Improvement in Quality of Life with OnabotulinumtoxinA for Cervical Dystonia: POSTURe.

INTRODUCTION: Symptoms of cervical dystonia (CD) can vary in severity and cause significant pain. OnabotulinumtoxinA is an approved treatment for CD. This study assessed health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with CD who received multiple onabotulinumtoxinA treatments. METHODS: This prospective, observational standard-of-care study was conducted at multiple neurology centers in Québec, Canada. Patients reported the health impact of CD using the Cervical Dystonia Impact Profile (CDIP)-58, before and after up to eight onabotulinumtoxinA treatments. Other measures included the Cervic

The assessment of resting tongue posture in different sagittal skeletal patterns.

INTRODUCTION: Resting tongue posture affects the surrounding structures and, theoretically, may result in altered arch form and jaw relationship. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to investigate the association between resting tongue posture as observed in lateral cephalometric radiograph, sagittal jaw relationship and arch form. METHODS: The study was conducted on pretreatment lateral cephalograms and dental casts of 90 subjects. Subjects were equally divided into three groups, based on sagittal jaw relationship (Class I, II and III). Tongue posture was determined in terms o…

Interactions between eye movements and posture in children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

In everyday life, our activities frequently involve the simultaneous performance of two or more tasks. Sharing attention between two concurrent tasks may result in a decrease in performance specifically among children with neurodevelopmental disorders. The objective of the study was to determine whether the influence of postural conditions (sitting condition, single task; standing condition, dual task) on eye movement performances on three visual tasks with high attentional load (visually-guided saccade task, memory-guided saccade task and fixation task) was different in children with neurodev

Whole-Body Vibration and Trunk Posture During Operation of Agricultural Machinery.

Exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) is common among agricultural workers and is associated with musculoskeletal health outcomes such as low back pain. Little is known, however, about the characteristics of exposure experienced during actual production practices. We measured WBV levels during agricultural machinery use among a sample of farmers (n = 55) performing routine agricultural activities and explored machinery attributes that may explain WBV summary measures. We also measured trunk posture to provide additional information about physical exposures during machinery operation. Measurem…

Effects of chin-up posture on the sequence of swallowing events.

BACKGROUND: Chin-up posture is frequently used to manage oral dysphagia after head and neck cancer. This prospective study investigates the effects of chin-ups on the sequence of pharyngeal swallowing events. METHODS: Twelve healthy young adults performed 45 consecutive swallows of 5 mL water across 3 phases on videofluoroscopy: 5 swallows in the neutral head position; 30 swallows during chin-up posture; and 10 swallows in the neutral head position. Swallowing kinematic and bolus flow measures for 9 swallowing events were recorded. Linear trends were analyzed across 30 chin-up swallows; pairw…

Gold in the balance: How does patient posture affect eyelid closure?

A retrospective audit was conducted of four patients with upper eyelid gold weights (inserted >5 years ago) as treatment for facial nerve palsy-related lagophthalmos. Each patient was presently examined for lagophthalmos ("opened" or "closed") at three different patient inclinations (lying flat at 0º, lying back at 45º, and sitting upright at 90º). In all four cases at 0º inclination, the upper eyelid remained "open" with significant lagophthalmos, and therefore the ocular surface was vulnerable. At other inclinations, 45º and 90º, the eyes were substantially "closed" and the ocular surface wa

Embodied prosthetic arm stabilizes body posture, while unembodied one perturbs it.

Senses of ownership (this arm belongs to me) and agency (I am controlling this arm) originate from sensorimotor system. External objects can be integrated into the sensorimotor system following long-term use, and recognized as one's own body. We examined how an (un)embodied prosthetic arm modulates whole-body control, and assessed the components of prosthetic embodiment. Nine unilateral upper-limb amputees participated. Four frequently used their prosthetic arm, while the others rarely did. Their postural sway was measured during quiet standing with or without their prosthesis. The frequent us

Foot disorders, foot posture, and foot function: the Framingham foot study.

INTRODUCTION: Foot disorders are common among older adults and may lead to outcomes such as falls and functional limitation. However, the associations of foot posture and foot function to specific foot disorders at the population level remain poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to assess the relation between specific foot disorders, foot posture, and foot function. METHODS: Participants were from the population-based Framingham Foot Study. Quintiles of the modified arch index and center of pressure excursion index from plantar pressure scans were used to create foot posture and f…

Neuromuscular control of fundamental frequency and glottal posture at phonation onset.

The laryngeal neuromuscular mechanisms for modulating glottal posture and fundamental frequency are of interest in understanding normal laryngeal physiology and treating vocal pathology. The intrinsic laryngeal muscles in an in vivo canine model were electrically activated in a graded fashion to investigate their effects on onset frequency, phonation onset pressure, vocal fold strain, and glottal distance at the vocal processes. Muscle activation plots for these laryngeal parameters were evaluated for the interaction of following pairs of muscle activation conditions: (1) cricothyroid (CT) ver…

Intermittent, posture-dependent, and late endoleaks after endovascular aortic aneurysm repair.

In this article we present our experience with the concept of the unstable aortic sac after endovascular aortic aneurysm repair. The improvements in ultrasound technology and features suggestive of sac instability are described. Patients with this condition are usually considered to have endotension, in which the aortic sac undergoes progressive enlargement in the absence of any demonstrable endoleak. We have found, however that approximately one third of these patients have intermittent or posture-dependent endoleaks. The secondary ultrasound manoeuvres that enable these endoleaks to be diagn…

Squatting, a posture test for studying cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy in diabetes.

Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is a frequent complication of diabetes mellitus, which is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. It involves both the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems, and may be diagnosed by classical dynamic tests with measurements of heart rate (HR) and/or arterial blood pressure (BP). An original squat test (1-min standing, 1-min squatting, 1-min standing) was used with continuous monitoring of HR and BP, using a Finapres(®) device. This active test imposes greater postural stress than the passive head-up tilt test, and provokes large ch

Wrist and carpal tunnel size and shape measurements: effects of posture.

BACKGROUND: Wrist anthropometrics and posture have been implicated in the development of carpal tunnel syndrome, yet it remains unclear how external measurements relate to carpal tunnel parameters in neutral and non-neutral postures. The purposes of this study were (i) to evaluate the effect of slice orientation on several indices of carpal tunnel size and shape and (ii) to examine the relationship between carpal tunnel and external wrist dimensions. METHODS: Three-dimensional static models were generated to measure carpal tunnel and wrist parameters for six wrists in three wrist postures (30…
