Triaging Interventional Pain Procedures During COVID-19 or Related Elective Surgery Restrictions: Evidence-Informed Guidance from the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP).

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the pain and suffering of chronic pain patients due to stoppage of "elective" interventional pain management and office visits across the United States. The reopening of America and restarting of interventional techniques and elective surgical procedures has started. Unfortunately, with resurgence in some states, restrictions are once again being imposed. In addition, even during the Phase II and III of reopening, chronic pain patients and interventional pain physicians have faced difficulties because of the priority selection of elective surgical

Evaluation of the impact of virtual reality as a non-pharmacological intervention for pain and anxiety during hematology procedures and chemotherapy: a controlled trial.

AIM: This study aims to assess the efficacy of Virtual Reality (VR) during painful procedures and chemotherapy (CT) in reducing pain and anxiety for patients with hematologic malignancies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A crossover design with an external control group was carried out. Participants were assigned to two groups: an intervention group, with a crossover design (n patients/procedures = 112), where patients underwent the procedure with standard care only, followed by washout period, then underwent the same procedure with VR. An external control group (n patients = 94, n procedures = 101) w

Effects of Virtual Reality Hypnosis on Pain and Anxiety in Oncology Patients During Port-a-Catheter Placement Procedure: A Pilot Study.

Background: Port-a-catheter (PAC) placement is a common procedure in oncology that, despite local anaesthesia, can induce patient discomfort, procedural pain, and anxiety. Virtual reality hypnosis (VRH), combining immersive virtual reality with clinical hypnosis, has been proposed as a non-pharmacological adjunct to reduce peri-procedural distress. Objectives: This pilot study aimed to explore the suitability of VRH during PAC placement and its potential effects on pain, anxiety, and VRH-related experiences, while investigating psychological variables associated with VRH engagement. Methods: I…

The Impact of Listening to Music During MRI-Fusion Prostate Biopsy Procedures on Pain and Anxiety Levels: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Combined biopsy (CBx) is a combination of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MpMRI)-targeted prostate biopsy (FBx) and systematic biopsy (SBx). CBx offers highly accurate diagnostic rates, but the increased number of cores taken and the longer procedure time may pose challenges in tolerability compared to traditional biopsies in terms of pain and anxiety. This situation leads to the need to evaluate pain and anxiety. METHODS: In a tertiary hospital in Turkey, 149 patients with suspicious lesions (PI-RADS ≥ 3 on MpMRI) who underwent transrectal CBx were included between May

Patient, operative and pain management factors influencing inpatient compared with surgical day care mastectomy procedures at a community hospital.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of maximizing same-day discharge after surgery to mitigate potential patient harms associated with inpatient admission and conserve valuable hospital resources. Adoption of same-day discharge after breast surgery, particularly mastectomy, has been slow despite recent research suggesting the physical and psychological benefits of same-day discharge after surgery. We sought to identify factors associated with inpatient compared with surgical day care mastectomy procedures at a community hospital in Vernon, British Columbia. METHODS: W

Screw Removal Can Resolve Unexplained Anterior Pain Without Recurrence of Shoulder Instability After Open Latarjet Procedures.

BACKGROUND: Anterior shoulder instability can be successfully treated using Latarjet procedures, although a small proportion of patients report unexplained pain. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose was to report the prevalence and characteristics of patients with unexplained pain without recurrent instability after open Latarjet procedures and to determine whether screw removal can alleviate pain. The hypothesis was that unexplained pain without recurrent instability might be due to soft tissue impingements against the screw heads and that the removal of screws would alleviate or reduce pain. Prostatic tissue pressure measurement as a possible diagnostic procedure in patients with chronic nonbacterial prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome.

Forty-two patients with chronic nonbacterial prostatitis (CNP) and twelve men without any urological complaints or history underwent intraprostatic tissue pressure measurement with a Stryker intracompartmental pressure monitor device. The pressures were measured under spinal anesthesia in connection with various surgical procedures. Tissue pressure was monitored at 10, 60 and 120 s after an injection of 1 ml saline. Significantly (P < 0.001) higher intraprostatic pressure values were registered at all the three time points in the patients with CNP compared to the controls. Our study shows that

The Effect of Immersive Virtual Reality on Anterograde Amnesia and Subjective Pain During Procedures: A Within-Subject Randomized Controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: Immersive virtual reality (VR) distraction reduces procedural pain. The current study explores whether immersive VR also reduces how much people can remember about a painful experience: anterograde amnesia for pain. METHODS: A within-subject, crossover design was used. Sixteen healthy adult volunteers participated. Each participant received 5 thermal stimuli (some hot, some cold) during no-VR and 5 stimuli during immersive VR distraction (treatment order randomized). They were instructed to memorize the order of hot and cold stimuli for a later memory test. After a brief delay aft…
