes related to balancing time to assimilate risk information with the need to make timely healthcare decisions, physicians' lack of sufficient genetic knowledge, and concern for daughter

Assessment of subjective health and health-related quality of life in persons with acquired or degenerative brain injury.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Health-related quality of life is a new outcome variable in neurology. Several generic measures aim at assessing this variable in adults with neurological diseases. Disease-specific measures are still rare; however, individuals with neurological diseases frequently suffer from cognitive impairment, yet are often excluded from health-related quality of life investigations. When included in such studies, cognitive functioning is not monitored via neuropsychological evaluation, possibly leading to methodological problems. Papers from May 2004 until July 2005 are reviewed with r

An assessment of the contribution of electromyographic biofeedback as an adjunct therapy in the physical training of spinal cord injured persons.

This study tested the efficacy of biofeedback when administered in conjunction with physical rehabilitation therapy to chronic C5-7 quadriplegics. Triceps brachii, biceps brachii, wrist extensors, and wrist flexors were tested. The studied muscles were compromised by the injury to varying degrees, but were often still useful to these subjects. An exercise regimen was given to all subjects. In addition, subjects were separated into two groups: those who received biofeedback training and those who did not. Two measures of performance were tested: manual muscle scores and functional activities sc

Assessing food preferences among persons with profound mental retardation: providing opportunities to make choices.

Increased attention has been directed recently to assisting persons with severe handicaps to express preferences concerning events in their lives. We evaluated a program for assessing choice-making skills to provide opportunities for persons with profound mental retardation to express food and drink preferences. In Experiment 1, the assessment procedure involving repeated, paired-item presentations resulted in active choice making and the identification of preferences for all 5 participants. Results also indicated that caregiver opinion was not predictive of participant food and drink preferen

Comparative Assessment of Personal Exposures to Environmental Contaminants Using Silicone Wristbands and Fresh Air Wristbands.

Wearable passive samplers are practical tools for personal exposure assessment, yet how sampler design and analysis methods shape the resulting measurements remains poorly characterized. We compared two widely used samplers, silicone and Fresh Air wristbands, worn simultaneously by 30 adults in Durham County, North Carolina, USA over 5 days with paired urine collection. All samples were analyzed using gas chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry, covering a broad chemical space (m/z 53.4-1050), using five analytical approaches to separate the influence of sampler design from that of an

Toward future diagnostics of Parkinson's disease: a perspective on multimodal motor assessment and personalized digital twins.

The accurate diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) remains challenging due to the heterogeneity of motor symptoms and the reliance on subjective clinical assessments. Although biomarkers such as dopaminergic imaging, fluid assays, and genetic testing can support diagnosis, their clinical utility is limited by cost, accessibility, and low sensitivity to early motor changes. Consequently, diagnosis depends largely on clinical observation, highlighting the need for more accurate, objective, and integrable tools to detect early motor symptoms. Advances in wearable sensing and computational modelin

Beyond Chronologic Age: Frailty, Geriatric Assessment, and Personalized Care for Older Adults With Genitourinary Cancer.

Frailty captures multiple physical, mental, and social vulnerabilities that affect older adults with cancer and is associated with clinical outcomes. A major challenge in oncology is how best to avoid undertreatment or overtreatment by tailoring cancer care for older adults and optimizing frailty or associated vulnerabilities. A barrier to right-sizing cancer treatment in older adults is the fact that practice guidelines are often based on data from clinical trials that exclude older adults and frail patients. Meanwhile, the incidence of cancer diagnoses in older adults continues to increase,

Multiagent First-Person Perspective Analysis for Leadership Assessment in Pediatric Emergency Simulations: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Conventional leadership assessments provide structured ratings but offer limited observer-independent metrics. Because leadership and teamwork are interdependent, capturing team dynamics requires multiagent, time- and space-synchronized analysis. This pilot study examined the feasibility of applying multiagent, spatiotemporally synchronized first-person perspective analysis (FPA) in emergency simulations. METHODS: This exploratory simulation study was conducted in a real patient-care room within the PICU of our institution. Two physicians-a critical care specialist (L1) and a pedi

Evaluation of Intermethod Reliability Between Online and In-Person Fitness Assessments Among Physically Inactive Adults.

