[Amusia and its topic specification].

A historical development of views on amusia and its clinical phenomenology is reviewed. The authors present a case of atypical amusia in a patient aged 32 years with glioma of the right temporal lobe including the upper temporal gyrus. Amusia was combined with euphoria and disturbances of evaluation of speech intonation. It has been assumed that different mechanisms implicated with different regions of both brain hemispheres may underlie amusia. Sometimes these mechanisms appear to be universal, e.g. disorders of symbolic gnosis in posterior hemisphere lesions, being comorbid with amusia as di

Auditory masking in three pinnipeds: aerial critical ratios and direct critical bandwidth measurements.

This study expands the limited understanding of pinniped aerial auditory masking and includes measurements at some of the relatively low frequencies predominant in many pinniped vocalizations. Behavioral techniques were used to obtain aerial critical ratios (CRs) within a hemianechoic chamber for a northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris), a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina), and a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus). Simultaneous, octave-band noise maskers centered at seven test frequencies (0.2-8.0 kHz) were used to determine aerial CRs. Narrower and variable bandwidth masking no

Perceived pitch of synthesized voice with alternate cycles.

Both in normal speech voice and in some types of pathological voice, adjacent vocal cycles may alternate in amplitude or period, or both. When this occurs, the determination of voice fundamental frequency (defined as number of vocal cycles per second) becomes difficult. The present study attempts to address this issue by investigating how human listeners perceive the pitch of alternate cycles. As stimuli, vowels /a/ and /i/ were synthesized with fundamental frequencies at 140 Hz and 220 Hz, and the effect of alternate cycles was simulated with both amplitude- and frequency-modulation of the gl

The Motor of Time: Coupling Action to Temporally Predictable Events Heightens Perception.

Timing and motor function share neural circuits and dynamics, which underpin their close and synergistic relationship. For instance, the temporal predictability of a sensory event optimizes motor responses to that event. Knowing when an event is likely to occur lowers response thresholds, leading to faster and more efficient motor behavior though in situations of response conflict can induce impulsive and inappropriate responding. In turn, through a process of active sensing, coupling action to temporally predictable sensory input enhances perceptual processing. Action not only hones perceptio

Auditory Feedback Control of Vocal Pitch in Spasmodic Dysphonia.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Hearing plays an important role in the maintenance of vocal control in normal individuals. In patients with spasmodic dysphonia (SD), however, the ability to maintain sustained control of phonation is impaired. The origins of SD are unknown, and it is unclear whether auditory feedback-dependent vocal control is compromised in these patients. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective case-control study. METHODS: We tested 15 SD patients and 11 age-matched controls. Voice recordings were performed while subjects repeated the vowel /e/ and auditory feedback of their vocal sounds was alte

Modulation of electric brain responses evoked by pitch deviants through transcranial direct current stimulation.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by a difficulty detecting pitch deviation that is related to abnormal electrical brain responses. Abnormalities found along the right fronto-temporal pathway between the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and the auditory cortex (AC) are the likely neural mechanism responsible for amusia. To investigate the causal role of these regions during the detection of pitch deviants, we applied cathodal (inhibitory) transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over right frontal and right temporal regions during separate testing sessions. We

The effect of interaural fluctuation rate on correlation change discrimination.

While bilateral cochlear implants (CIs) provide some binaural benefits, these benefits are limited compared to those observed in normal-hearing (NH) listeners. The large frequency-to-electrode allocation bandwidths (BWs) in CIs compared to auditory filter BWs in NH listeners increases the interaural fluctuation rate available for binaural unmasking, which may limit binaural benefits. The purpose of this work was to investigate the effect of interaural fluctuation rate on correlation change discrimination and binaural masking-level differences in NH listeners presented a CI simulation using a p

Uniform degradation of auditory acuity in subjects with normal hearing leads to unequal precedence effects.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether a controlled unilateral reduction in auditory acuity at the higher audiometric frequencies would have an effect on the variability in responses obtained on a task designed to measure the precedence effect. DESIGN: The experiment was conducted with participants located in a large sound proof, anechoic room, and psychophysical tests were conducted with long-duration noise burst stimuli. Reduction in auditory acuity was created by inserting a specially designed earplug in the ear of participants with normal hearing. The earplugs produce

Weighting of Spectral and Temporal Cues with n-of-m Cochlear Implant Strategies Depends on Voice Pitch.

PURPOSE: The relative contributions of spectral and temporal cues to voice pitch perception in cochlear implant (CI) users remain unclear. This study aimed to directly quantify these contributions in dynamic speech stimuli with clinical n-of-m processors. METHODS: Fundamental frequency (F0) discrimination was measured using consonant-vowel triplets in two experiments. Sixteen (eight female) postlingually deaf adult CI users with n-of-m strategies participated in experiment 1 (F0 range 76-242 Hz). Five (three female) also participated in experiment 2 (F0 range 242-768 Hz). Stimuli were present…

Individual Voice Dimensions' Prediction of Overall Dysphonia Severity on Two Auditory-Perceptual Scales.

BACKGROUND: Auditory-perceptual evaluation of dysphonic voice is an essential clinical activity that characterizes the nature of dysphonia and aids in planning its clinical management. Although there are multidimensional acoustic measures that correlate well with overall severity ratings, they tend to include measures that have only small or moderate correlations with individual voice characteristics frequently perceptually measured (e.g., breathiness or roughness). Given this difference between perceptual and acoustic measures, it is unclear how much individual voice characteristics contribut

The timbre of the voice as perceived by the singer him-/herself.

