The synthesis and accumulation of active ingredients in medicinal plants are distributed in specific organs, tissues, and cell types, which are important for the exploitation of medicinal plants. However, the fine distribution of active ingredients is difficult to know. Here, the system of mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) integrated with single-cell RNA sequencing was established for the first time in Andrographis paniculata (A. paniculata), a medicinal plant widely utilised in China and Southeast Asia. MSI shows specific distribution of andrographolides in A. paniculata, with higher accumulati

Optimization of plant architecture requires precise regulation of internode elongation; however, the post-translational mechanisms that integrate microRNA and phytohormone signaling remain poorly understood. Here, we describe a hierarchical miR164e-NAC32-DELLA regulatory network that controls stem development in maize. Genetic analyses demonstrate that ZmmiR164e negatively regulates its target gene ZmNAC32, with ZmmiR164e overexpression enhancing internode cell elongation and loss-of-function resulting in dwarfism. Notably, ZmNAC32 physically interacts with and stabilizes the DELLA protein ZmD

Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal that is highly toxic to plants and animals and can accumulate in the environment as a result of industrial activities and agricultural application of some types of phosphate fertilizer. This study aimed to assess the role of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), as a source of nitric oxide (NO) in alleviating Cd stress in maize plants. Maize plants were kept in soil saturated with 40%-strength nutrient solution in a greenhouse, and cadmium nitrate, Cd(NO3)2, was applied at different concentrations, (0, 10, and 50 µM). Sodium nitroprusside, [Fe(CN)5NO]·2H2O, at concentration

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) is a Cd/Zn-accumulator whereas soil conditioners such as biochars may immobilize trace elements. These potentially complementary soil remediation options were trialed, singly and in combination, in a pot experiment with a metal(loid)-contaminated technosol.
METHODS: The technosol [total content in mg kg(-1) Zn 6089, Cd 9.4, Cu 110, and Pb 956] was either amended (2% w/w) or not with a poultry manure-derived biochar. Rapeseed was cultivated for both soil treatments during 24 weeks up to harvest under controlled conditions.
RESULTS: Biochar inc

L-Kynurenine (KYN) and kynurenic acid (KYNA) are products of the metabolism of L-tryptophan (TRP) in the central nervous system of animals, but they are not commonly found in plants. In particular, KYNA is known for its interesting pharmacological properties (anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic, and neuroprotective), which suggest a potential functional food ingredient role. The three compounds were identified in samples of Cannabis sativa L. by means of high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry using an untargeted metabolomics approach. Geophytes are plants that produce underground storage organs such as tubers, rhizomes, and bulbs, to facilitate asexual reproduction and withstand a myriad of environmental challenges. While the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) serves as the primary model for studying tuberization, the genetic mechanisms encoding this trait across diverse angiosperm lineages remains unclear. This study utilized a phylogenomic-transcriptomic approach to compare tuber development across nine tuberizing species with five nontuberizing sister taxa. We identified orthologs of key potato tuberization genes that exhibit

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation directly regulates a multitude of herbivore life processes, in addition to indirectly affecting insect success via changes in plant chemistry and morphogenesis. Here we looked at plant and insect (aphid and whitefly) exposure to supplemental UV-A radiation in the glasshouse environment and investigated effects on insect population growth. Glasshouse grown peppers and eggplants were grown from seed inside cages covered by novel plastic filters, one transparent and the other opaque to UV-A radiation. At a 10-true leaf stage for peppers (53 days) and 4-true leaf stage f

Two new species of the Neotropical jumping plant-louse genus Mitrapsylla Crawford (Hemiptera: Psylloidea: Psyllidae: Ciriacreminae) are described from the highlands of the state of Minas Gerais in the Southeast Region of Brazil. Both species are associated with Chamaecrista (Fabaceae: Caesalpinioideae) and represent the first records of Psylloidea from this plant genus. Chamaecrista, especially its section Absus, has many species endemic to the Cerrado and Caatinga biomes in eastern Brazil. They are characterised by the presence of glandular trichomes that produce sticky secretion that hinders

Clavibacter michiganensis is a xylem-colonizing and seed-borne phytopathogen that causes bacterial canker disease in tomato plants. In this study, we aimed to determine the colonization patterns of C. michiganensis, as well as the histological changes in tomato plants during infection. To achieve these, GFP-tagged C. michiganensis was inoculated into tomato plants using three methods: stem injection, soil drenching with or without prior root cutting, and cotton-pad inoculation. After inoculation, bacterial colonization was observed using GFP signals, and histological changes were examined usin

Herbicides are applied in agricultural practices to manage weeds. How these herbicides applied before maize emergence (Zea mays L.) might affect the rhizosphere and endophytic bacterial community is still largely unknown. In this study, plots were treated with 400 g paraquat ha-1 (Gramoxone®, paraquat ion 20% w/w), 1,089 g glyphosate ha-1 (Faena®, potassium salt of glyphosate 446 g/L) or weeds were hand removed before maize emerged and the bacterial community was determined in the bulk soil at the start of the experiment, in the bulk soil, rhizosphere, roots and stem at flowering (after 101 da

Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocarrier systems have been widely studied for their effectiveness in controlling plant pests and diseases under indoor conditions. However, their field efficacy, environmental degradation dynamics, and biosafety remain insufficiently explored. In this study, we systematically evaluated the wetting properties of eight surfactants on rice leaf surfaces and identified polyethylene glycol octylphenyl ether (TX-100) as the most effective surfactant. TX-100 significantly enhances the adhesion and retention of pectin-coated iron-based metal-organic framework nanoparti

Passion fruit green spot disease was first identified in 1997 after a severe outbreak at Vera Cruz County, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Mature yellow fruits of Passiflora edulis Simms f. flavicarpa Degener showed characteristic green spots, 2-5 mm in diameter and patches of green tissues were present on senescent leaves. The devastating effect to passion flower is caused by necrotic lesions that encircle the stems and kill the plant. In severe cases, entire orchards of a few hectares in size have been completely destroyed. The disease was always preceded by heavy infestations of Brevipalpus pho

Wearable bio-based fibers are emerging as platforms for biomechanical sensing and physiological interaction. However, achieving high sensitivity to subtle mechanical cues while maintaining flexibility, self-powered output, and distributed perception remains challenging. Inspired by the helical twining mechanics of climbing plant stems, we design a mechano-adaptive auxetic electronic bio-based fiber as an embodied intelligence sensing unit. The dual-modulus helical confinement, achieved by wrapping rigid aramid fiber/polydimethylsiloxane helices around a flexible collagen aggregate/waterborne p…

SO2 derivatives (SO32-/HSO3-) are essential intermediates in plant sulfur metabolism and are extensively used as preservatives and antioxidants in the food industry, highlighting the urgent need for efficient, on-spot methods for their accurate quantification. Herein, we present GL, a rationally designed dual-mode probe that combines colorimetric and ratiometric near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence responses for SO32- detection. GL exhibits strong intrinsic NIR fluorescence and, upon reaction with SO32- via a specific nucleophilic addition mechanism, produces both a visible color change and a rati
