BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM), a disorder characterized by diffuse pain, fatigue, and a variety of other symptoms, is thought to derive from dysfunction of the central nervous system. Neuromodulation is a technique to treat pain from a variety of causes, including disorders of the central nervous system (CNS). Occipital nerve stimulation is a neuromodulation technique currently under study to treat various migraine headache disorders. This study examines a technique of neurostimulation that appears to affect the pain and symptoms of FM.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of a new technique of

The most prevalent disease course of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Fingolimod (Gilenya®) was the first oral disease-modifying therapy to RRMS. Patients affected by MS require long-term treatment, making the ongoing evaluation of the safety profile of fingolimod imperative. The aim of this study was to analyze the post-marketing pharmacovigilance data of fingolimod in Europe. Data of 12-year period (1 January 2011-19 June 2023) were obtained from EudraVigilance, and a descriptive analysis using drug-reaction pairs was performed. A total of 22,957 repo

Complex genetic and physiological variations as well as environmental factors that drive emergence of chromosomal instability, development of unscheduled cell death, skewed differentiation, and altered metabolism are central to the pathogenesis of human diseases and disorders. Understanding the molecular bases for these processes is important for the development of new diagnostic biomarkers, and for identifying new therapeutic targets. In 1973, a group of non-histone nuclear proteins with high electrophoretic mobility was discovered and termed high-mobility group (HMG) proteins. The HMG protei

It is imperative to acknowledge the potential impact of various environmental factors on the development of developmental disorders. Among these factors, the maternal immune response induced by the onset of infectious diseases during pregnancy emerges as a notable consideration. The study elucidates the behavioral and morphological abnormalities of the cerebral cortex caused by maternal immune response during pregnancy, emphasizing the significance of maternal immunity in this context. To this end, a mouse model of prenatal infection was established, inducing a congenital immune response analo

The pericardium could be involved in a variety of clinical disorders. The imaging findings are not specific for an individual pathology in most of the cases; however, patient's clinical history may guide radiologist to a definitive diagnosis. Congenital absence of the pericardium could be recognized with the imaging appearance of interposed lung tissue between the main pulmonary artery and aorta. Pericardial effusion is a non-specific condition that may occur due to inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic disorders. Cardiac tamponade may occur in case of massive or rapid accumulation of fluid

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) represents one of the most prevalent inherited renal disorders and constitutes the fourth leading etiology of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). While renal transplantation remains the optimal therapeutic intervention for ESKD, existing evidence regarding post-transplant survival rates and graft loss in PKD recipients remains contentious. This systematic review incorporated studies from PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases, with a preregistered protocol on PROSPERO (CRD420251002570). We evaluated the impact of PKD on post-transplant outcomes through comparative an

INTRODUCTION: Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) encompasses a range of physical, cognitive, and mental impairments frequently observed in individuals who have undergone intensive care unit treatment. This study aimed to investigate the potential of curcumin (CuC) in mitigating anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors associated with sepsis-induced PICS in mice.
METHODS: To establish a PICS model, male C57/B6 mice were subjected to sublethal cecal slurry (CS) injection to induce sepsis. The mice were orally administered CuC at doses of 10, 25, and 50 mg/kg, respectively, or fluoxetine at a dos

Prion diseases share common features of neurodegenerative disorders, infectious diseases and pathologies linked to misfolded proteins. Whether these aspects are independently and fortuitously present in prion diseases or are somewhat linked together remains unsettled, but the contribution of genomic, proteomic, metabolomic and spectroscopic techniques might give insights into this puzzle, and likely give hope for therapy to patients. Although the prion protein gene (PRNP) governs most of the clinical and pathological features of prion diseases and plays a pivotal role in determining host susce

Quantitative determination of alpha interferon (IFN) is used as an early marker in viral encephalitis. IFN is detected during 10 days following the onset of clinical symptoms. In 26 patients (11 children from 1 day to 6 year old and 15 adults from 17 to 70 year old) with central nervous system disorders (15 meningo-encephalitis, 5 meningitis, 1 myelitis, 1 polyradiculoneuritis, 1 dementia, 1 epilepsy and 2 other), alpha IFN is quantified using a cytopathic effect inhibition assay of VSV on MDBK cells. The mean value of alpha IFN is 80 UI/ml (range from 0 to 512 UI/ml). Virus involved are herpe

