Mycobacterium abscessus infection in a case of recurrent orbital implant exposure.

Exposure is one of the most frequent complications of porous orbital implants, while infection is rarely observed. Atypical mycobacteria are ubiquitous germs of mostly variable pathogenicity. A patient with recurrent orbital implant exposure is described, in whom a final diagnosis of Mycobacterium abscessus infection was made on culture of the orbital implant remnant at its removal. In orbital implant exposure, infection with unexpected organisms should be considered and in these cases only the complete removal of the implant may allow the socket to settle.

The development of bacterial biofilms on indwelling urethral catheters.

The biofilm mode of growth has been implicated in the majority of human bacterial infections. In the urinary tract, notable biofilm-associated infections include prostatitis, chronic cystitis, struvite urolithiasis, and catheter-associated infections. Biofilms protect the causative organisms from host defences and antimicrobial therapy. Biofilm formation has traditionally been considered to result from adhesion and capsule formation by adherent microorganisms. Recent work has shown that a large number of genes are activated during this process, some of which have been associated with twitching

Evaluation of (99m)Tc-ciprofloxacin scintigraphy in a rabbit model of Staphylococcus aureus prosthetic joint infection.

UNLABELLED: Ciprofloxacin, a quinolone antibiotic drug, binds to DNA topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase of various bacteria. Thus ciprofloxacin labeled with (99m)Tc could potentially act as a specific marker allowing discrimination between infection and sterile inflammation. We evaluated these properties on a rabbit model of prosthetic joint infection previously validated. We compared the images obtained in 2 groups of animals: rabbits with infected (G1; n = 6) and uninfected (G2; n = 7) prosthesis. METHODS: Partial right-knee arthroplasty was performed on 13 New Zealand White female rabbits, wi

Knowledge and practices about sterilization and disinfection.

AIMS: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the knowledge and practices employed for infection control in dental laboratories. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A preformed questionnaire comprised of 16 questions related to infection control measures was prepared. This questionnaire based survey was then conducted among dental technicians of 60 dental colleges in East India. Data were then recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: Majority of impressions/prosthesis were carried in plastic bags (93.8%) by laboratory attendants to the laboratory. The responses revealed that majority of impressions were rece

Postoperative death associated with a reverse prosthesis.

The mortality rate after total shoulder arthroplasty, and specifically after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, has not received much attention in the literature. Although complications of the reverse total shoulder arthroplasty are well known, fatalities secondary to complications related to the unique features of the reverse prosthesis have not, to our knowledge, been previously reported. We report the case of an elderly man who developed shoulder instability after the implantation of a reverse prosthesis followed by disassociation of the glenosphere from the baseplate. After a reoperation

[The triple perineal operation with prosthesis. First 100 cases results].

The authors describe the technique of Triple Operation for Prolapses with Prostheses for the surgical cure of genital prolapse using a recto-vaginal interposition prosthesis for cystocele, rectocele and suspension of the vaginal dome by a posterior retro- and trans-levator muscle strip. The preliminary results over a continuous series of 100 patients operated on between June 2001 and June 2003 showed perioperative complications (7 bladder injuries) and postoperative complications (4 vaginal erosions related to the prosthesis including one that was secondarily infected, and a hematoma with seco

[Prosthetic valve endocarditis after double valve replacement].

This is a report of a patient who underwent re-AVR due to prosthetic valve endocarditis after double valve replacement (MVR, AVR). A 54-year-old female was admitted to other hospital on April 14, 1990, because of high fever, progressive anemia, and cardiomegaly. The patient was hospitalized to our department urgently with the diagnosis of prosthetic valve endocarditis. Arterial blood culture grew methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis. Echocardiography showed a vegetation at the disc of the mechanical valve in the mitral position, but we could not find any vegetation or thrombus ther

Indications for Penile Prosthesis Revision: Lessons Learned to Limit Technical Causes of Reoperation.

INTRODUCTION: Reoperations are necessary in approximately 30% of penile prostheses over 15 years following original implantation. AIM: To determine the most common indications for initial penile prosthesis reoperation at our institution and to describe technical alterations that have improved postoperative outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients who underwent penile prosthesis reoperation surgery at a single, high-volume Canadian center between 2006 and 2018 was performed. Patient demographic information, prosthetic device factors, and surgical complications were analyzed.

Surgical technique of a transcutaneous osseointegration prosthesis system (TOPS) for transtibial amputees.

Transcutaneous osseointegration prosthetic systems (TOPS) are intended to provide stable skeletal attachment for artificial limbs after extremity amputation and is an alternative for socket attachment. TOPS for individuals with limb amputation using osseointegration implants (OI) has proven to consistently and significantly improve quality of life and mobility for the vast majority of amputees, previously using a socket prosthesis also experiencing socket-related problems. As with any implant, complications such as infection, aseptic loosening, or implant fracture can occur, which may necessit

Increased and normalized uptake of 18F-FDG in a case of bone periprosthetic infection treated by antibiotics.

UNLABELLED: We report the case of a 69 years old man with left hip prosthesis, who presented clinical, biochemical and imaging signs of periprosthetic infection treated with linezolid, an antibacterial agent of the oxazolidinone class. Two weeks after this treatment, a fluorine-18-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) scan showed increased uptake in the skeleton and also increased uptake in several focal areas in the spine and near the prosthesis and the surgical wound on the left gluteus medius. Bone marrow biopsy was negative; meanwhile th

Long-term followup of uncemented tumor endoprostheses for the lower extremity.

Between 1982 and 1989, 100 primary lower limb reconstructions were done using the Kotz Modular Femur Tibia Reconstruction System after resection of a malignant tumor. In 32 patients a proximal femur prosthesis was implanted, in 40 patients a distal femur prosthesis was implanted, in 19 patients a proximal tibia component was implanted, in four patients a total femur prosthesis was implanted, and in five patients a total knee prosthesis was implanted. The Kaplan-Meier estimate of the overall survival rate of the prostheses was 85% after 3 years, 79% after 5 years, and 71% after 10 years. The mo

Difficult to treat: are there organism-dependent differences and overall risk factors in success rates for two-stage knee revision?

OBJECTIVES: Failure after two-stage procedure for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a rare, but devastating complication. Some authors assume a correlation of underlying organisms and recurrence rate. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococci (MRS) and other organisms (quinolone-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, rifampicin-resistant Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, and Candida) are meant to be "difficult to treat" (DTT) with an inferior outcome for two-stage revision. In addition to the type of bacteria, some more risk factors seem to be present. The aim of this study was (1) to detect a differen

Editor's Choice - Cryopreserved Allografts for Arterial Reconstruction after Aorto-Iliac Infection: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Native and aortic graft infections are rare, but they represent one of the most life threatening complications of vascular surgery. Several materials and surgical approaches have been developed so far. Among them, cryopreserved allografts have been proposed as a treatment option. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the role of cryopreserved allografts for arterial reconstruction after aorto-iliac infection. METHODS: The current meta-analysis was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.

Posterior dislocation of a cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty following an acute bacterial infection.

BACKGROUND: We report a rare complication of posterior dislocation of a cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty following an acute bacterial infection. The mechanism of dislocation proved to be septic loosening of the femoral component and a tear of the posterior cruciate ligament near to the femoral insertion site. The tear arose during the treatment of acute septic arthritis following total knee arthroplasty when the patient attempted full weight-bearing with the affected limb in a semiflexion position and twisted the knee. METHODS AND RESULTS: Successful treatment was provided with subs
