Riders' prediction of results at Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) endurance rides and sources of bias in questionnaires completed by riders.

Information acquired from endurance riders and its relationship with the results of the ride has not been investigated. The aims of this study were to assess associations between data provided by riders and data obtained from the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) website at FEI endurance rides and to identify whether data provided by riders in pre- and post-ride questionnaires was subject to response and/or information bias. Variables were collected from the FEI website and from self-completed pre-ride and post-ride questionnaires at 20 FEI endurance rides in 2011 and 2012. Kappa statis

Potential clinical translation of juvenile rodent inactivity models to study the onset of childhood obesity.

According to the latest data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention 17%, or 12.5 million, of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years in the United States are obese. Physical inactivity is designated as one of the actual causes of US deaths and undoubtedly contributes to the obesity epidemic in children and adults. Examining the effects of inactivity on physiological homeostasis during youth is crucial given that 58% of children between the ages 6-11 yr old fail to obtain the recommended 60 min/day of physical activity and 92% of adolescents fail to achieve this goal [Troiano et al

Exercise-induced muscle-derived cytokines inhibit mammary cancer cell growth.

Regular physical activity protects against the development of breast and colon cancer, since it reduces the risk of developing these by 25-30%. During exercise, humoral factors are released from the working muscles for endocrinal signaling to other organs. We hypothesized that these myokines mediate some of the inhibitory effects of exercise on mammary cancer cell proliferation. Serum and muscles were collected from mice after an exercise bout. Incubation with exercise-conditioned serum inhibited MCF-7 cell proliferation by 52% and increased caspase activity by 54%. A similar increase in caspa

Case study: aphthous ulcers in a 14-year-old girl.

Recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAUs), also known as canker sores, aphthous stomatitis, or aphthae, are a very common and often painful condition presenting in primary care. The majority of aphthous ulcers are benign, time-limited (7 to 14 days), and in some cases, require pain management until healed. However, RAUs can be a manifestation of a serious health condition, such as an autoimmune disorder, human immunodeficiency virus, infection, and hematologic or oncologic conditions. Initially, the most important priority in caring for these patients is to obtain a complete history and physical examin

Physiological parameters and training characteristics of endurance runners at Ethiopian Youth Sports Academy (2400 meters above sea level) and Guna Athletics Sport Club (3100 meters above sea level) training camps: a comparative cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Endurance performance is impacted by physiological, anthropometrical, diet, genetic, psychological, and training characteristics. Altitude can affect physiological parameters (like maximum oxygen utilization, arterial oxygen saturation (SaO<inf>2</inf>), heart rate, and blood pressure) and training characteristics (duration, frequency, and training load). Thus, this study compared physiological parameters and training characteristics between endurance runners at Ethiopian Youth Sports Academy (EYSA) and Guna Athletics Sport Club (GASC) located which are located at elevation of 2400

Role of intensive training in the growth and maturation of artistic gymnasts.

Short stature and later maturation of youth artistic gymnasts are often attributed to the effects of intensive training from a young age. Given limitations of available data, inadequate specification of training, failure to consider other factors affecting growth and maturation, and failure to address epidemiological criteria for causality, it has not been possible thus far to establish cause-effect relationships between training and the growth and maturation of young artistic gymnasts. In response to this ongoing debate, the Scientific Commission of the International Gymnastics Federation (FI

Bacterial community analysis of recreational beach waters reveals human fecal contamination and pathogenicity across varying field conditions.

Assessing human fecal contamination of recreational beach waters is a public health challenge owing to multiple sources and environmental conditions affecting indicator, pathogen, and source marker relationships. Human fecal-associated markers, such as HF183, accurately indicate human waste, but reliance on individual markers risks false negative diagnoses, owing to marker source loading variations and attenuation. Bacterial community analysis is a data-dense approach that could improve the accuracy of human waste detection, but relatedness to actual human health hazards under complex coastal

Prevalence of movement asymmetries in high-performing riding horses perceived as free from lameness and riders' perception of horse sidedness.

A high proportion of horses in training, perceived as free from lameness by their owner, exhibit vertical movement asymmetries. These types of asymmetries are sensitive measures of lameness, but their specificity as indicators of orthopaedic pathology or locomotor function remains unclear. Equine athletes performing at a high level could be assumed to exhibit a higher degree of movement symmetry compared with the general horse population, but this has not been confirmed. This study investigated the prevalence of movement asymmetries in horses performing at a high level in three equestrian disc

Pre-stroke exercise does not reduce atrophy in healthy young adult mice.

Stroke is the main cause of acquired disability in adults. Exercise reduces the risk for stroke and protects against functional loss after stroke. An exercise-induced reduction in key risk factors probably contributes to the protective effect, but direct effects on the brain may also contribute to stroke protection. We previously reported that exercise increases angiogenesis and neurogenesis through activation of the lactate receptor HCA1. Here we exposed young adult wild-type mice and HCA1 knockout mice to interval exercise at high or medium intensity, or to intraperitoneal injections of L-la

The Key Role of Initiation Timing on Stroke Rehabilitation by Remote Ischemic Conditioning with Exercise (RICE).

