A 5-year-old, male, neutered, Border Collie presented to a referral hospital with marked cervical hyperaesthesia, uncharacteristic aggression and progressive tetraparesis. The dog was diagnosed with chronic, dynamic atlantoaxial instability and incomplete ossification of the atlas using combined advanced cross-sectional imaging. Traditional surgical approaches rely on adequate bone stock from both the atlas and the axis to achieve robust fixation, which would have been challenging in this case. Descriptive surgical techniques are lacking for this presentation due to its rarity. The owner conse

The use of a filling block can improve the initial stability of the fixation plate in the open wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO), and promote bone healing. However, the biomechanical effects of filling block structures and materials on OWHTO remain unclear. OWHTO anatomical filling block model was designed and built. The finite element analysis method was adopted to study the influence of six filling block structure designs and four different materials on the stress of the fixed plate, tibia, screw, and filling block, and the micro-displacement at the wedge gap of the OWHTO fixation system.

OBJECTIVES: Many types of congenital heart disease are amenable to surgical repair or palliation. The procedures are often challenging and require specific surgical training, with limited real-life exposure and often costly simulation options. Our objective was to create realistic and affordable 3D simulation models of the heart and vessels to improve training.
METHODS: We created moulded vessel models using several materials, to identify the material that best replicated human vascular tissue. This material was then used to make more vessels to train residents in cannulation procedures. Magn

OBJECTIVE: A major obstacle in the clinical translation of engineered auricular scaffolds is the significant contraction and loss of topography that occur during maturation of the soft collagen-chondrocyte matrix into elastic cartilage. We hypothesized that 3-dimensional-printed, biocompatible scaffolds would "protect" maturing hydrogel constructs from contraction and loss of topography.
DESIGN: External disc-shaped and "ridged" scaffolds were designed and 3D-printed using polylactic acid (PLA). Acellular type I collagen constructs were cultured in vitro for up to 3 months. Collagen construct

Cerebral cavernous angiomas are vascular anomalies with dilated spaces. We report the case of rare double cavernous angiomas causing higher brain dysfunction. A 74-year-old man exhibited cognitive dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging showed two tumors with hemorrhage in the left frontal lobe. Preoperative diagnosis was hemorrhage caused by cavernous angiomas. A 3D model of the double cavernous angioma was made to confirm their association with cortical veins and tumors. Tumors were removed using a single small corticotomy. This is the first report of a rare double cavernous angioma and the

Three-dimensional printed (3DP) implant offers a valid option with perfect anatomic fitting in individual and skeletal reconstruction of the chest wall. Herein, we present the case of a patient with a large chest wall tumor, where an extensive chest wall defect was repaired using 3DP polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) implants. Surgical treatment planning was performed according to the computed tomography (CT) images in DICOM format. A 3DP implant was then design and fabricated. A wide excision of the chest wall tumor was performed, including the entire sternum, 2-6 costal cartilage and ribs, and p

Learning anatomy is commonly facilitated by use of cadavers, plastic models and more recently three-dimensional printed (3DP) anatomical models as they allow students to physically touch and hold the body segments. However, most existing models are limited to surface features of the specimen, with little opportunity to manipulate the structures. There is much interest in developing better 3DP models suitable for anatomy education. This study aims to determine the feasibility of developing a multi-material 3DP heart model, and to evaluate students' perceptions of the model. Semi-automated segme
