Improving outcomes of patients with advanced prostate cancer through a better understanding of clinical factors contributing to financial toxicity: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Patients with advanced prostate cancer (aPC) often face significant treatment-related financial hardship. Given the critical role non-physician clinicians play in helping patients access prescribed treatments, we sought to explore their perspectives on factors contributing to treatment-related financial toxicity. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with non-physician clinicians who care for patients with aPC. We used purposive sampling to capture diverse perspectives across practice types (academic, community), and settings (rural, urban, suburban). Participants describe

Empowering Women Living With HIV Through Partner-Based Interventions: A Scoping Review.

Spouses and partners play a crucial role in the well-being of women living with HIV (WLWH), especially in family-oriented cultures. This scoping review examined partner-inclusive interventions to strengthen support systems for WLWH. We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for peer-reviewed studies from 2004 to 2024. Of 1,375 records screened, six randomized trials conducted in the U.S., China, Ethiopia, and sub-Saharan Africa met the inclusion criteria. Four involved WLWH-partner dyads, two included other family members. Interventions varied in format and were facilitated by healt

Who's in control? Situating expertise, (mis)trust, and power among the Latine/Hispanic community in COVID-19's liminal moments.

BACKGROUND: Research has established the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Black, Indigenous, and People of color (BIPOC) communities, and the barriers to vaccine trust and access among these populations. Focusing on perceptions of safety, access, and trustworthiness, studies often attach barriers to community-members, and discuss vaccines as if developed from an objective perspective, or "view from nowhere" (Haraway). OBJECTIVE: We sought to follow Haraway's concept of "situated knowledges," whereby no one truth exists, and information is understood within its context, to understand the

Living well with kidney disease by patient and care-partner empowerment: Kidney health for everyone everywhere.

Living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with hardships for patients and their care-partners. Empowering patients and their care-partners, including family members or friends involved in their care, may help minimize the burden and consequences of CKD related symptoms to enable life participation. There is a need to broaden the focus on living well with kidney disease and re-engagement in life, including an emphasis on patients being in control. The World Kidney Day (WKD) Joint Steering Committee has declared 2021 the year of "Living Well with Kidney Disease" in an effort to incr

The influence of power posing on cardiac vagal activity.

The effects of power posing on hormonal reactions such as testosterone and cortisol have been widely investigated, however, its effects on the autonomic nervous system are rather unknown. Consequently, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of power posing on cardiac vagal activity (CVA), as indexed by heart rate variability. It was hypothesized that high power poses (HPP) would increase CVA, whereas low power poses (LPP) would decrease CVA, given power posing is expected to decrease stress. Participants (N = 56) performed a total of four power poses, a combination of two power

[Abuse in healthcare - lessons learned during two decades of research].

Patients' experience of abuse in health care (AHC) is common, and may cause long-lasting suffering. In Sweden, lifetime prevalence is estimated at 20 per cent among female patients and 8 per cent among male patients, and a background of other abuse is a risk factor. Most health care staff have experience of patients who have been abused, but the topic is surrounded by silence from both patients and caregivers. Models for training staff in groups have been evaluated and a more proactive stance can be fostered. Department heads and health care authorities are responsible for providing staff with

'Dented' and 'resuscitated' masculinities: the impact of HIV diagnosis and/or enrolment on antiretroviral treatment on masculine identities in rural eastern Uganda.

There is limited research on the impact of HIV or its treatment on men's identity construction and gender roles in sub-Saharan Africa. Based on in-depth research with 26 men in rural Uganda, this article discusses men's vulnerabilities and shifting gender relations and sense of masculinity resulting from HIV infection or enrolment on treatment in eastern Uganda. The findings suggest two broad categories of masculinity: respectable and reputational. HIV infection and illness dented masculinity as men lost authority within the domestic sphere. A weakened provider role and over-reliance on wives

Sequins, sass, and sisterhood: an exploration of older women's belly dancing.

Disempowering stereotypes plague public perceptions of older women's bodies, particularly within Western contemporary societies. Consequently, as women age, their bodies often become sources of shame, discomfort, and ridicule. Belly dance, as a form of recreative leisure, provides a unique and somewhat unexpected space for women to subvert such perceptions. Based on qualitative interviews with older American women who belly dance, this article examines the ways in which this form of recreation provides participants a means of (re)gaining mobility, (re)claiming social space, (re)building social

Development of the scale of economic abuse.

