16S rRNA Gene Sequencing Analysis and Caspase-3 Expression by Propolis Ameliorated Oxaliplatin-Induced Toxicity in Female Rattus norvegicus Pre- and During Pregnancy.

Propolis, a natural resinous substance collected by honeybees from plant exudates, has gained considerable attention as a promising complementary therapeutic agent owing to its broad-spectrum pharmacological activities. Oxaliplatin (OXA), a platinum analogue, is one of the most effective chemotherapeutic agents commonly used in chemotherapy for colorectal malignancies. Previous investigations have confirmed that OXA has a severe hazardous effect on pregnant mothers and their progeny. Propolis extract has been suggested to confer potent antioxidant and free radical-scavenging abilities in sever…

First Report of Pomegranate Wilt Caused by Ceratocystis fimbriata in Yunnan, China.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum Linn.) is an important fruit crop in Yunnan Province, China. Recently, older pomegranate bushes in Mengzi County, Yunnan began dying. Initial symptoms were yellowing and wilting of leaves on one to several branches, followed by sudden death of the bush within 3 to 4 weeks. Roots of diseased bushes appeared brown to black, and irregularly shaped lesions were observed when the bark was removed. A species of Ceratocystis was consistently isolated from discolored roots, stem, and branch tissues from wilted bushes on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and was identified as Cera

Light-Root Microbiome Interactions in Vegetable Crops: From Photoreceptor Signaling to Exudate-Mediated Recruitment.

In protected cultivation, light intensity, spectral quality, red/far-red ratio, photoperiod and diel fluctuation can alter the belowground biological environment by modifying carbon allocation, root architecture, root exudation, nutrient acquisition, immune tone and rhizosphere physicochemistry. Direct community-level evidence in vegetables remains sparse, but targeted experiments on bacterial colonization, arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis, beneficial fungi and root pathogens show that light can condition specific plant-microbe interactions. This review develops a molecular framework for light

Hierarchically engineered injectable hydrogels loaded with polyphenol for enhanced wound healing and tissue regeneration.

The healing of deep wounds is severely impeded by the converging pathophysiology of persistent inflammation, oxidative stress, bacterial infection, and many other factors that necessitate an ideal solution that simultaneously targets multiple barriers to accelerate the healing of wounds. Here, we report SCLP, a multifunctional, dynamically cross-linked hierarchical hydrogel network synthesised through the strategic integration of a lab-synthesised spermine-gellan gum conjugate (S), chondroitin sulfate (C), LAPONITE®-polyethyleneimine (L-PEI) nanohybrids, and the plant-derived polyphenol protoc

Synthesis, Antifungal Activity, and Plant Systemic Mobility of Amino Acid Conjugates of a Thiasporine A-Derived Phenylthiazole Scaffold.

To develop fungicidal candidates with both high antifungal activity and phloem mobility, a total of 34 2-[2-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl]thiazole-4-carbonyl amino acid and amino acid ester conjugates were designed and synthesized. Their structures were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS. Their in vitro antifungal activities against five phytopathogenic fungi and their phloem and xylem mobility in castor bean seedlings were subsequently evaluated. The results showed that the amino acid conjugates 9a-9p generally exhibited higher antifungal activity than the corresponding amino acid ester co

Wound induced tanscriptional regulation of benzylisoquinoline pathway and characterization of wound inducible PsWRKY transcription factor from Papaver somniferum.

Wounding is required to be made in the walls of the green seed pod of Opium poppy prior exudation of latex. To withstand this kind of trauma plants regulate expression of some metabolites through an induced transcript level. 167 unique wound-inducible ESTs were identified by a repetitive round of cDNA subtraction after 5 hours of wounding in Papaver somniferum seedlings. Further repetitive reverse northern analysis of these ESTs revealed 80 transcripts showing more than two fold induction, validated through semi-quantitative RT-PCR & real time expression analysis. One of the major classified c

Localization, conjugation, and function of salicylic acid in tobacco during the hypersensitive reaction to tobacco mosaic virus.

Salicylic acid (SA) is hypothesized to be a natural signal that triggers the systemic induction of pathogenesis-related proteins and disease resistance in tobacco. When Xanthi-nc (NN genotype) tobacco was inoculated with tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) there was an increase in endogenous SA in both inoculated and virus-free leaves. The highest levels of SA were detected in and around necrotic lesions that formed in response to TMV. Chemical and enzymatic hydrolysis of extracts from TMV-inoculated leaves demonstrated the presence of a SA conjugate tentatively identified as O-beta-D-glucosyl-SA. The

Fate of Dissolved Nitrogen in a Horizontal Levee: Seasonal Fluctuations in Nitrate Removal Processes.

Horizontal levees are a nature-based approach for removing nitrogen from municipal wastewater effluent while simultaneously providing additional benefits, such as flood control. To assess nitrogen removal mechanisms and the efficacy of a horizontal levee, we monitored an experimental system receiving nitrified municipal wastewater effluent for 2 years. Based on mass balances and microbial gene abundance data, we determined that much of the applied nitrogen was most likely removed by heterotrophic denitrifiers that consumed labile organic carbon from decaying plants and added wood chips. Hydrogen Sulfide Alleviates Aluminum Toxicity via Decreasing Apoplast and Symplast Al Contents in Rice.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays a vital role in Al3+ stress resistance in plants, but the underlying mechanism is unclear. In the present study, pretreatment with 2 μM of the H2S donor NaHS significantly alleviated the inhibition of root elongation caused by Al toxicity in rice roots, which was accompanied by a decrease in Al contents in root tips under 50 μM Al3+ treatment. NaHS pretreatment decreased the negative charge in cell walls by reducing the activity of pectin methylesterase and decreasing the pectin and hemicellulose contents in rice roots. This treatment also masked Al-binding sites i

Thiol-reactive compounds from garlic inhibit the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC).

The epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) is a key factor in the transepithelial movement of sodium, and consequently salt and water homeostasis in various organs. Dysregulated activity of ENaC is associated with human diseases such as hypertension, the salt-wasting syndrome pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary oedema or intestinal disorders. Therefore it is important to identify novel compounds that affect ENaC activity. This study investigated if garlic (Allium sativum) and its characteristic organosulfur compounds have impact on ENaCs. Human ENaCs were heterologously expres

Interactive effects of solar UV radiation and climate change on biogeochemical cycling.

This report assesses research on the interactions of UV radiation (280-400 nm) and global climate change with global biogeochemical cycles at the Earth's surface. The effects of UV-B (280-315 nm), which are dependent on the stratospheric ozone layer, on biogeochemical cycles are often linked to concurrent exposure to UV-A radiation (315-400 nm), which is influenced by global climate change. These interactions involving UV radiation (the combination of UV-B and UV-A) are central to the prediction and evaluation of future Earth environmental conditions. There is increasing evidence that elevated

Aquaporin gene expression and apoplastic water flow in bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) leaves in relation to the light response of leaf hydraulic conductance.

It has previously been shown that hydraulic conductance in bur oak leaves (Quercus macrocarpa Michx.), measured with the high pressure flow meter technique (HPFM), can significantly increase within 30 min following exposure to high irradiance. The present study investigated whether this increase could be explained by an increase in the cell-to-cell pathway and whether the response is linked to changes in the transcript level corresponding to aquaporin genes. Four cDNA sequences showing high similarity to members of the aquaporin gene family from other plant species were characterized from bur
