Rupture of Baker's cyst producing pseudothrombophlebitis in a patient with Reiter's syndrome.

This is an unusual case of pseudothrombophlebitis resulting from rupture of Baker's cyst in a patient with Reiter's syndrome. The patient presented with a swollen, painful left calf and persistent itching on the skin of the calf. Ultrasonography showed a ruptured popliteal cyst with minimal hemorrhage and fluid collection within the fascial compartments and gastrocnemius muscle. Color Doppler ultrasound showed a patent popliteal vein and artery and duplex Doppler scans revealed a normal flow pattern. In conclusion, the clinical picture of deep vein thrombosis and that of pseudothrombophlebitis…

Pseudothrombophlebitis in a patient with Behçet's syndrome: Doppler ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging findings.

A 33-year-old man with a known diagnosis of Behçet's syndrome (BS), presented with pseudothrombophlebitis resulting from acute rupture of a popliteal cyst. Doppler ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging findings are explained. Differentiation of rupture of a Baker's cyst from true thrombophlebitis, especially in patients with BS, who are potentially susceptible to thrombotic events, is extremely important.

Cystic Arterial Disease Localized in the Media of the Popliteal Artery With Dissection.

Adventitial cystic disease (ACD) of the popliteal artery is a rare disease that can cause intermittent claudication, and most cases show cysts located in the adventitia. We report a rare case with a cyst localized in the media and a dissection. The patient presented to the hospital with sudden-onset right lower limb pain. A lower limb ultrasound revealed an iso-echoic lesion in the right popliteal artery, leading to an initial diagnosis of thrombotic occlusion and subsequent thrombectomy. However, intravascular ultrasound suggested the lesion was outside the intima, and magnetic resonance imag

Localized hypertrophy of the semimembranosus muscle in a young athlete: a case report.

Popliteal fossa and distal thigh swellings have many causes in young active adult. Cysts are the main cause, but they may also evolve from fatty tissue, lymph nodes or the popliteal artery. Semimembranosus muscle hypertrophy, found in athletes and young active adults, is only rarely the main or only cause of swelling, and only four such cases are reported in the literature. The present article reports our experience in the management of a case of semimembranosus hypertrophy as the only cause of a swelling above the popliteal fossa, and its favorable evolution.

Case report of adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery presented with the ''dog-leg'' sign.

Adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery constitutes an infrequent cause of claudication in non-atherosclerotic young or middle-aged population. Here, we report the case of a 43-year-old female with adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery causing left lower leg claudication, detected by duplex scanning. The angio-CT showed the "dog-leg" sign, typical of the aneurysm of the popliteal artery. Surgery was performed through the posterior approach. The cyst and the affected segment of the artery were successfully excised and replaced with an autogenous saphenous vein graft. In

Popliteal artery thrombosis secondary to exostosis of the tibia.

This report describes an exceptional case of popliteal artery thrombosis secondary to exostosis of the superior extremity of the superior tibia in a young adult. Correct diagnosis was made during re-operation for recurrent thrombosis. Surgical treatment consisted of resection of the bony tumor and venous bypass to reestablish arterial continuity. Femoropopliteal vascular complications of exostosis are rare, with most cases involving arterial aneurysms or false aneurysms. Differential diagnosis in our young patient took into account the other causes of popliteal thrombosis: entrapped popliteal

Evidence to support that adventitial cysts, analogous to intraneural ganglion cysts, are also joint-connected.

Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) is a rare condition in which cyst is found within a vessel, typically producing symptoms of vascular compromise. Most commonly located in the popliteal artery near the knee, it has been reported in arteries and veins throughout the body. Its pathogenesis has been poorly understood and various surgical approaches have been recommended. We extrapolated some recent information about a similar condition, intraneural ganglion cyst affecting the deep fibular (peroneal) nerve, to the prototype, CAD of the popliteal artery. In intraneural ganglion cysts affecting the d

[Vascular complications of Baker's cyst].

