A randomized placebo-blind study of the effect of low power laser on pain caused by irreversible pulpitis.

This randomized placebo-blind study aimed to evaluate the effect of laser phototherapy (LPT) on pain caused by symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (SIP). Sixty patients diagnosed with SIP were randomly assigned to treatment groups (n = 15): G1 (control), G2 (laser placebo-sham irradiation), G3 (laser irradiation at 780 nm, 40 mW, 4 J/cm2), and G4 (laser irradiation at 780 nm, 40 mW, 40 J/cm2). Spontaneous pain was recorded using a VAS score before (T0), immediately after (T1), and 15 min after treatment (T2). Local anesthetics failure during emergency endodontic treatment was also assessed. Ther

Effect of radial shock wave therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome: A prospective randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Three recent studies demonstrated the positive effect of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) for treating carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, none have entirely proved the effects of ESWT on CTS because all studies had a small sample size and lacked a placebo-controlled design. Moreover, radial ESWT (rESWT) has not been used to treat CTS. We conducted a prospective randomized, controlled, double-blinded study to assess the effect of rESWT for treating CTS. Thirty-four enrolled patients (40 wrists) were randomized into intervention and control groups (20 wrists in each). Participants in

Effect of quetiapine vs. placebo on response to two virtual public speaking exposures in individuals with social phobia.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical practice and open-label studies suggest that quetiapine (an atypical anti-psychotic) might improve symptoms for individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD). The purpose of this study was to provide a rigorous test of the acute impact of a single dose of quetiapine (25mg) on SAD symptoms. METHOD: Individuals with SAD (N=20) were exposed to a 4-min virtual reality (VR) public speaking challenge after having received quetiapine or placebo (double-blind) 1h earlier. A parallel VR challenge occurred 1 week later using a counter-balanced cross-over (within subject) design for

[Effect of intravenous magnesium sulfate on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations requiring hospitalization: a randomized placebo-controlled trial].

OBJECTIVE: Magnesium sulfate has been shown to have a bronchodilating effect in asthma, but this effect has not been clearly established in the context of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). For this reason we investigated the possible bronchodilating effect of magnesium sulfate in COPD exacerbations. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 24 patients with exacerbated COPD who required admission to our hospital's pneumology department. All patients underwent baseline spirometry and were subsequently randomized to groups in a double-blind crossover design. Patients received 1.5 g of magnes

Comparison of chronic morphine and placebo infusion in late gestation fetal lambs: effect upon survival and breathing movements.

A placebo-controlled, randomized study of the effect of a 10-day infusion of morphine (MOR) upon fetal survival and fetal breathing movements was done in late gestation lambs. MOR infusion at a rate of 3 mg.hr-1 did not affect fetal survival or the response of fetal breathing movements to hypercapnia. Chronic exposure to MOR increased the height of the integrated diaphragmatic electromyogram signal (IDIA), respiratory drive and inspiratory effort during periods of eucapnia. Respiratory drive was determined by the product of IDIA height and breathing frequency, and inspiratory effort was the qu

A placebo-controlled comparison of the effect of nortriptyline and phenelzine on orthostatic hypotension in elderly depressed patients.

Seventy-five patients, 55 years or older, were treated for major depression with either nortriptyline, phenelzine, or placebo during a 7-week period. There was a significantly greater mean orthostatic fall in systolic pressure in patients treated with nortriptyline and phenelzine as compared to the placebo group, but no significant difference was evident between the nortriptyline and phenelzine groups. The orthostatic changes appeared during the first week of treatment and were not correlated with plasma level of nortriptyline, percent platelet monoamine oxidase inhibition, or pretreatment ort

Beneficial effect of nadolol on anxiety-induced disturbances of performance in musicians: a comparison with diazepam and placebo.

The effects of 40 mg nadolol versus 2 mg diazepam on performance anxiety of 33 young music students were determined. The study had a double-blind, crossover design and was placebo controlled. Nadolol attenuated the rise in pulse rate caused by anxiety and improved those aspects of string playing that can be adversely affected by tremor. There was also a tendency for other functions requiring coordination and judgment to improve. No effect on anxiety was noted for nadolol or for 2 mg diazepam. Diazepam, however, did cause some minor deterioration of performance that was not related to anxiety c

The effect of metoclopramide (Primperan) on the pyloric sphincter during gastroscopic examination. A double blind investigation versus placebo.

The effect of metoclopramide and placebo on relaxation of a spasmodic pylorus during gastroscopy have been compared using a double blind technique. Metoclopramide showed a better result and the difference between its effect and the effect of placebo is statistically significant (p less than 0.01). Metoclopramide is a useful agent during gastroscopic examination in cases of spasmodic pylorus. It facilitates the passage of the gestroscope through the spasmodic pyloric sphincter. The reported relaxation and dilatation of the pyloric sphincter clarifies the amelioration of symptoms in different ga

Clinical pain increased with older brain age, yet placebo effects were preserved.

Chronic pain is linked to accelerated brain aging, often measured through the brain-age gap (BAG), the difference between chronological age … trolling for sex and race. However, neither estimated brain age nor BAG influenced the magnitude of placebo effects. These findings suggest that while older brain age is associated with greater chronic pain severity and interference, placebo effects remain robust despite age-related changes in the brain, highlighting the therapeutic potential of placebo effects …
