Proprioceptive Training for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Background: There is increased interest in proprioceptive training for knee osteoarthritis (KOA). However, little consensus supports the effectiveness of this intervention. Objective: This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effects of proprioceptive training on symptoms, function, and proprioception in people with KOA. Methods: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases were systematically searched from the inception dates to April 16, 2021 for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Data were pooled by calculating the standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% c…

Minor snRNA gene delivery improves the loss of proprioceptive synapses on SMA motor neurons.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an inherited neuromuscular disorder caused by reduced expression of the survival motor neuron (SMN) protein. SMN has key functions in multiple RNA pathways, including the biogenesis of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins that are essential components of both major (U2-dependent) and minor (U12-dependent) spliceosomes. Here we investigated the specific contribution of U12 splicing dysfunction to SMA pathology through selective restoration of this RNA pathway in mouse models of varying phenotypic severity. We show that virus-mediated delivery of minor snRNA genes sp

Compressive Garments in Individuals with Autism and Severe Proprioceptive Dysfunction: A Retrospective Exploratory Case Series.

(1) Background: Compression garments (CGs) are an adjuvant treatment for generalized joint hypermobility (GJH), including the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome/hypermobility types. The effects of CGs are likely to be related to better proprioceptive control. We aimed to explore the use of CGs in individuals with autism and severe proprioceptive dysfunction (SPD), including individuals with GJH, to control posture and challenging behaviors. (2) Methods: We retrospectively described 14 patients with autism and SPD, including seven with comorbid GJH, who were hospitalized for major challenging behaviors wit

Serotonin1B receptor-mediated presynaptic inhibition of proprioceptive sensory inputs to jaw-closing motoneurons.

The proprioceptive sensory inputs from neurons in the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (MesV) to masseter motoneurons (MMNs) play an important role in regulating masseter muscle activity during mastication. Several histological studies have shown that serotonin (5-HT) fibers densely innervate both the MesV and the trigeminal motor nucleus. However, the functional roles of 5-HT in the regulation of the excitatory synaptic inputs from MesV afferents to MMNs remain to be clarified. Thus, using the whole-cell recording technique in brainstem slice preparations from juvenile Wistar rats aged betwee

Increasing cutaneous afferent feedback improves proprioceptive accuracy at the knee in patients with sensory ataxia.

Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type III (HSAN III) features disturbed proprioception and a marked ataxic gait. We recently showed that joint angle matching error at the knee is positively correlated with the degree of ataxia. Using intraneural microelectrodes, we also documented that these patients lack functional muscle spindle afferents but have preserved large-diameter cutaneous afferents, suggesting that patients with better proprioception may be relying more on proprioceptive cues provided by tactile afferents. We tested the hypothesis that enhancing cutaneous sensory feedbac…

Elderly adults delay proprioceptive reweighting during the anticipation of collision avoidance when standing.

The ability to reweight visual and proprioceptive information is critical for maintaining postural stability in a dynamic environment. In this study, we examined whether visual anticipation of collision avoidance (AV) while standing could facilitate the down-weighting of altered proprioception in young and elderly adults. Twelve young (24.91±6.44years) and 12 elderly (74.8±6.42years) participants stood upright for 180s under two task conditions: (a) quiet stance (QS) and (b) standing while anticipating virtual objects to be avoided. In order to disrupt the accuracy of proprioceptive input part…

The intermuscular 3-7 Hz drive is not affected by distal proprioceptive input in myoclonus-dystonia.

In dystonia, both sensory malfunctioning and an abnormal intermuscular low-frequency drive of 3-7 Hz have been found, although cause and effect are unknown. It is hypothesized that sensory processing is primarily disturbed and induces this drive. Accordingly, experimenter-controlled sensory input should be able to influence the frequency of the drive. In six genetically confirmed myoclonus-dystonia (MD) patients and six matched controls, the low-frequency drive was studied with intermuscular coherence analysis. External perturbations were applied mechanically to the wrist joint in small freque

Proprioceptive sensory neuropathy in mice with a mutation in the cytoplasmic Dynein heavy chain 1 gene.