The presence of Baker's cyst is clinically demonstrated as compression syndrome of the vessels and nervous stem in the popliteal area. This result frequent in deep venous thrombosis, nervous injuries and blood flow insufficiency distal to the compression site. We present two cases of compression stenosis of the popliteal vessels, clinically manifested. The patients underwent surgical decompression and cystic removal, thus leading to arterial perfusion and/or venous derivation improvement of the lower extremity.

[A construction worker with acute knee pain].

BACKGROUND: Out of all peripheral arterial aneurysms, 70% are located in the popliteal artery; less than 4% of these rupture. Ruptured popliteal aneurysms may be mistaken for deep venous thrombosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From March until June 2001 three patients were primarily admitted with a diagnosis of venous thrombosis. This delayed the appropriate treatment of a ruptured popliteal aneurysm considerably. Two patients were first anticoagulated with warfarin before being transferred to the surgical ward. All the patients were operated on with the exclusion of the popliteal aneurysm and a fe

Magnetic resonance appearance of tuberculosis of the knee joint with ruptured Baker's cyst.

After the spine, the knee joint is the most commonly affected joint in skeletal tuberculosis. Baker's cyst is a rather rare complication of knee joint tuberculosis. The plain radiographic appearance of the tuberculous knee joint has been amply described. We present the magnetic resonance appearance of a tuberculous knee joint associated with a ruptured popliteal cyst.

Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome in Athletes.

In brief When a young person presents with typical symptoms of claudication that are relieved with rest, physicians should consider a vascular abnormality in the popliteal fossa. The popliteal artery may become entrapped because a cyst or fibrous band compresses the artery or because the artery deviates from its normal course. This article describes the diagnosis and treatment of popliteal artery entrapment syndrome and discusses two case reports. Arteriography is needed to establish the definitive diagnosis. Surgery relieving the entrapment is indicated to alleviate symptoms and to prevent po

[Cystic disease of right popliteal artery with spontaneous resolution].

The case was 50-year-old man. He was admitted to our hospital suffering from intermittent claudication. DSA and CT showed stenosis of the right popliteal artery due to compression by the tumor like lesion. The adventitial cystic disease was suggested. Three weeks later he had no symptom. DSA and CT revealed no reappearance of the adventitial cystic disease. The popliteal adventitial cyst spontaneously decreased in size. It is a very rare case.

Adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery.

Adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery is an unusual condition of uncertain etiology in which a mucin-containing cyst forms in the wall of the popliteal artery and causes symptoms of intermittent claudication, typically in young adults whose arteries are otherwise normal. Arteriography characteristically shows a smooth-walled, curvilinear narrowing. In the case described, a combination of findings from arteriography, computed tomography, and ultrasound resulted in a highly specific preoperative diagnosis.

Real-time ultrasound diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis: a comparison with venography.

A prospective study comparing real-time ultrasound scanning with contrast venography in the diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis of the lower limb was performed in a group of 46 patients. The sensitivity of ultrasound scanning for thrombus within the iliofemoral segment, femoral vein, and popliteal vein was 94% with a specificity of 100%. Additional information obtained by ultrasound included the diagnosis of popliteal cysts, pelvic and inguinal lymphadenopathy, popliteal haematoma, and traumatic arterial aneurysm. Real-time ultrasound scanning is a rapid and non-invasive alternative to contras…

Cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery--a case of young boy.

Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) of the popliteal artery (PA) is rare but one of the well-recognized causes of intermittent claudication. Now more than 200 case reports are available in the world, but there are only 6 cases younger than 15 years old. In this paper, we report a case of 14-year-old boy with CAD of the PA found by intermittent claudication. On examination, the pulses were not palpable below the right popliteal artery, and the angiography demonstrated about 1.5 cm-long obstruction of the right PA. We operated a resection of a cyst with artery, and replaced the autovein graft (V. s
