A rare and atypical type of chorangioma is presented. The tumor was unusual in three aspects: (a) clinically, it was delivered after the placenta and required lavage; (b) grossly, the lesion was quite large; and (c) most importantly, it exhibited histologic features suggestive of sarcoma. Immunochemical staining of the tumor for factor VIII antigen demonstrated its endothelial origin. However, the tumor lacked evidence of invasion or biological aggressiveness. Approximately 6 per cent of placentae of babies admitted to a special care paediatric unit show evidence of peripheral villous stem branch oedema. In more than half of these cases there is evidence of fibrinous vasculosis (FV) in truncal veins. The affected placentae are generally thick and of small diameter, often of extrachorialis type, very congested and often cyanosed. A series of 193 cases of abruptio placentae in a hospital population of 35,217 is described. This is an incidence of 0.55%. In the series both age and parity, but not pre-eclampsia or anaemia, are significant associated factors. The recurrence rate of abruptio placentae was 5.6%. There were no maternal deaths and the perinatal mortality was 35%. Epidural analgesia does not abolish the pain of the abruptio placentae in spite of abolishing the pain of labour.

The sheep desmochorionic placenta has been studied at aseptic inflammation produced by suturing it together with the uterus. The inflammatory process is evident from a decreased intensity of leucocytic phase and trophoblast participation in macrophagal phase; cytotrophoblastic elements and diplocariocytes transform into symplastic structures which seem to accomplish dendritic lysis and resorption. The foreign body incapsulation is performed with the maternal and fetal connective tissue participation.