Economic abuse is part of the pattern of behaviors used by batterers to maintain power and control over their partners. However, no measure of economic abuse exists. This study describes the development of the Scale of Economic Abuse, which was designed to fill this gap. Interviews were conducted with 103 survivors of domestic abuse, each of whom responded to measures of economic, physical, and psychological abuse as well as economic hardship. Results provide evidence for the reliability and validity of the scale. This study is an important first step toward understanding the extent and impact

Punking and bullying: strategies in middle school, high school, and beyond.

Punking is a practice of verbal and physical violence, humiliation, and shaming usually done in public by males to other males. This definition is based on interviews and discussion groups with 32 adolescent boys and on media sources within which adolescent males are embedded. Discourse analysis findings reveal that punking terminology and behaviors are usually interchangeable with bullying terminology and behaviors. Both practices are purposeful strategies taken up and used by many boys to affirm masculinity norms of toughness, strength, dominance, and control. Implications from this research

A pilot study of gender of voice and gender of voice hearer in psychotic voice hearers.

The experience of auditory hallucinations has been described as a form of 'inner relationship'. Recent research has focused on the common dominant/subordinate form that voice and voice hearer can share, with voices being experienced as dominant, powerful and shaming. However, the way men shame and derogate men, and women shame and derogate women may differ in everyday social contexts. This difference may also be important in the relationship of voice hearers to their voices. This study used a semi-structured interview to explore male voices heard by men and by women and female voices heard by

What schools can do to help gay/lesbian/bisexual youth: a harm.

In recognition of the fact that heterosexism is one of the most significant realities of adolescents' day-to-day experiences in school, this paper examines the school environment in terms of disempowering and empowering aspects. It is argued that failure to take a proactive stance to help youth with gender identity issues is a major cause of psychological problems, leading in some cases to suicide, alcohol and other drug abuse, and homelessness.

[Nursing--construction of a model based on the medical discourse].

The purpose is to trace a parallel between the medical discourse contents and the expected and stereotyped nurses behavior at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is a historic-social approach in which was made use of speeches uttered by nurses and physicians at nursing and medicine schools. The analysis of physicians discourse compared to nurses discourse disclose the formation of a mentality shaped and turned docile by the medical power which wanted them holy and servile.

Brain activity characteristics of RGB stimulus: an EEG study.

The perception of color is a fundamental cognitive feature of our psychological experience, with an essential role in many aspects of human behavior. Several studies used magnetoencephalography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and electroencephalography (EEG) approaches to investigate color perception. Their methods includes the event-related potential and spectral power activity of different color spaces, such as Derrington-Krauskopf-Lennie and red-green-blue (RGB), in addition to exploring the psychological and emotional effects of colors. However, we found insufficient studies in RGB

Study protocol of a pilot randomised controlled trial examining massed culturally adapted Problem Management Plus (PM +) in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Problem Management Plus (PM +) is a low-intensity psychological intervention developed by the World Health Organization to reduce psychological distress, particularly in settings with limited access to mental health care. To date, PM + has not been culturally adapted for the Xhosa community in South Africa, nor has it been evaluated in a massed format (five daily sessions delivered within 1 week). This study aims to culturally adapt PM + for the Xhosa context and to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a massed delivery format. METHODS: The study will be conducted in three

Demographic, psychological, behavioral, and cognitive correlates of BMI in youth: Findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has implicated demographic, psychological, behavioral, and cognitive variables in the onset and maintenance of pediatric overweight/obesity. No adequately-powered study has simultaneously modeled these variables to assess their relative associations with body mass index (BMI; kg/m2) in a nationally representative sample of youth. METHODS: Multiple machine learning regression approaches were employed to estimate the relative importance of 43 demographic, psychological, behavioral, and cognitive variables previously associated with BMI in youth to elucidate the ass

Inpatient rehabilitation for adult patients with Marfan syndrome: an observational pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Advances in medical, interventional and surgical treatment have increased average life expectancy of patients with congenital heart defects. As a result a new group of adult patients with congenital cardiac defects requires medical rehabilitation. Patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) are a relevant group among these patients. So far, no reports on the effectiveness of specialized rehabilitation programmes for MFS patients exist. We implemented an inpatient 3-week rehabilitation program for MFS patients at the Muehlenberg-Clinic for rehabilitation and assessed the medical safety as w
