Simple non-mydriatic retinal photography is feasible and demonstrates retinal microvascular dilation in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

BACKGROUND: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction and stroke but it remains unclear how to identify microvascular changes in this population. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that simple non-mydriatic retinal photography is feasible and can be used to assess microvascular damage in COPD. METHODS: Novel Vascular Manifestations of COPD was a prospective study comparing smokers with and without COPD, matched for age. Non-mydriatic, retinal fundus photographs were assessed using semi-automated software. RESULTS: Retinal images from…

Screening for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) using wide-angle digital retinal photography by non-ophthalmologists: a systematic review.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is one of the leading and preventable causes of blindness. The investigation of choice for diagnosing ROP is binocular indirect ophthalmoscope (BIO) done by ophthalmologists. Since the number of ophthalmologists available to do BIO examination is limited, especially in developing countries, there is a need for an alternate, cheap, reliable and feasible test. Telemedicine imaging with Digital Retinal Photography (DRP) is one such alternate diagnostic test which can be performed easily by non-ophthalmologists, with adequate training. Our objective was to conduct …

Optic disc edema in raised intracranial pressure. II. Early detection with fluorescein fundus angiography and stereoscopic color photography.

Optic disc edema (ODE) due to chronic intracranial hypertension was produced experimentally in rhesus monkeys. Serial studies of fundus changes at frequent intervals, by routine ophthalmoscopy, steroscopic color photography, and fluorescein angiography, revealed that swelling of the optic disc was the first sign of ODE. Other early signs were striation of nerve fibers on the optic disc margins and peripapillary retina, blurring of the disc margins, hyperemia of the disc and capillary dilation, hemorrhages, and other retinal vascular changes; these usually appeared in that sequence. The classic…

Quantitative color fundus photography parameters as potential biomarkers of axial length progression: evidence from a machine learning cohort study.

PURPOSE: Early identification of children at risk for accelerated axial elongation is essential for implementing timely myopia control strategies. Quantitative parameters derived from color fundus photography (CFP) may capture subtle structural and microvascular features relevant to axial length (AL) progression, yet their predictive value remains insufficiently characterized. To develop and validate a machine learning-based model integrating CFP-derived quantitative biomarkers and clinical characteristics to predict 1-year AL progression in school-aged children. METHODS: This cohort study in…

Late fusion of deep and shallow features to improve discrimination of actinic keratosis from normal skin using clinical photography.

BACKGROUND: Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common premalignant skin lesion that can potentially progress to squamous cell carcinoma. Appropriate long-term management of AK requires close patient monitoring in addition to therapeutic interventions. Computer-aided diagnostic systems based on clinical photography might evolve in the future into valuable adjuncts to AK patient management. The present study proposes a late fusion approach of color-texture features (shallow features) and deep features extracted from pre-trained convolutional neural networks (CNN) to boost AK detection accuracy on clini…

State-of-the-Art in Skin Fluorescent Photography for Cosmetic and Skincare Research: From Molecular Spectra to AI Image Analysis.

Autofluorescence is a remarkable property of human skin. It can be excited by UV and observed in the dark using special detection systems. The method of fluorescence photography (FP) is an effective non-invasive tool for skin assessment. It involves image capturing by a camera the emission of light quanta from fluorophore molecules in the skin. It serves as a useful tool for cosmetic and skincare research, especially for the detection of pathological skin states, like acne, psoriasis, etc. To the best of our knowledge, there is currently no comprehensive review that fully describes the applica…
