An electrophysiologic indication of defective information storage in childhood autism.

We used a combined behavioral and electrophysiological technique to test the hypothesis that storage of information is impaired in childhood autism. Endogenous event-related potentials associated with the random deletion of stimuli within a regular train of auditory or visual stimuli were examined in three autistic and three normal children. We found that all subjects were able to detect the stimulus deletions, but cortical potentials associated with stimulus omissions were smaller or absent in the autistic subjects. These results are consistent with dysfunction within the system that includes

The Photoparoxysmal Response Reflects Abnormal Early Visuomotor Integration in the Human Motor Cortex.

BACKGROUND: Visual-paired associative stimulation (V-PAS) is a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) technique able to investigate long-term potentiation (LTP) and depression (LTD)-like plasticity in the primary motor cortex (M1) arising through early visuomotor integration. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Abnormal early visuomotor integration might contribute to the pathophysiology of intermittent photic stimulation (IPS)-induced photoparoxysmal response (PPR). METHODS: We applied V-PAS in 25 healthy subjects (HS), 25 PPR-positive patients, with and without idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE), an…

Sex differences in response to red and blue light in human primary visual cortex: a bold fMRI study.

Studies using a variety of investigative methods, including functional brain imaging and electroencephalography (EEG), have suggested that c … dings support a sex and color-dependent differential pattern of primary visual cortical response to photic stimulation and suggest a method for assessing the influence of specific dopamine agonist/antagonist medications on visual function.

Rhythmic movements mimicking tremor under different metronome conditions.

Rhythmic movements mimicking tremor are commonly used as a control condition in tremor physiology studies, yet the influence of different metronome modalities on performance has not been systematically examined. We compared auditory, visual, and combined auditory-visual metronome guidance in terms of frequency accuracy, temporal stability, and persistence following cueing removal to identify a suitable metronome condition for tremor simulation. Nineteen healthy volunteers performed 2 Hz thumb abduction-adduction movements under auditory, visual, and combined auditory-visual metronome condition

Metacognition in the audiovisual McGurk illusion: perceptual and causal confidence.

Almost all decisions in everyday life rely on multiple sensory inputs that can come from common or independent causes. These situations invoke perceptual uncertainty about environmental properties and the signals' causal structure. Using the audiovisual McGurk illusion, this study investigated how observers formed perceptual and causal confidence judgements in information integration tasks under causal uncertainty. Observers were presented with spoken syllables, their corresponding articulatory lip movements or their congruent and McGurk combinations (e.g. auditory B/P with visual G/K). Observ

The effects of estradiol levels on crossmodal perception: a study on the sound induced flash illusion in healthy and menstrually related migraine individuals.

OBJECTIVE: The sound-induced flash illusion (SIFI) is a valid paradigm to study multisensorial perception. In the "fission" SIFI, multiple flashes are perceived when observing a single flash paired with two or more beeps. SIFI is largely dependent on visual and acoustic cortex excitability; in migraine, dysfunctional cortical excitability affects SIFI perception. Since estrogen peak occurring during ovulation can increase neuronal excitability, the present study aims to verify whether cortical excitability shifts linked to the menstrual cycle could influence SIFI. METHODS: In a comparative pr

Localisation and stimulation of the parietal eye field.

Localisation of the human parietal eye fields (PEF) has not been as well studied as the human frontal eye fields (FEF). Stimulation studies in rhesus monkeys have suggested the localisation of the PEF to be within the intraparietal sulcus. Functional MRI studies have demonstrated this region to be highly active and potentially connected in saccadic and gaze shifting tasks. Here, we present a case of a patient with left versive seizures evaluated with SEEG, in whom electrical stimulation within the right intraparietal sulcus resulted in horizontal and downward conjugate eye movements contralate

Neural oscillations promoting perceptual stability and perceptual memory during bistable perception.

Ambiguous images elicit bistable perception, wherein periods of momentary perceptual stability are interrupted by sudden perceptual switches. When intermittently presented, ambiguous images trigger a perceptual memory trace in the intervening blank periods. Understanding the neural bases of perceptual stability and perceptual memory during bistable perception may hold clues for explaining the apparent stability of visual experience in the natural world, where ambiguous and fleeting images are prevalent. Motivated by recent work showing the involvement of the right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG)

Differential attention-dependent adjustment of frequency, power and phase in primary sensory and frontoparietal areas.

Continuously prioritizing behaviourally relevant information from the environment for improved stimulus processing is a crucial function of attention. In the current MEG study, we investigated how ongoing oscillatory activity of both sensory and non-sensory brain regions are differentially impacted by attentional focus. Low-frequency phase alignment of neural activity in primary sensory areas, with respect to attended/ignored features has been suggested to support top-down prioritization. However, phase adjustment in frontoparietal regions has not been widely studied, despite general implicati

Neurofeedback Modulation of the Sound-induced Flash Illusion Using Parietal Cortex Alpha Oscillations Reveals Dependency on Prior Multisensory Congruency.

