Brucellosis Seroprevalence in Humans and Risk Factors Among High-Risk Groups at Two Urban Populations in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a zoonotic bacterial disease that can affect humans and animals. It is often transmitted to humans through the consumption of contaminated animal products or by direct contact with infected animals. In Kenya, data on human and animal brucellosis are limited. METHODS: To investigate the seroprevalence and molecular prevalence of human brucellosis in Kenya, we randomly selected from the healthy participants with possible exposure to animals and animal products and randomly selected 348 out of 2,779 human blood samples, that were obtained from a larger longitudinal coh

Population-based disease-group analysis of Spanish excess mortality in the early COVID-19 pandemic period.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Increased mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic is not explained exclusively by COVID-19 infection and its complications. We analysed non-COVID-19 causes of mortality in a population analysis based on data from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics. METHODS: Using monthly mortality data in Spain (January 2010-December 2020), we analysed deaths associated with cancer, blood, endocrine, mental, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive diseases and explored the COVID-19 impact using a difference-in-difference strategy. We calculated monthly interannual varia

Sociocultural barriers to hepatitis B health literacy in an immigrant population: a focus group study in Korean Americans.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a major global health issue disproportionately affecting Asian Americans and other immigrant populations in the United States. Despite the high risk of morbid complications from CHB, the majority of individuals with CHB do not access healthcare due to a complex of barriers. These barriers influence health literacy which may affect behaviors linked to hepatitis B care. We aimed to identify and evaluate various sociocultural factors and how they interact with health literacy to impact CHB care and health seeking in a Korean American population. METHODS:

Food Insecurity in the Food Allergic Population: A Work Group Report of the AAAAI Adverse Reactions to Foods Committee.

Food allergies affect 32 million Americans. Restricted diets due to food allergies can be difficult to maintain especially when the household is food insecure. Food insecurity is defined as the inability to acquire food for household members due to insufficient money or resources for food. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many people to face food insecurity for the first time with Latinx, Native American, and Black communities disproportionately affected. Because of the increase in food insecurity, this work group developed a survey regarding food insecurity screening. This survey was sent out

Psychosis in German prisoners: Comparison of the clinical appearance of psychotic disorder of an imprisoned population with a not detained community group.

Surveys confirm risk factors for the incarceration of patients with psychosis including homelessness and comorbidity. There is also agreement that severe psychosis can lead to violence. Data describing prisoners with psychosis in Germany are scarce. We aimed to compare patients with psychosis in a prison hospital and patients with psychosis in a community hospital. Demographic data were collected, as well as comorbidity in the form of substance dependence and a psychiatric assessment using the German version of the 18-item Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and the Positive and Negative Syn

Rehospitalization of Postpartum Depression and Psychosis After Electroconvulsive Therapy: A Population-Based Study With a Matched Control Group.

OBJECTIVES: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is used in some cases of postpartum depression (PPD) and postpartum psychosis (PPP). The risk of relapse for PPD and PPP after ECT is unknown. This study compared the relapse rate after ECT between women who had been treated for PPD and/or PPP and women who had been treated for depression and/or psychosis outside the postpartum period. METHODS: The Swedish National Quality Register for ECT and the Swedish National Patient Register were used to identify women with PPD and/or PPP who had been treated with ECT within 6 months after delivery. Improvement of postpartum depression and psychosis after electroconvulsive therapy: A population-based study with a matched comparison group.

INTRODUCTION: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is used to treat postpartum depression and psychosis based on clinical experience and small observational studies. AIMS: The primary aim was to test the hypothesis that the response rate to ECT for depression and psychosis is higher during the postpartum period than outside this period. The secondary aim was to identify predictors of a response to ECT during the postpartum period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cases with postpartum depression and/or psychosis received ECT within 6 months of delivery. A matched comparison group with depression and/or psy

Congenital abnormalities and hepatoblastoma: a report from the Children's Oncology Group (COG) and the Utah Population Database (UPDB).

Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS) and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) are known to predispose to hepatoblastoma (HB). A case-control study was conducted through the Children's Oncology Group (COG) to study the association of HB with isolated congenital abnormalities. Cases (N = 383) were diagnosed between 2000 and 2008. Controls (N = 387) were recruited from state birth registries, frequency matched for sex, region, year of birth, and birth weight. Data on congenital abnormalities among subjects and covariates were obtained by maternal telephone interview. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confide

Characteristics of group B Streptococcus isolated from infants with invasive infections: a population-based study in Japan.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is one of the leading causes of neonatal bacterial infections. Population-based surveillance of GBS-related invasive diseases among newborns and infants from 10 prefectures in Japan was performed between 2007 and 2012. The characteristics of cases and isolated GBS are described in this study. The incidence rate of GBS-related invasive diseases was 0.13 per 1,000 live births. Analysis of GBS samples obtained from 60 invasive cases showed that the most frequent serotypes were III (48.3%), Ia (30.0%), and Ib (10.0%). All isolates were susceptible to penicillin G, ampic

Population genetic structure of the Staphylococcus intermedius group: insights into agr diversification and the emergence of methicillin-resistant strains.

The population genetic structure of the animal pathogen Staphylococcus intermedius is poorly understood. We carried out a multilocus sequence phylogenetic analysis of isolates from broad host and geographic origins to investigate inter- and intraspecies diversity. We found that isolates phenotypically identified as S. intermedius are differentiated into three closely related species, S. intermedius, Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, and Staphylococcus delphini. S. pseudintermedius, not S. intermedius, is the common cause of canine pyoderma and occasionally causes zoonotic infections of humans.

Spectrum bias of a rapid antigen detection test for group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis in a pediatric population.

BACKGROUND: Rapid antigen detection testing (RADT) is often performed for diagnosis of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal (GABHS) pharyngitis among children. Among adults, the sensitivity of this test varies on the basis of disease severity (spectrum bias). A similar phenomenon may occur when this test is used in a pediatric population, which may affect the need for culture confirmation of all negative RADT results. OBJECTIVES: To assess the performance of a clinical scoring system and to determine whether RADT spectrum bias is present among children who are evaluated for GABHS pharyngitis.

Treatment of duodenal ulcer with omeprazole or ranitidine in a Brazilian population: a multicenter double-blind, parallel group study.

Two hundred and forty-one patients with at least one ulcer at stage A1 or A2, measuring at least 5 mm in its larger diameter, were included in this Brazilian double-blind randomized study. Patients received omeprazole 20 mg in the morning (n = 120) or ranitidine 300 mg at night (n = 121) for 2 wk; unhealed ulcers were treated for an additional 2 wk. At the end of 4 wk, unhealed ulcers were treated openly with omeprazole 20 mg o.m. for 4 wk. Healing rates at 2 and 4 wk were 67.3% and 92.9% for omeprazole and 39.8% and 82.0% for ranitidine (per protocol analysis). Results were similar when analy

[Risk for Down syndrome based on maternal ages grouped in intervals of 2 and 5 years in the Mexican population].

Based on the analysis of 515 patients with Down's syndrome, identified in the Mexican program of Registry and Epidemiological Surveillance of External Congenital Malformations, we obtained the risk at birth for this disease, according to the mother's age, grouped in two and five years intervals. The results confirms other studies suggesting that the risk increases after age 30 and particularly 35. For example the incidence in women 21-22 years old is 0.62 per 1000 births and 40.7 in mothers ages 43-44. The data presented can be utilized for genetic counselling in Mexico and we recommend the us