Background and Purpose: Online assessments are common. However, scarce research compares the accuracy of online assessments to in-person assessments. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability of an online assessment versus an in-person fitness assessment. Methods: Participants (N = 20) were recruited using flyers. They completed an online fitness assessment followed by an in-person fitness assessment 2-10 days later. Reliability was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients and Bland-Altman plots. Results: Participants were 30.8 (±20.2) years, mostly female (76.5%), a

All hands on deck: The multidisciplinary rehabilitation assessment and management of hand function in persons with neuromuscular disorders.

Hand function is important in every aspect of our lives. Across a wide range of neuromuscular disorders-inherited ataxias, motor neuron diseases, polyneuropathies, and myopathies-people can experience losses in hand strength, tone, movement, dexterity, joint range, and sensation. Such changes can adversely affect function and independence in daily activities, reducing participation and quality of life. People with neuromuscular disorders (pwNMD) known to involve the hand should be assessed at regular intervals for changes both clinically and using impairment, performance, function, and patient

A new approach to personalized assessment of functional platelet disorders in children with inherited thrombocytopenias by flow cytometry.

Inherited thrombocytopenias are variable in the count and size of platelets, which is related with the number of receptors and intracellular structure. So, the reference ranges do not allow interpretation of functional disorders, especially in macrothrombocytopenias and microthrombocytopenias. The flow cytometry diagnostic approach to use the reference values is necessary. Seventy-five pediatric patients were divided into three groups by platelet size: 25 with normothrombocytopenia ( RUNX1, ANKRD26, ETV6 , and CYCS ), 25 with microthrombocytopenia ( WAS ), 25 with macrothrombocytopenia ( MYH9,

Towards personalized trocar placement: assessment of patient-specific abdominal wall distension due to pneumoperitoneum.

To quantify how pneumoperitoneum affects abdominal shape and how this is influenced by patient characteristics. Data from 73 patients undergoing minimally invasive (robot-assisted or laparoscopic) surgery were collected, including RGB-Depth (RGB-D) videos and patient characteristics (weight, height, sex, and age). Abdominal landmarks were ink-marked, and video analysis quantified global and regional wall distension. Global wall distension is defined as the mean displacement of all landmarks, and regional deformations are the mean displacements in specific regions, divided into medio-lateral an

Machine Learning-based World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule for persons with Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) is a well-known measure to assess disability in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD). The purpose of this study was to develop a short form of the WHODAS 2.0 for persons with PD using a machine learning-based methodology (ML-WHODAS) and to examine the efficiency (i.e., number of items needed to be administered) and validity of the ML-WHODAS. METHODS: A secondary data analysis was performed. Data were randomly assigned to training datasets (80 %) and validation datasets (20 %). For developing the ML-WH

Assessing Suicide Risk in Children Affected by HIV/AIDS With the House-Tree-Person Drawing Test.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a serious public health concern, particularly among Chinese children affected by HIV/AIDS. However, these risks are often subtle and obscured by social desirability bias and cultural stigma. This study aims to evaluate the predictive validity of the House-Tree-Person (HTP) drawing test in assessing suicide risk among children affected by HIV/AIDS. METHODS: Conducted in western China, this study included 650 children in discovery set and 243 children affected by HIV/AIDS in validation set. Participants completed demographic questionnaires, a suicide risk scale, and the H

Development of personalized interpretable multilevel prediction models for the risk assessment of hypoglycemia in Type 1 Diabetes.

Prognostic tools for the timely identification of hypoglycemia can play a pivotal role in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) management by facilitating preventive interventions that improve health outcomes and enhance quality of life. The adoption of prediction models for hypoglycemia risk assessment hinges on their reliability, which is founded on predictive accuracy and the models' ability to yield interpretable outputs. By leveraging continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and insulin data along with meal information from the medical records of 12 T1DM patients, the present paper aims at the devel
