OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the association between plasma homocysteine (Hcy) and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in coronary artery disease (CAD).
METHODS: Blood mononuclear cells were isolated from CAD (n = 30) patients and non-CAD controls (n = 30). Flow cytometric analysis and an in vitro culture system was used to evaluate the number and function of the EPC. Plasma homocysteine (Hcy) concentration was measured by an automated fluorescence polarization immunoassay.

IgG4-related disease has been recently described. This disease occurs in various anatomic locations including pancreas, biliary tract, liver, retroperitoneum, kidney, breast, lung, thyroid gland, prostate, salivary gland, lacrimal gland, and lymph node. Rasmussen encephalitis (RE) is a rare form of severe unihemispheric epilepsy established to be an autoimmune disease. Here we demonstrate the presence of autoantibodies against Munc18-1 in 20% of patients collective with biopsy-proven RE. Intriguingly, brain biopsy specimens of these patients showed a striking perivascular accentuated infiltration of B-lymphocytes and plasma cells, suggesting a subgroup of RE patients harboring Munc18-1 antibodies and concomitant B- and plasma cell infiltration.

A 69-year-old female with rheumatoid arthritis was admitted to our hospital with facial flushing and cervical lymphadenopathy on Jan, 2006. Immunoglobulin synthesizing plasma cells for IgG were quantitated in 20 periapical granulomas and 20 periapical cysts, using unlabelled antibody peroxidase-antiperoxidase complex method. Result showed that immunoglobulin G producing plasma cells were predominant in periapical cyst as compared with periapical granuloma. A statistical significant relation was observed between these two lesions.

The activity of acid phosphatase in bone marrow plasma cells was investigated by a cytochemical method in 12 patients with multiple myeloma, in 12 patients with benign monoclonal gammopathy and in 5 normal controls. The activity of acid phosphatase was significantly higher in the multiple myeloma patients compared with the activity observed in controls and in benign monoclonal gammopathy patients (p less than 0.001). It is therefore suggested that this method may be a valuable adjunct in the differential diagnosis of monoclonal immunoglobulinemias .

The diagnosis of chronic endometritis depends upon the detection of plasma cells within the inflammatory infiltrate in the endometrium. In the present study, the relationships between percentage of bone marrow plasma cells (BMP%), tumor cell mass, stage, and survival are statistically analyzed in a large number (90) of monoclonal gammopathies (MG). Though BMP% has not been included among the criteria for the staging of multiple myeloma, our results indicate that the above mentioned parameters correlate at highly significant degrees. BMP% is therefore proposed as a new, useful parameter in the staging of MG.
