BACKGROUND: Incarcerated individuals face elevated risks for both physical and mental health issues. While structured physical activity programs have shown health benefits, little is known about how general patterns of physical activity and sedentary behavior, including screen-based media use, unfold in everyday prison life. This study aimed to identify distinct behavioral profiles among prisoners and explore whether these groups differ in psychological well-being indicators.
METHODS: A paper-pencil survey was conducted in a German open prison for young male offenders. Self-reported data were

BACKGROUND: Condom provision is one of the most effective harm reduction interventions to control sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis in prisons. Yet, very few countries around the world provide prisoners with condoms. The present study aimed to elucidate principles of effective prison-based condom programs from the perspective of European public health and prison health experts.
METHODS: As a part of the "Joint Action on HIV and Co-infection Prevention and Harm Reduction (HA-REACT)" twenty-one experts from the field of prison health from eight Europe…

The present study uses a prospective longitudinal research design to examine whether previously identified risk factors for prison interpersonal violence can predict violent prison misconduct in Northern Ireland (NI). Administrative data drawn from the records of 429 adult males imprisoned on November 22, 2017 were used to predict involvement in violent prison misconduct during a 1-year follow-up period. The results revealed that only a small number of previously identified risk factors were found to be significant in the NI context. Nationality, neighborhood deprivation, history of addiction,

On the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the overcrowding in prisons led to efforts to decarcerate in order to prevent and control outbreaks in prisons. This study analyses how public support for such exceptional measures are determined by cognitive and ideological factors known to create and maintain racial biases in the criminal system. Participants were asked to express their level of agreement with the early-release of hypothetical prisoners. Results showed participants to be less favourable to the early-release of Black compared to White prisoners, when they had committed a stereotypically …

PURPOSE: The modern prison system is not only a necessity to keep the public safe but also a mode of punishment for crimes. The correctional role of prisons is hampered in situations of mental illness, given that mental illness in the prison or correctional setting is a serious security risk. Few studies have given attention to the modifiable factors that may influence the mental health status of prison inmates, especially in developing countries. The purpose of this paper is to investigate emotion regulation (ER), dispositional mindfulness and duration of stay as factors in somatic symptoms a…

One of the most traumatic events that a person can ever experience in their lifetime is being detained. The prison dog programmes are the most successful prison rehabilitation programmes in the United States of America and consist of detainees training service dogs for other people to assist with different types of disability. It is a typical win-win system: inmates win as they connect with their deepest feelings of affection and solidarity while acquiring a concrete skill for their future release; people with disabilities win because they receive a dog to support their day-to-day activities;

BACKGROUND: Understanding individual-level changes in mental health status after prison release is crucial to providing targeted and effective mental health care to ex-prisoners. We aimed to describe trajectories of psychological distress following prison discharge and compare these trajectories with mental health service use in the community.
METHOD: The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) was administered to 1216 sentenced adult prisoners in Queensland, Australia, before prison release and approximately 1, 3 and 6 months after release. We used group-based trajectory modeling to ident

BACKGROUND: Improving mental health within correctional facilities, specifically to address self-harm behaviors, is a crucial endeavor. However, significant challenges arise when implementing evidence-based programs within this complex setting. Despite these hurdles, the Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) program has garnered recognition, notably in the United States, for its efficacy in tackling such issues. This study aimed to examine inmate profiles in prisons located in Catalonia, Spain, and to investigate the STEPPS program's effectiveness and imple…

This study examines the violence inflicted upon Palestinians in Israeli prisons during the initial phase of the "Iron Swords" war, which commenced following a Hamas attack on Israeli civilians on October 7, 2023. It investigates how wartime circumstances can intensify the use of torture and ill-treatment within prisons, with a particular focus on the impact on detainees who were not implicated in activities connected to the attack. Utilizing the case files of Palestinian security prisoners who lodged complaints of mistreatment with Israeli NGOs, the study uses descriptive analysis to categoriz…

BACKGROUND: One barrier to intervening in the global tuberculosis pandemic is that it is unknown whether Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission largely occurs through repeated close exposures among few contacts or many shorter-term contacts. Identifying sources of transmission is particularly urgent in congregate settings like prisons with high incidence of infection. Our aim was to identify the type of contacts associated with M. tuberculosis transmission risk within prisons.
METHODS: We conducted genomic surveillance in a prison system in Central West Brazil. We whole genome sequenced M. t…

People in prison often experience risk factors that can lead to poor sexual health which is compounded by social deprivation. In response, the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) has published the first national standards in the management of UK prisons, providing recommendations for commissioners, service providers, health care providers and people in prison. Nine standards have been devised which cover aspects of sexual health diagnosis and management, public health measures, and some reproductive health issues. The aim of these standards is to drive improvements in sexual …

By introducing and validating a novel conceptual framework that integrates social determinants of health with the stress process model, this study aims to provide actionable insights for improving mental health care in correctional settings. The research seeks to inform policymakers, prison administrators and mental health professionals about effective interventions and systemic reforms that can reduce recidivism, enhance rehabilitation and promote a more humane an…