Spontaneous neural oscillations are key predictors of perceptual decisions to bind multisensory signals into a unified percept. Research links decreased alpha power in the posterior cortices to attention and audiovisual binding in the sound-induced flash illusion (SIFI) paradigm. This suggests that controlling alpha oscillations would be a way of controlling audiovisual binding. In the present feasibility study we used MEG-neurofeedback to train one group of subjects to increase left/right and another to increase right/left alpha power ratios in the parietal cortex. We tested for changes in au

When transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) modulates feature integration.

How the brain integrates visual information across time into coherent percepts is an open question. Here, we presented two verniers with opposite offset directions one after the other. A vernier consists of two vertical bars that are horizontally offset. When the two verniers are separated by a blank screen (interstimulus interval, ISI), the two verniers are perceived either as two separate entities or as one vernier with the offset moving from one side to the other depending on the ISI. In both cases, their offsets can be reported independently. Transcranial magnet stimulation (TMS) over the

Convergence of visual and tactile shape processing in the human lateral occipital complex.

We have recently demonstrated using fMRI that a region within the human lateral occipital complex (LOC) is activated by objects when either seen or touched. We term this cortical region LOtv for the lateral occipital tactile-visual region. We report here that LOtv voxels tend to be located in sub-regions of LOC that show preference for graspable visual objects over faces or houses. We further examine the nature of object representation in LOtv by studying its response to stimuli in three modalities: auditory, somatosensory and visual. If objects activate LOtv, irrespective of the modality used

[Comparative study of the psychophysiologic relaxation effects of an optic-acoustic mind machine with relaxation music].

The present study was designed to test the effectiveness of an optical-acoustic mind machine (brain machine) in inducing relaxation. The mind machine used in this study stimulates the user with flickers of light and pulsating sounds. During the treatment the stimulation decreases from 10 to 2 hertz and increases again at half time. No other relaxation inducing effects were used. Sixteen subjects received two or three sessions of instruction with the mind machine. Afterwards the parameters listed below were continuously recorded during one session with the mind machine and one session with the

Scopolamine and the sensory conditioning of hallucinations.

By means of a sensory conditioning procedure, auditory 'hallucinations' were produced in a set of subjects by pairing a light and a tone. The effect of two doses of scopolamine on the occurrence of these hallucinations was investigated, and the results showed that they were more likely to occur after scopolamine than when subjects had received a placebo. This change was attributed to the impairment of information processing induced by scopolamine.

Neuromodulation in the Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease: Current and Emerging Approaches.

Neuromodulation as a treatment strategy for psychiatric and neurological diseases has grown in popularity in recent years, with the approval of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for the treatment of depression being one such example. These approaches offer new hope in the treatment of diseases that have proven largely intractable to traditional pharmacological approaches. For this reason, neuromodulation is increasingly being explored for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. However, such approaches have variable, and, in many cases, very limited evidence for safety and effi

Anisotropic speed discrimination sensitivity for expanding and contracting optic flow.

Retinal optic flow provides critical visual cues for locomotion and self-navigation. Forward self-motion, such as walking or driving, typically induces an expanding radial flow pattern on the retina. Despite the predominance of expanding optic flow in everyday self-motion, several studies have reported higher sensitivity for contracting flow that arises under relatively rare conditions, such as walking backward or falling onto one's back. The underlying basis of this anisotropy remains elusive. In this study, we compared discrimination sensitivity to speed for expanding versus contracting opti

A meta-analysis of the late positive potential for assessing affective processing in depression and depression vulnerability.

Depression and conditions conferring vulnerability to depression are thought to involve disruptions in emotional processing, yet the specific patterns and underlying neural mechanisms of these alterations remain unclear. To investigate emotional processing, studies often rely on tasks involving the viewing of standardized emotional visual stimuli, which elicit a range of psychophysiological responses. In this context, the late positive potential (LPP), an event-related potential reflecting motivated attention and emotional engagement, has emerged as a promising biomarker of emotional processin

Advantages and artifacts of high-speed OLED monitors for vision, eye-tracking, and EEG research.

The recent introduction of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) monitors with refresh rates of 240 Hz or more opens new possibilities for their use as precise stimulation devices in vision research, experimental psychology, and electrophysiology. These affordable high-speed monitors, targeted at video gamers, promise several advantages over cathode ray tube (CRT) and liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors. Unlike LCDs, OLEDs have self-emitting pixels that can show true black, resulting in superior contrast, a broad color spectrum, and wide viewing angles. More importantly, the latest OLEDs offer

The computational dynamics of shape orientation perception.

How does the brain transform retinal information into representations of oriented objects? The most comprehensive computational explanation to date - the coordinate-system hypothesis of orientation representation - proposes that this transformation relies on the computation of four parameters that jointly define the relationship between a shape and its environment: axis correspondence, polarity correspondence, tilt direction, and tilt magnitude. The goal of this research was to investigate whether these parameters are computed in parallel or serially and, if so, in which order. To do so, we co

What type of relationship is learned during visual statistical learning?

Statistical learning enables observers to extract regularities from their environment, but what statistical regularity is extracted remains debated. While previous research has mainly focused on conditional probability, recent evidence suggests that observers may instead learn the uniqueness of predictive relationships. In two visual statistical learning experiments, we manipulated the strength and uniqueness of associations between two object stimuli. We contrasted the predictions of three metrics of associative strength, which incorporate the strength and uniqueness of the association differ