Fifteen professional singers sang simple vocal exercises at different pitches. The sung excerpts were recorded, and seven modified versions were created from each recording. The modifications were then played to the participant and (s)he had to assess the similarity of these stimuli to the perception of his/her own voice during the act of singing. Participants rated as most similar those stimuli which were modified by the filter whose frequency response most closely resembled a trapezoid, which was created by taking into account 1) the diffracting air conduction component from the mouth of the

Single-neuron labeling and chronic cochlear pathology. III. Stereocilia damage and alterations of threshold tuning curves.

Tuning curves were obtained from 100 to 150 auditory-nerve fibers spanning the range of characteristic frequencies (CFs) in each of eight cases of permanent noise-induced and three cases of permanent kanamycin-induced threshold shift. In each ear, from one to six neurons were intracellularly labeled with horseradish peroxidase. Locating the labeled terminals in plastic-embedded surface preparations of the cochlea enabled us to accurately correlate particular tuning-curve abnormalities with the condition of the sensory cells generating them. The correlations between structural and functional ch

Development and evaluation of pk-Ctone: A computationally efficient strategy for enhanced Mandarin tone perception in cochlear implants.

Conventional cochlear implant (CI) strategies convey limited tonal information. Although fundamental frequency (F0)-based strategies, such as C-tone, which combines F0 extraction with amplitude envelope modulation, improve Mandarin tone perception, their high computational demands hinder integration into power- and resource-constrained devices. This study evaluates a lexical tone enhancement CI strategy, pk-Ctone, that employs a computationally efficient local extrema-based F0 detection algorithm. Acoustic evaluations on two Mandarin monosyllabic corpora assessed both the coarse-scale robustne

Behavioural and electrophysiological assessment of temporal resolution in normally-hearing listeners with tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus and its pathophysiological mechanisms need more investigation because tinnitus may change the typical processing of sounds in the auditory system. Poor temporal resolution, which is not assessed with conventional subjective tinnitus evaluations, has been reported in some tinnitus sufferers. DESIGN: This study used a gap-in-noise paradigm to assess temporal resolution in tinnitus sufferers using both behavioural and electrophysiologic methods. STUDY SAMPLE: 19 participants with unilateral tinnitus and a control group without tinnitus participated in this study. Both wide-b

Neural substrates related to auditory working memory comparisons in dyslexia: an fMRI study.

Adult readers with developmental phonological dyslexia exhibit significant difficulty comparing pseudowords and pure tones in auditory working memory (AWM). This suggests deficient AWM skills for adults diagnosed with dyslexia. Despite behavioral differences, it is unknown whether neural substrates of AWM differ between adults diagnosed with dyslexia and normal readers. Prior neuroimaging of adults diagnosed with dyslexia and normal readers, and post-mortem findings of neural structural anomalies in adults diagnosed with dyslexia support the hypothesis of atypical neural activity in temporopar

Auditory cortical change detection in adults with Asperger syndrome.

The present study investigated whether auditory deficits reported in children with Asperger syndrome (AS) are also present in adulthood. To this end, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from adults with AS for duration, pitch, and phonetic changes in vowels, and for acoustically matched non-speech stimuli. These subjects had enhanced mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitudes particularly for pitch and duration deviants, indicating enhanced sound-discrimination abilities. Furthermore, as reflected by the P3a, their involuntary orienting was enhanced for changes in non-speech sounds, but te

Quinine reduces the dynamic range of the human auditory system.

The aim of the study was to evaluate and quantify quinine-induced changes in the human auditory dynamic range, as a model for cochlear hearing loss. Six otologically normal volunteers (21-40 years old) received quinine hydrochloride (15 mg/kg body weight) in two identical oral doses and one intravenous infusion. Refined hearing tests were performed monaurally at threshold, at moderate hearing levels and at high hearing levels. Quinine induced a maximal pure-tone threshold shift of 23 dB (1000-2000 Hz). The increase in the psychoacoustical click threshold agreed with an increase in the detectio

The effect of interaural delay of the masker on masking-level differences in young and old adults.

Diotic (SoNo) thresholds and dichotic (S pi N pi tau) thresholds were measured for young and old adults using a 500-Hz pure-tone signal and broadband burst masking noise at 37 dB SPL/Hz. In the dichotic condition both the signal and the masker were phase reversed and the masker was presented with an interaural delay of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, 2, 3, or 5 ms. Masking-level differences (MLDs) were determined by subtracting dichotic thresholds from diotic thresholds. The SoNo thresholds for the old subjects did not differ significantly from those for the young subjects; however, when

[Structural changes in the auditory field in relation to age].

Using a category scale we measured the loudness of narrow band noises experienced in 3 age groups (15-23, 33-45, and 60-75 years old). The narrow band noises had center frequencies between .125 and 8 kHz with sound pressure levels of 60, 75, and 90 dB each. We found the well-known high-frequency loss. However, we also found a hypersensitivity at middle frequencies correlated with high-frequency loss. The presumable causes of this hypersensitivity and its consequences for hearing aid fitting will be discussed.
