Zoom Boom or Bust? Understanding Post-Pandemic Interest in Facial Plastic Surgery via Google Trends.

OBJECTIVE: To understand post-pandemic interest in plastic surgery procedures via Joinpoint analysis of Google Trends search data. METHODS: Google Trends was used to quantify search volumes from January 2019-December 2022 for select cosmetic face and body procedures in the United States. A keyword analytic tool (Keywords Everywhere) extracted absolute search volumes (average monthly searches). Joinpoint analysis assessed search trends over time reported as monthly percentage change (MPC). RESULTS: All procedures queried, including a non-cosmetic control (cataract surgery), demonstrated expec…

A commentary on the need for minimum information for studies evaluating biologics in plastic surgery.

Biologics including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are increasingly utilized in plastic surgery for applications ranging from facial rejuvenation to wound healing. However, the literature currently contains heterogeneous reporting that undermines evidence synthesis and clinical application. A recent systematic review found that the vast majority of authors failed to disclose final platelet concentrations, concluding that systematic evaluation is limited by high heterogeneity in preparation protocols.3 Orthopedic surgery addressed this problem in 2017 by developing

Chondrolaryngoplasty.

Chondrolaryngoplasty is a well-described surgical procedure most commonly performed as part of facial feminization surgery for transgender patients with a diagnosis of gender dysphoria. A complete understanding of relevant neck anatomy and laryngeal function is critical to optimizing surgical outcomes. The overall goal of the procedure is to maximally reduce the thyroid cartilage prominence while preserving laryngeal integrity and minimizing the risk of external scarring. Among available approaches, the bronchoscopic-assisted technique with intraoperative needle localization has been demonstra

[Oculoplastics and Orbital Surgery Section: Orbital Fractures].

Oculoplastics is a subspecialty of ophthalmology that focuses on a wide range of disorders affecting the orbit, lacrimal system, and eyelids. In this review, we examine orbital fractures with a focus on mechanisms of injury, clinical and radiologic evaluation, and surgical decision-making. We outline the common fracture patterns and their functional and aesthetic implications, discuss the criteria guiding conservative versus surgical management, and review contemporary surgical approaches along with recent technological advances in orbital reconstruction.

Radial head replacement versus reconstruction for the treatment of the terrible triad injury of the elbow: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The terrible triad injury of the elbow (TTIE) remains challenging to manage and has been associated with high complication rates and poor outcomes. There is a trend towards performing radial head replacement (REP) in preference to radial head reconstruction (REC) as arthroplasty provides early stability and may allow mobilisation sooner, potentially resulting in a better functional outcome. This systematic review compares the outcome of patients with TTIE treated with either REC or REP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL were searched for studies published in Eng

The Use of Pedicled Perforator Flaps in Chest Reconstruction: A Systematic Review of Outcomes and Reliability.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, pedicled perforator flaps have revolutionized plastic surgery by reducing donor site morbidity and ensuring larger and deeper reconstructions with local pedicled cutaneous flaps. The aim of the study was to make a systematic review of perforator pedicled propeller flaps (PPPFs) in chest reconstruction. METHODS: Pubmed and Cochrane databases were searched from 1989 to October 2016 for articles describing the use of PPPFs in chest reconstruction. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta analyses statement was used in the selection process. The r

[Infective endocarditis: considerations regarding optimal timing for surgical treatment].

BACKGROUND: Treatment of infective endocarditis is primarily conservative. Persistent infection, tissue destruction und hemodynamic instabilities argue - in dependence on the microorganisms involved - for an urgent surgical treatment, even when there is still no control of the local and systemic infection. For timing of the surgical intervention, the following suggestions seem to be valid: TIMING OF THE SURGICAL INTERVENTION: Delayed surgical indication is considered a prognostic factor of extraordinary relevance for surgical treatment of infective endocarditis. Presence of intramyocardial, pa

[A new method of thumb reconstruction using big and second toe elements].

The author's modification of thumb reconstruction using the big and second toe elements is presented. Two separate parts were raised on one common pedicle to form future thumb. The main element including bones, tendons and soft tissues were taken from the second toe. The flap comprising nail radix, matrix and lateral fragment of the second toe pulp was prepared and left in situ. Similar flap was raised on the hallux. Winding of the hallux flap round the second toe part allowed to form nearly normal thumb. The nail radix and matrix were harvested subperiosteally without any bone fragments of di

Anatomy of secretory glands in the eyelid and conjunctiva: a photographic review.

The eyelid and conjunctiva are main targets in ophthalmic plastic surgery. Although dry eyes are known to occasionally occur after ophthalmic plastic surgery, little attention has been paid to the secretory glands in the eyelid and conjunctiva. The secretary glands in the eyelid and conjunctiva contain the main lacrimal gland, accessory lacrimal glands of Wolfring and Krause, goblet cells, ciliary glands of Moll and Zeis, and the meibomian gland of the tarsal plate. Understanding the details of these glands is helpful in preventing and managing secretion reduction after oculoplastic procedures

COVID-19-associated trends in Medicare utilization for plastic and reconstructive surgery.

PURPOSE: The Medicare population is a subset of plastic surgery patients with unique needs and characteristics. Studies before COVID-19 have shown decreasing reimbursements and increasing charges. We aimed to characterize changes in Medicare reimbursements and charges in plastic and reconstructive (PR) surgery since the pandemic. METHODS: The CMS Medicare Physician & Other Practitioners database was used to analyze all procedural codes billed by PR surgeons from 2013 to 2023. Subgroup analysis was conducted based on the organ system (integumentary, musculoskeletal, nervous, and other). Primar

Trends and costs of plastic surgery claims in the NHS: A national analysis (2006-2025).

BACKGROUND: Litigation within surgical specialties continues to impose a growing financial burden on the National Health Services (NHS). Plastic surgery may be especially vulnerable to claims arising from clinical complications and unmet patient expectations. However, national trends in plastic surgery litigation have not been well characterised. To analyse the national trends, causes and costs associated with NHS plastic surgery litigation from 2006/07 to 2024/25 were assessed. METHODS: We analyzed anonymized clinical negligence claim data related to plastic surgery obtained from NHS Resolut

Occipital site deactivation for the treatment of chronic migraine: a minimally invasive approach.

In this paper, we describe our experience in treating migraine headache localized in the occipital area. Using our minimally-invasive approach, from June 2011 till January 2022, we have performed MH decompression surgery over 232 patients with occipital migraine trigger site. After a mean follow-up of 20 months (range, 3-62 months), patients complaining for occipital MH had 94% positive surgical outcome (86% complete MH elimination). Only rare minor complications were reported (e.g., oedema, paresthesia, ecchymosis, and numbness). Presented, in part, at the XXIV Annual Meeting European Society