OBJECTIVE: Physical therapy is an integral part of post-stroke rehabilitation. Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) induces neuroprotection within 24 hours after stroke, during which exercise is unsafe and ineffective. We combined RIC with exercise to establish a novel rehabilitation strategy, RICE (RIC+Exercise). The aim of this study was to optimize the RICE protocol in neurorehabilitation. METHODS: Thirty-two adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were placed in one of four groups: stroke with no rehabilitation or stroke with various RICE protocols. To further understand the mechanisms underlying ne

Irisin vs. Treadmill Exercise in Post Myocardial Infarction Cardiac Rehabilitation in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Irisin is an exercise-induced myokine that could play a role in post-myocardial infarction (MI) cardiac rehabilitation. AIM OF THE STUDY: We investigated the ability of dihydromyricetin to mimic the effects of exercise on raising serum irisin and on enhancing cardiac function and remodeling following MI in rats. METHODS: MI was induced in albino rats by subcutaneous injection of isoproterenol (85 mg/kg) for 2 consecutive days at an interval of 24 h. One week post-MI, rats either underwent physical exercise by running on a motor-driven treadmill at 25 m/min, 30 min/d, 5 d/week or

[DENTIST AND EARLY DETECTION OF ORAL CARCINOMA].

Oral cancer is one of the ten cancers with the worst prognosis. Higher mortality rate is due to the fact that the majority of cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Early stage of the disease causes no discomfort and symptoms start to present in later stages. Oral cancer can be detected in its earliest stage by simple examination of oral mucosa. Oral mucosa can be easily examined during routine dental examination. The examination itself is noninvasive, takes no more than one minute, does not require any special equipment, and poses no discomfort to the patient. Apart from better knowledge a

Pubertal transitions in health.

Puberty is accompanied by physical, psychological, and emotional changes adapted to ensure reproductive and parenting success. Human puberty stands out in the animal world for its association with brain maturation and physical growth. Its effects on health and wellbeing are profound and paradoxical. On the one hand, physical maturation propels an individual into adolescence with peaks in strength, speed, and fitness. Clinicians have viewed puberty as a point of maturing out of childhood-onset conditions. However, puberty's relevance for health has shifted with a modern rise in psychosocial dis

A Mechanically Resilient Soft Hydrogel Improves Drug Delivery for Treating Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis in Physically Active Joints.

Intra-articular delivery of disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs (DMOADs) is likely to be most effective in early post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) when symptoms are minimal and patients are physically active. DMOAD delivery systems therefore must withstand repeated mechanical loading without affecting the drug release kinetics. Although soft materials are preferred for DMOAD delivery, mechanical loading can compromise their structural integrity and disrupt drug release. Here, we report a mechanically resilient soft hydrogel that rapidly self-heals under conditions resembling human runnin

International migration, economic policy and human capital accumulation: a simulation study.

"This paper examines the economic policy implications of international migration and human capital accumulation within a dynamic general equilibrium model. Each country produces by means of physical and human capital of two types (skilled and unskilled labour). Along optimal growth paths in a world of diverging population growth rates immigration can only be beneficial when the free rider effect (i.e., not paying for training costs) exceeds the capital dilution effect of an increase in population growth. Under quite general conditions the optimal immigration rate is zero."

The relationship of functional movement screen score with balance, core endurance, and musculoskeletal system injuries in CrossFit athletes.

BACKGROUND: CrossFit training, which includes functional exercises and improves various physical parameters, has become increasingly popular in recent years. Since CrossFit is a high-intensity training program, injury rate and risk factors must be evaluated. This study aims to determine the relationship between the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) score and balance, core endurance, and musculoskeletal system injuries in CrossFit athletes. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 52 CrossFit athletes. FMS assessed biomechanical abnormalities, fundamental movement patterns, and asymmetries

Heart-Rate Variability in Elite Synchronized Swimmers.

PURPOSE: To determine whether heart-rate variability (HRV) was correlated with other training-load and training-tolerance markers for monitoring the effect of a training session on elite synchronized swimmers. METHODS: The authors recorded the resting HRV of 12 elite swimmers (mean age = 21.5 [3.5] y) 3 times over 1 wk with a cadence of 48 h prior to the 2015 World Swimming Championships. They continuously monitored heart rate and obtained salivary cortisol (SC) samples before and after the last training session of the week. The authors measured capillary blood lactate (La) 2, 4, and 8 min af

Physiological Implications, Performance Assessment and Risk Mitigation Strategies of Women in Combat-Centric Occupations.

Women have historically featured in military conflicts, but were not formally integrated into the military until the 20th century; occupations were mainly restricted to clerical or support roles. An increasing number of occupations have been opened to women and the higher physical demands of combat roles present new challenges. Inherent biological differences between sexes require women to work harder when undertaking the same tasks as men. This is reflected, in part, by the greater risk of musculoskeletal injuries of women observed notably during integrated military training. Gender "neutral"

Physicochemical properties of antibiotics: A review with an emphasis on detection in the aquatic environment.

Antibiotics have extensively been applied to rescue a great number of lives through prevention and treatment of contagious diseases and infections. They are either natural or human-made substances, which are broadly employed for promoting the health condition of human, plant, and animal. However, antibiotics are known to exert detrimental impacts on useful and nontarget microbiota of the biological system due to the overuse, continuous discharge into the environment, and subsequently aggregation in various environmental matrices. Physical and chemical properties help to evaluate whether a subs
