Two hundreds and eighteen patients with borderline mental disorders have been examined. After the first session of hypnosis suggesting therapy, 5 clinical variants of hypnotic states (physiological, asthenic, phobic, hysterical and mixed) were distinguished. Additionally, 40 patients have been interviewed for obtaining a formalized, according to adjectives used by the patients, description of experiences during the hypnotic session. Using cluster analysis, 5 groups were formed characteristics of which strongly correlated with earlier clinical description and therapeutical efficacy. The results

A double-blind, placebo-controlled comparison at three collaborating university sites included 242 patients diagnosed as having anxiety disorders. A two-week placebo washout period preceded random assignment to eight weeks of imipramine hydrochloride, chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride, or placebo treatment. Antianxiety effects of imipramine were superior to those of the other two agents by the second treatment week; these effects became more clearly significant thereafter and were independent of degree of both baseline depression and anxiety. Excluding patients with possible panic-phobic syndrome

This paper examined the hypothesis that PTSD-unique symptom clusters of re-experiencing, active avoidance and hyperarousal were more related to the fear/phobic disorders, while shared PTSD symptoms of dysphoria were more closely related to Anxious-Misery disorders (MDD/GAD). Confirmatory factor and correlation analyses examining PTSD, anxiety and mood disorder data from 714 injury survivors interviewed 3, 12 and 24-months following their injury supported this hypothesis with these relationships remaining robust from 3-24 months posttrauma. Of the nine unique fear-oriented PTSD symptoms, only o…

Psychoemotional status was studied in 125 female workers 21 to 50 years old having been exposed to epoxide resins and their compounds for 5 to 25 years. We undertook to carry out multifactor questionnaire survey together with pathopsychological testing, and determining levels of personal constitutional and reactive anxiety. Occupation-related neurotic disorders (neurasthenic-, obsessive and phobic-, and, to a lesser extent, hysterical type manifestations) were found out to develop during the stage of prenosologic forms against the background of high level of both constitutional and reactive an

It is believed in Japan that only psychiatrists are capable of providing reliable psychiatric diagnosis. However, more awareness of mental health issues related to perinatal care means that midwives are now required to have psychiatric diagnostic skills. The purpose of the present paper was to examine how well Japanese midwives agreed with a psychiatrist on diagnoses of different psychiatric disorders. Vignettes of 29 cases including DSM-IV mood disorders (major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder) and anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobic disorders, and …

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of child psychiatric disorders has been studied in many countries. In Thailand, this was done ten years ago by using parent and teacher reported questionaires without interviewing the parent or the child.
METHOD: A two-stage survey design was used in a community sample of 1698 grade 4 school-children randomly selected from 107 schools in Bangkok. Measures employed were Thai Youth Checklist (TYC)-Parent and Teacher form for screening. Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Assessment (CAPA) was used in the second phase for 127 parent and child interview.
RESULTS: The over

Psychiatric morbidity following trauma of combat origin was studied in 60 Israeli veterans who applied for treatment 4-6 years after the war in Lebanon. Diagnostic tools were structured interviews for psychiatric disorders. In all subjects multiple psychiatric disorders had been diagnosed, most of which developed following the traumatic experience. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was the most prevalent condition (100%-ever; 87%-present). Comorbidity included major depression with a very high prevalence (95%-ever; 50%-present) and anxiety disorders: phobic disorder, obsessive-compulsive d

Exposure therapy is an efficacious treatment for anxiety-related disorders. Yet, fear often returns after treatment. Occasional reinforcement, in which the feared stimulus is intermittently presented during extinction, increases safety learning and slows fear renewal in conditioning paradigms and analogue samples, but no studies to date have examined this strategy in clinical samples. The present study examined the effects of vicarious occasional reinforcement on fear renewal in a snake-phobic sample across multiple levels of analysis. Fear was intermittently reinforced by providing reminders

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the frequency of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in dental students, and evaluates the association between TMDs, psychological states, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The presence of bruxism was also determined.
METHODS: Two hundred ninety-three dental students completed the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised (SCL-90-R) and Oral Health Impact Profile 14 (OHIP-14) questionnaires and underwent a clinical examination according to Diagnostic Criteria for TMDs.
RESULTS: TMDs were detected in 46.4% of the dental students. OHIP-14 scores of

BACKGROUND: A key clinical issue is how to maximise the belief change central to cognitive therapy. Physiological arousal is a key internal cue confirming threat beliefs in anxiety disorders. Deeper extinction of anxiety may occur if catastrophizing responses to physiological arousal are inhibited prior to joint exposure with external phobic stimuli. The aim of the study was to test whether increasing physiological arousal using exercise increases the benefits of behavioural tests.
METHODS: Sixty individuals with a fear of heights had one session of VR cognitive treatment. They were randomise

OBJECTIVES: Evidence for a genetic influence on psychological treatment outcome so far has been inconsistent, likely due to the focus on candidate genes and the heterogeneity of the disorders treated. Using polygenic risk scores (PRS) in homogenous patient samples may increase the chance of detecting genetic influences.
METHODS: A sample of 342 phobic patients treated either for clinically relevant dental fear (n = 189) or other (mixed) phobic fears (n = 153) underwent highly standardised exposure-based CBT. A brief five-session format was used to treat dental fear, whereas longer multi-sessi

BACKGROUND: Although studies of co-occurring psychiatric disorders among methamphetamine (MA)-dependent persons have been conducted in treatment programs, none have examined them in service settings used to sustain long-term recovery, such as sober living houses (SLHs).
METHODS: Residents entering SLHs (N = 243) were interviewed within two weeks and at 6-, 12-, and 18-month follow-up. Measures assessed psychiatric symptoms using the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), past-year drug and alcohol dependence, and abstinence over six-month time periods.
RESULTS: Overall, severity of psychiatric sympt

A growing body of literature suggests that virtual reality is a successful tool for exposure therapy in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Virtual reality (VR) researchers posit the construct of presence, defined as the interpretation of an artificial stimulus as if it were real, to be a presumed factor that enables anxiety to be felt during virtual reality exposure therapy (VRE). However, a handful of empirical studies on the relation between presence and anxiety in VRE have yielded mixed findings. The current study tested the following hypotheses about the relation between presence and anxi

Social phobia is one of the most frequent psychiatric disorders, with a lifetime prevalence rate of about 3-5%. The diagnosis is relatively easy in the classical forms, with a meticulous interview when the context and the patient's complaints are in favour of this condition, but there are various cases in which the symptoms are not typical or in which other diagnoses are in the forefront. In this way, depressive and addictive disorders are frequent complications of social phobia but they often hide the primary diagnosis because of their severity. The initial and even the main complaint can als

BACKGROUND: Current diagnostic classifications emphasize the categorical nature of disorders such as social anxiety disorder. Nevertheless, phenomenological and psychobiological data have led to the hypothesis that social anxiety symptoms and disorders lie on various dimensions.
METHOD: A MEDLINE search (1966-2003) for relevant articles on the social anxiety disorder spectrum was undertaken using the terms shyness, behavioral inhibition, social phobia, social anxiety disorder, avoidant personality, dimension, and spectrum to aim at objective coverage, but references for this article were chos

Social phobia is increasingly recognized as a prevalent and socially impairing mental disorder. However, little data is available regarding the general and disease-specific impairments and disabilities associated with social phobia. Furthermore, most studies have not controlled for the confounding effects of comorbid conditions. This study investigates: (a) the generic quality of life; (b) work productivity; and, (c) various other disorder-specific social impairments in current cases with pure (n = 65), comorbid (n = 51) and subthreshold (n = 34) DSM-IV social phobia as compared to controls wi
