In this paper, presented at the Second Mediterranean Conference in Thoracic Oncology, I argue that we can now set aside extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) as a treatment for malignant pleural mesothelioma and consign it to the history of surgery. There is sufficient evidence to conclude that EPP offers neither survival benefit nor net gain in quality of life. Congenital unilateral absence of a pulmonary artery (UAPA) is a rare anomaly usually diagnosed in childhood. We report a case of isolated UAPA in an adult without any other cardiovascular anomaly. The patient was admitted for repeated progressive hemoptysis, which we treated with embolization of the bronchial artery three times, despite which the hemoptysis kept recurring. Finally, the patient was treated successfully by right pneumonectomy. Thus, we think that surgical intervention is indicated for recurrent hemoptysis in patients with isolated UAPA.

Primary lung neoplasia is a rare condition of older cats. This report describes a case of left-sided pulmonary collapse, secondary to pulmonary adenocarcinoma in an 11-year-old cat. Left sided pneumonectomy was performed, and adjuvant chemotherapy with mitoxantrone (Novantrone; Lederle) was administered every 3 to 5 weeks, for 10 doses after surgery. Thirty-four months after surgery, the cat remains well and has no radiographic evidence of pulmonary metastasis.

BACKGROUND: Completion pneumonectomy (CP) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. We reviewed our experience to evaluate whether induction treatment (IT) may affect postoperative outcomes and analyzed factors influencing long-term results.
METHODS: Between 1998 and 2020, 69 patients with lung cancer underwent CP (50 males, median age 63 years, right CP in 47 patients).