Mice heterozygous for the radiation-induced Sprawling (Swl) mutation display an early-onset sensory neuropathy with muscle spindle deficiency. The lack of an H reflex despite normal motor nerve function in the hindlimbs of these mutants strongly suggests defective proprioception. Immunohistochemical analyses reveal that proprioceptive sensory neurons are severely compromised in the lumbar dorsal root ganglia of newborn Swl/+ mice, whereas motor neuron numbers remain unaltered even in aged animals. We have used positional cloning to identify a nine base-pair deletion in the cytoplasmic dynein h…

A new surgery for congenital nystagmus: effects of tenotomy on an achiasmatic canine and the role of extraocular proprioception.

PURPOSE: Human eye-movement recordings have documented that surgical treatment of congenital nystagmus (CN) also produces a broadening of the null zone and changes in foveation that allow increased acuity. We used the achiasmatic Belgian sheepdog, a spontaneously occurring animal model of human CN and see-saw nystagmus (SSN), to test the hypothesis that changes induced by surgical interruption of the extraocular muscle afference without a change in muscle-length tension could damp both oscillations. METHODS: An achiasmatic dog with CN and SSN underwent videotaping and infrared oculography in

Maturation of peripheral nerves in preterm infants: proprioceptive and motor nerve conductions of tibial nerve.

Premature birth induces a profound change in the environmental factors affecting nerve maturation. The proprioceptive sensory and motor nerve conduction velocities (NCV) of the posterior tibial nerve, which reflect peripheral nerve maturation, have been measured in 3 groups of newborns. Two groups of premature (PT) babies, studied when they reached the expected date of birth (group I, gestational age (GA) at birth, 28-31 weeks, n = 8; group II, GA at birth, 32-35 weeks, n = 6) were compared to 9 normal full-term (FT) newborns. As previously shown, the motor NCV of PT babies at a post-conceptio

Exteroceptive and proprioceptive afferents of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos L.).

Central pathways converging upon the trigeminofacial motor nuclei of the mallard were studied in order to elucidate neuroanatomically the presumed influence of primary sensory trigeminal afferents upon jaw muscle activity. The techniques used included the Fink-Heimer I method after lesions, and axonal transport labeling following injections of 3H-leucine or of HRP for retrograde identification of the neurons of origin. A general description is given of the trigeminofacial motor complex. Jaw closer muscles are innervated by trigeminal motor neurons, and facial motor neurons innervate the jaw de

Prevalence of proprioception deficits in dogs visiting veterinary clinics for non-neurologic reasons: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: General proprioception deficits (GPD) detected during neurological exams aid in neurologic assessment and steer practitioners to consider neurological differential diagnoses. However, prevalence of GPD in without clinical signs of neurologic disease is limited. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: That elderly dogs have GPD that might be undetected in dogs not presenting for neurologic concerns and to determine GPD prevalence in dogs presented to a veterinary teaching hospital. ANIMALS: The study included 277 client-owned dogs presenting to the Cornell University without neurologic complaints.…

Condition-specific role of ankle proprioception in postural control in older adults: a stabilogram diffusion analysis approach.

This study examined whether Stabilogram Diffusion Analysis (SDA) parameters differ between younger and older adults across sensory conditions, and whether reduced ankle proprioceptive acuity correlates with SDA parameters in older adults, specifically when standing on a foam surface with and without visual input. Fifty-three healthy adults (25 older) participated. Ankle proprioception was evaluated through Kinesthesia Threshold (KT) and Joint Repositioning Error (JRE), and static postural control was measured with a pressure platform under four conditions (foam/firm × eyes open/closed). SDA qu…

Early improvement in shoulder external rotation proprioception after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair: an AMEDA-based quantitative assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Rotator cuff injury often disrupts shoulder proprioception. However, early postoperative recovery of external rotation proprioception after arthroscopic repair lacks quantification via ecologically valid tools. This study aimed to quantify early improvement in shoulder external rotation proprioception following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair using the Active Movement Extent Discrimination Apparatus (AMEDA), and to identify preoperative factors associated with postoperative proprioceptive improvement. METHODS: We included thirty-one patients with unilateral rotator cuff injury who…