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the main oncogenic lymphotropic agent of the Herpesviridae family and is globally distributed. EBV acute infection occurs in young adults producing infectious mononucleosis. Detection of anti-viral capside antigen (VCA) antibodies indicates previous or present EBV infection. Moreover, high titles of anti-VCA antibodies are observed in EBV-associated neoplasic disorders, such as lymphomas in AIDS patients. The objective of this study was the development and optimization of P3HR1 cell slides for the EBV serologic detection by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) assay. P

Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis (BBE) is a rare, post-infectious autoimmune disorder characterized by ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and altered consciousness. It shares overlapping features with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS), and diagnosis is often clinical, supported by anti-GQ1b antibodies. A 40-year-old previously healthy male presented with dizziness, diplopia, gait instability, and a recent viral prodrome. Neurologic examination revealed bilateral sixth cranial nerve (CN VI) palsy, partial involvement of the third cranial nerve (CN III), and bilateral dysmet

Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is a life-threatening neurologic disorder resulting from thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency that can be secondary to chronic alcohol abuse, gastrointestinal surgery, systemic infectious and non-infectious diseases, and chemotherapy. WE is classically characterized on MRI by reduced diffusion and T2 prolongation along the mammillothalamic tracts, periaqueductal gray and tectal plate. We present two patients with acute WE who had baseline arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion at the time of presentation, demonstrating increase in cerebral blood flow (CBF) within the

Leishmaniases are a group of neglected vector-borne infectious diseases that are among the six priority endemic diseases worldwide. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is the most severe clinical manifestation, characterized by systemic and chronic visceral involvement and high mortality in immunosuppressed and untreated patients. VL can be complicated into post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL), and when dermatologic disorders occur simultaneously with active VL, an intermediate clinical form called para-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (para-KDL) occurs. This clinical form is of great epidemiologi

Autoimmune encephalitides are autoimmune neurological disorders characterized by rapidly progressive central nervous system symptoms associated with specific auto-antibodies targeting neuronal cell-surface proteins. The clinical features of encephalitis are frequently preceded by symptoms suggesting an infectious process, and specific pathogens have been detected at the early phase of the disease in some patients, suggesting that it can be triggered by infections. Moreover, recent data have shown an association with specific HLA haplotypes, suggesting a genetic susceptibility to develop at lea

Central nervous system vasculitides are defined as the invasion of the vascular wall by blood-borne inflammatory cells. In childhood, they may be classified according to their trigger event (infectious vs. non-infectious), their temporal course (time-limited vs. chronic), and the size of the affected vessel. Diseases apparently confined to the central nervous system are also distinguished from secondary forms, associated with infection or rheumatic or systemic inflammatory disorders. Large-vessel vasculitis, the most frequent form, causes stroke and presents with acute focal deficits. MR, or m

Purpura fulminans (PF) is a disorder with multifactorial causes that lead to acute localize skin microvasculature thrombosis. PF can be classified as one of the manifestations of disseminated vascular coagulation (DIC). Although, there are three types of PF including hereditary (autosomal dominant) due to mutations in single nucleotide polymorphisms (PROC and PROS1) and serpin family C member 1 (SERPINC1) genes. Idiopathic or acquired type of PF is complex and the pathophysiology is ambiguous, however, low levels of protein C and S were observed. The acute infectious form of PF occurs post-bac

Cesarean section is among the most frequently performed surgical procedures worldwide. In recent years, the increasing rate of cesarean deliveries has led to an increased incidence of post-operative complications. The present case report describes a rare case of a post-operative pelvic abscess located at the uterine scar following a cesarean section, managed successfully via laparotomy. The patient, a 17-year-old woman, was admitted 1 week after undergoing a cesarean delivery. She presented with abdominal pain, fever and chills. Blood tests revealed elevated inflammatory markers and a mild coa
