Respectful maternity care and mistreatment: Women's experiences during induction of labor and childbirth in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on respectful maternity care (RMC) and mistreatment of women have focused on intrapartum care with limited information on how women are treated during induction of labor (IOL), pre-labor phase of the maternity care continuum. Emerging multi-country evidence indicates that nearly 30% of women who undergo IOL do not consent to the procedure and constitutes a violation of their rights to optimal maternal health. This study explored women's lived experiences of respectful care and mistreatment during IOL in a tertiary setting in Ghana. METHODS: This was a qualitative phen

Examining the Social and Mental Health Benefits of Virtual and In-Person Physical Activity Intervention Among Postsecondary Students: Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) is a promising prevention approach for supporting mental health and enhancing social inclusion among postsecondary students. However, it is unclear whether similar outcomes are realized when PA programming is delivered in-person versus virtually. OBJECTIVE: Using data from a multiphase research project, the purpose of the study was to examine the influence of on-campus PA programming (virtual and in-person delivery) on mental ill health symptoms (ie, anxiety and depression), social inclusion indices (ie, social connectedness, emotional ties, and social relat

Characterisation of a clinical trial-like population of high cardiovascular risk patients prior to myocardial infarction or stroke in the real world: design and protocol for a multidatabase retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular (CV) disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is an important modifiable risk factor of major adverse cardiovascular events. Patients without prior myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke but with established risk factors and elevated LDL-C may benefit from intensive lipid-lowering therapy (LLT); however, the size and potential healthcare burden of this population globally are not known. The benefits of evolocumab, a proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitor, in these patients, are curr

An intravaginal ring for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis: assessment of safety and pharmacokinetics in a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: In Eastern and Southern Africa, 63% of new HIV infections occurred in women and girls, with adolescent girls and young women representing a particularly vulnerable subpopulation. Effective vaginal products for HIV prevention are desirable because they are underrepresented in the currently approved portfolio and have attributes motivating product use. In this trial, we evaluated an innovative intravaginal ring (pod-IVR) as a platform for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). OBJECTIVE: To measure the safety and multicompartment pharmacokinetics (PKs) of a pod-IVR delivering tenofo

From Consensus Through Prioritization: A Delphi Method, Clinical Audit, and Analytic Hierarchy Process Framework for Quality Improvement in Primary Diabetes Care.

BackgroundType 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) affects approximately 17% of adults in Qatar, making improved primary care management a national health priority. Despite established guidelines, significant gaps persist between recommended care and real-world practice, particularly in preventive and patient-centered services. To address this, a structured, data-driven quality improvement (QI) framework was implemented.MethodsWe conducted a mixed-methods, pre-implementation QI study across 31 primary health care facilities in Qatar. The three-phase approach included: (1) a Delphi consensus with 65 pri

HIV remission trial investigators' attitudes towards risk and risk mitigation in trials that include treatment interruption.

Early-phase HIV remission ("cure") trials aim to test interventions developed to eradicate HIV or to sustainably control HIV without antiretroviral treatment (ART). Many remission trials include analytic treatment interruption (ATI) to evaluate interventions, which increases the risk to participants and their sexual partners. We conducted an online questionnaire of international HIV remission trial investigators and other study team members to assess their expectations regarding the time to achieve long-term control of HIV replication without treatment (functional cure) or complete eradication

Empirically constrained order parameter dynamics in cardiovascular criticality: a synergetic Langevin framework for arrhythmic transitions with cross-cohort parameter estimation and Kramers escape-time validation.

BACKGROUND: This companion empirical study established fundamental heterogeneity in pre-arrhythmic dynamical pathways across nine PhysioNet cohorts (N > 1,500 records): 93%-98% of events do not follow the canonical suppress-to-late-rise trajectory, Phase V (scaling manifold collapse, R2 < 0.93) is absent in healthy subjects and increases monotonically with disease severity, and healthy dynamics are predominantly supercritical (CHI = 2 (α1 - α2) = +0.334). Although these empirical markers characterize the dynamical state, they lacked formal theoretical grounding. The present study addresses thi

Effects of Resisted-Sprint Training on Sprint Performance and Mechanics: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Focusing on Load Magnitude.

