The missing link: prevention guidelines fail to include clear guidance for their implementation.

This paper aims to characterise implementation recommendations within current international prevention guidelines. An audit of prevention guidelines hosted on the Guidelines International Network library was conducted. Recommendations from implementation process models were used as a guide for data extraction of eligible guidelines. This included the presence or absence of strategies, such as assessing and addressing barriers to implementation, engaging end-users in the development and execution of implementation guidelines, and the inclusion of empirical research to support implementation rec

Use of Health Services in the Months Prior to Suicide in a Country With Low Suicide Rates and Public Universal Access to Healthcare.

AIM: The use of health services prior to suicide has been little studied in countries with low suicide rates and, on the other hand, little is known on the use of concrete medical specialties other than primary care or mental health services. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the use of different types of health services, the psychiatric diagnosis, and treatments received in the year prior to suicide in the region of Gipuzkoa (Spain), a country with low rates of suicide and public universal access to healthcare. METHODS: This is a retrospective descriptive study. We included all suicides registered by

Sex-Specific Differences in Risk Factors for Development of Heart Failure in Women.

Sex specific differences exist in the impact of risk factors for the development of heart failure (HF). Addressing these differences can have an impact on prevention of HF. This article reviews sex-specific risk factors associated with development of HF. These risk factors include current smoking, diabetes, hypertension, and myocardial infarction. Other risks for HF are toxins, inflammation, and other chronic conditions, such as sleep breathing disorders, anemia, obesity, and renal insufficiency. Some of these risks factors present risk reduction opportunities that may improve outcomes.

Dental hygiene care in the Commonwealth of Independent States.

PURPOSE: This study assessed the performance of dental hygiene services and the perception of preventive oral health care in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), formerly known as the USSR. METHODS: In April 1996, questionnaires were distributed to a convenience sample of 200 dentists in four cities of the CIS: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, and Odessa. All questions were designed for practicing dentists since the dental hygiene profession in the CIS is not presently recognized. RESULTS: The overall response rate was 93% (N = 186). The results indicated that oral hygiene care is prov

Exploring Preventive Healthcare in a High-Risk Vulnerable Population.

This study describes preventive care behaviors and explores opportunities to deliver preventive sexual healthcare to a high-risk vulnerable population. Data from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system high-risk heterosexuals (HET) cycle (2019) in Houston, Texas, was used to describe preventive care utilization and assess the relationship between healthcare utilization and sociodemographic characteristics. More than 47% reported having no usual source of healthcare, and 94.6% reported receiving no non-HIV STI testing in the past 12 months. Additionally, many sociodemographic fac

High Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Disease.

Fragmented investigation has masked the overall picture for causes of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Among the risk factors for CVD, high blood pressure (BP) is associated with the strongest evidence for causation and it has a high prevalence of exposure. Biologically, normal levels of BP are considerably lower than what has typically been characterized as normal in research and clinical practice. We propose that CVD is primarily caused by a right-sided shift in the population distribution of BP. Our view that BP is the predominant risk factor for CVD is based on conceptual postulates that have

[A social program for the control of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in M'Sila, Algeria].

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania major is a serious public health problem in Algeria. On average, 10,000 new cases are reported every year among the 15 million people at risk of infection. With an annual incidence of 561.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, M'Sila has seen the worst outbreak of the disease in Algeria since the historic outbreak in Biskra. The main reservoir of the disease is Psammomys obesus, a gerbil that feeds exclusively on Chenopodiaceae, a salt-tolerant plant under which it makes its burrow. Removing these plants around houses within a radius of 300 meters is one

Ten years after the United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS): assessing drug problems, policies and reform proposals.

In 1998 the United Nations General Assembly Special Session resolved that governments would reduce drug production and consumption greatly within 10 years. With that period now elapsed, there is an interest in reviewing how successful this was and considering how drug policy could be improved. The demand for drugs in the world has stabilized mainly as a result of the interaction of epidemic forces, culture and economic development. Supply has become more concentrated and the menu of drugs has changed surprisingly slowly. Drug policy is shifting to a more explicitly tolerant configuration in Eu

Chlamydia trachomatis infection in women: bad news, good news, and next steps in prevention.

Chlamydia trachomatis causes largely asymptomatic infections that can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain. Screening women routinely is critical to controlling the epidemic of this disease. Testing innovations now make diagnosis easier, and simple treatment regimens may improve compliance with medications and increase cure rates, but testing and treatment must be coupled with improved screening efforts and effective partner services. Ongoing research may point to other interventions that will increase our success in fighting chlamydial i

Pre-Pandemic and Recent Oral and Medical Health Care Utilization among Young American Indian Children and Their Caregivers.

Children from diverse ethnic groups are at significantly increased risk for dental caries. In particular, American Indian (AI) children have the highest incidence of detal caries of any ethnic group. The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically restricted health care access, including preventive oral health care. Given this context, it is unclear whether or not preventive oral health care for AI children has resumed since lockdown. To address this question, we surveyed adult AI caregivers (N = 152) of children aged 0-5 years, assessing recent (12-month) and pre-COVID (for caregivers of children aged 3-5

Integrating Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment With Emergency and Primary Care: the Case of Opioid Use Disorder and Suicide.

Policy Points There have been significant advancements in expanding care for opioid use disorder and suicide in general medical settings in the first quarter of the 21st century. Incessant barriers in the US health system continue to hinder progress in sufficiently scaling up evidence-based behavioral health interventions and getting them to those at highest risk. State policymakers have multiple levers available to make significant improvements to address ongoing challenges and improve access to evidence-based behavioral health services in emergency and primary care settings.

ACOG committee opinion, number 312, August 2005: healthcare for homeless women.

Homelessness is a considerable social and health problem in the United States with far-reaching effects on the health of homeless women. Homeless women are at higher risk for injury and illness and are less likely to obtain needed health care than women who are not homeless. It is critical to undertake efforts to prevent homelessness. Until this can be accomplished, community-based services targeted specifically to this population that provide both health care and support services are essential. Health care providers can help address the needs of the homeless by identifying their own patients
