Intradural lumbar cystic schwannomas are a very rare entity and only 10 case reports have been reported in the literature. The diagnosis and management remains a challenge for clinical physicians. Herein, we report a 51-year-old female presenting with lower back pain and radiating pain at the left upper thigh. Magnetic resonance images of lumbar spine demonstrated an intradural cystic mass approximately 18 x 17 x 35 mm in size occupying L4 to L5, which appeared as the same signal intensity as CSF. At operation, a well encapsulated cystic mass was found. The pathological examination confirmed a

INTRODUCTION: To determine the impact of cauda equina symptoms on male lower urinary tract function, we investigated the related risk factors in healthy Japanese men.
METHODS: Subjects included 345 healthy males (average age 56 years; range 26-83) who participated in the Iwaki Health Promotion Project in 2006. They were residents of Iwaki district, Hirosaki City, northern Japan. Using a self-administered, self-reported questionnaire for lumbar spinal stenosis and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), we investigated the prevalence of cauda equina symptoms. We also measured body mass in

STUDY DESIGN: Case report and clinical discussion.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a unique etiology for a patient presenting with exercise-induced lower extremity numbness found to have agenesis of the infrarenal inferior vena cava (IVC) and a large vein draining the confluence of the iliac veins through the L4 foramen into the epidural plexus.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Epidural venous abnormalities are infrequently determined to be the etiology of nerve root compression syndromes. Such cases have been described in patients with absent IVC with thrombosis. We are unaware of any previously describe

We report the observation of a 76-year-old female who was treated with percutaneous vertebroplasty for an L3 osteoporotic compression fracture. Fifteen days after this procedure, a cauda equina syndrome occurred. The neuroimaging studies showed worsening of the compression fracture and the appearance of a posterior wall displacement. Blood test results showed a moderate inflammatory syndrome resembling lymphangitides complicating a venous arm perfusion. Therapeutic options consisted of a combined surgical approach associating an anterior approach with implantation of a corporeal prosthesis and

28 year-old woman developed sensory loss in the gluteal region and involuntary micturition during sleep. After two days she arrived at the Department of neurology. Examination disclosed absence of the right ancle reflex (S1), sensory loss in the saddle area including the dermatomes S1-S5, absence of the ano cutan (S3-S5) and bulbocavernous reflexes (S3-S4). She had sphincter disturbance and a sensory palsy of the bladder, but no retention. She experienced no vertebral, radicular or other pain at any time. Because of the lack of pain, the tentative diagnosis was acute myelitis, and a CT scan wa

OBJECTIVE: To study whether there will be a permanent lumbar nerve root scarring or degeneration secondary to continuous compression followed by decompression on the nerve roots, which can account for postlaminectomy leg weakness or back pain.
METHODS: The study was performed at the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, King Abdul-Aziz University, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during 2003-2005. Twenty-six adult male New Zealand rabbits were used in the present study. The ventral roots of the left fourth lumbar nerve were clamped for 2 weeks then decompression was allowed by removal of

Cauda equina syndrome is a well-documented complication of uneventful lumbar microdiscectomy. In the vast majority of cases, no radiological explanation can be obtained. In this paper, the authors report two cases of postoperative cauda equina syndrome in patients undergoing single-level de novo lumbar microdiscectomy in which intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring was used. In both patients, the amplitudes of cortical and subcortical intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) abruptly decreased during discectomy and foraminotomy. In the first patient, a slow, partial impro

We report three cases of cauda equina syndrome following spinal anesthesia with dibucaine. In two cases, the lumbar puncture was repeated and additional doses of dibucaine were administered to obtain adequate sensory blockade. In the last case, spinal anesthesia worked well with single injection of dibucaine. In all cases patients complained of varying degrees of bladder and bowel dysfunction, perineal sensory loss and lower extremity motor weakness on the next day, and the diagnosis of cauda equina syndrome was made. With only one case, the symptom disappeared four months later, but the rest

The authors report a rare case of type-1 Gaucher disease with neurological and haematological involvement. The first onset was epilepsy, the diagnosis of GD1 was then confirmed and the patient experienced parkinsonism. The biological analysis revealed monoclonal gammapathy and factor-II mutation. The patient's condition worsened due to cauda equina syndrome. Magnetic resonance imaging and surgery revealed an intra-thecal sacral cyst which, to our knowledge, has not been reported previously; therefore, when confronted with the fractures commonly observed in GD1, other unusual causes of spinal c

Patients with beta-globin disorders show amelioration of clinical condition by sustained synthesis of fetal haemoglobin in adult life. We report data on a patient with beta(o)-thalassaemia genotype and thalassaemia intermedia clinical phenotype. He received therapy with hydroxyurea (20 mg/kg/d) because of the presence of extramedullary masses causing paraparesis, neurogenic bladder and impotence. During therapy, the patient showed an improved clinical picture and a significant increase in total Hb (from 71.8 to 103.2 g/L) and a gamma/alpha globin synthetic ratio (from 0.39 to 0.68). The myelos