Resisted sprint training (RST) is effective for improving sprint acceleration. However, the choice of RST loads-ranging from light (≤ 10% of unresisted sprint maximum velocity decrement [vdec], < 20% of body mass [BM]) to very heavy (≥ 50% vdec or ≥ 80% BM) -remains debated. To (i) explore the effects of different RST loads and unresisted sprint training (UST) on sprint performance and macroscopic mechanical outputs (e.g., theoretical maximal horizontal force [F0], power [Pmax], maximal ratio of horizontal-to-resultant force [RFmax]), and (ii) investigate how participant characteristics and tr

Varenicline for the management of cannabis use disorder: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis use disorder (CUD) is one of the highest prevalence mental health conditions globally. Psychosocial treatments for CUD have modest efficacy. There are currently no approved adjunctive pharmacological approaches for CUD. Varenicline, a nicotinic receptor partial agonist approved for use in smoking cessation, has shown promise as a treatment for CUD. This study aims to synthesise the literature on the efficacy of varenicline in treating CUD. A secondary aim is to examine the tolerability of varenicline and its effect on concurrent tobacco use within CUD treatment. METHODS

[Simultaneous determination of vitamins K1 and K2 in cosmetics by QuEChERS-high performance liquid chromatography and verification by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry].

Vitamins K1 and K2 are both essential fat-soluble vitamins for the human body. K1 was once used in cosmetics for its efficacy in improving dark circles by promoting periorbital circulation. However, due to its potential to cause severe allergic reactions, it is now banned in cosmetics in China and the European Union. K2, particularly the MK-7 form, has a similar structure to K1 but features a different side chain. It has gained attention for its skin benefits, including soothing, antioxidant, and anti-aging properties. Although there are no reports of its use in cosmetics in China yet, it has

Can Self-reported Ocular Motor and Perceptive Alterations Predict a Reading Disability? A Pilot Study on the Analytic Anamnestic Protocol.

Introduction Early diagnosis is the main requisite when dealing with subjects suspected to suffer from neurodevelopmental disorders, especially reading disability. In this respect, self-reports are a promising tool and could prove to be as reliable as ordinary screenings, with the advantage of low cost and low time consumption. Since the last decades, the perceptual and visuomotor function are believed to be involved in the pathogenesis of developmental dyslexia; therefore, specific elements related to an alteration of the sensorial and visuomotor domain in the familial and personal medical hi

Avoidable delays in the care of infective endocarditis patients: a priority issue.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend prompt diagnosis and timely surgical intervention for infective endocarditis (IE); however, adherence in clinical practice remains inconsistent. We quantified delays throughout the IE care pathway and evaluated their association with mortality after adjusting for baseline severity. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective single-centre cohort study of consecutive patients with definite IE and a guideline-based surgical indication who were admitted to Misericordia Hospital, Grosseto (Italy), between 1 January 1998 and 31 December 2023. Time intervals from the firs

Experiential Learning in Refugee Health: A Convergent Parallel Mixed-Methods Study of Medical Student Challenges and Educational Needs in a Student-Run Clinic.

BACKGROUND: Refugees face compounding health burdens and access barriers that require culturally responsive, linguistically adapted clinical care. Student-run refugee health clinics offer high-value training environments but are rarely studied as sites of structured experiential learning. Grounded in Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory (ELT), this study examined where the learning cycle breaks down for medical students in a community refugee clinic, with a focus on language barriers, cultural challenges, and resource limitations as the primary disruptions to effective learning and care. Longitudinal changes in the relative toxicity of FDA-approved oncology therapeutics: evidence from paired initial and updated RCT reports.

BACKGROUND: A growing share of oncology drugs receive FDA approval via expedited pathways based on interim RCT analyses, leaving safety data relatively immature at approval. Whether the relative toxicity of approved therapeutics shifts as trials mature remains unquantified. METHODS: Phase II-III RCTs underpinning FDA oncology approvals from 2006 to 2025 were eligible if both the approval-stage dataset and at least one subsequent publication reported grade ≥3 AEs or serious AEs (SAEs). For each trial, experimental-versus-control odds ratios (ORs) were computed at both timepoints, with within-t
