Family Health Conversations in HIV Nursing Care: A Qualitative Case Study on Supporting a Closeted Gay Filipino Man in the Philippines.

This article examines the use of Family Health Conversations (FamHC) in the care of a closeted gay Filipino man recently diagnosed with advanced HIV. In the Philippines, stigma rooted in religious and cultural conservatism presents significant barriers to care for men who have sex with men. Cultural values such as kapwa (shared identity), hiya (shame), and utang na loob (debt of gratitude) shape disclosure decisions and caregiving dynamics. FamHC, a relational nursing intervention, supports open dialogue, emotional validation, and collaborative caregiving. In this case, FamHC facilitated HIV d

Tailoring peripartum nursing care for women of advanced maternal age.

Births to women of advanced maternal age have increased dramatically over the last decade in both the United States. The majority of women who deliver their first baby after age 35 are healthy and experience positive birth outcomes. According to current research, primigravidas over 35 tend to be educated consumers. Their physical and psychosocial needs differ from those of the mother in her 20s, due to advanced age and factors related to difficulty conceiving and life circumstances. This paper presents (a) an overview of the possible risks to outcomes of childbearing for women over the age of

Barriers to Palliative Care for Terminally Ill Children in a Developing Country Cancer Hospital: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric palliative care (PPC) aims to improve the quality of life for children with life-limiting illnesses and support their families by addressing physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. Globally, significant barriers to PPC delivery include limited integration into health systems, inadequate provider training, restricted access to pain medications, and communication challenges. These issues are particularly pronounced in low- and middle-income countries, where cultural, infrastructural, and resource constraints further complicate care. Despite growing recogniti

Lived experiences and perspectives of women who had undergone perinatal loss in Nairobi county, Kenya: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: This study explored the lived experiences and perspectives of women who had suffered a perinatal loss in Nairobi county, Kenya. Existing research works have established that perinatal loss often comes with a significant psychosocial burden, which has been made worse by negative cultural beliefs and practices. Despite this, perinatal loss grieving is rarely recognised or socially legitimated in many countries. This study aimed to shed light on the experiences of bereaved women to come up with effective interventions and combat the stigma associated with perinatal loss. METHODS: The

Implementing a trauma-informed intervention for homeless female survivors of gender-based violence: Lessons learned in a large Canadian urban centre.

Gender-based violence is associated with an elevated risk of physical and psychological harm for girls and women. This study examines service user and provider experiences of a trauma-informed, peer-facilitated group psychosocial intervention (Peer Education and Connection through Empowerment [PEACE]) targeting female-identified youth experiencing homelessness and gender-based violence. Participants were recruited among service users and providers of the intervention, delivered in Toronto, Canada. We conducted 19 semi-structured interviews between May and October 2017, engaging 12 service user

The ongoing legacy of Indigenous family separation: Long-term outcomes of child welfare involvement among American Indian and First Nations youth.

BACKGROUND: Despite policies designed to preserve family structures, Indigenous children in the U.S. and Canada remain disproportionately removed from their homes and communities. This systemic removal represents an ongoing form of historical trauma with intergenerational consequences, yet research on its long-term psychosocial effects remains limited. OBJECTIVES: To examine the prevalence of foster care and adoption among a sample of Indigenous youth and their associations with psychosocial outcomes in early adulthood. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data come from a community-based participatory

A conceptual model of cancer care and lived experiences in adolescents and young adults with cancer: results from the multi-national European STRONG AYA project.

PURPOSE: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs, 15-39 years) with cancer face unique medical, psychosocial and developmental challenges. Existing conceptual models help explain AYA cancer experiences but are often limited by age or national context. The aim of this study was to develop a comprehensive conceptual model reflecting the diversity and complexity of AYA cancer experiences across Europe. METHODS: Within the STRONG AYA project, an exploratory qualitative study was conducted. Fifty-two semi-structured online interviews were completed with AYAs with lived experience of cancer and healthca

Meta-Pharmacologic Support and Scaffolding for Obesity Therapy.

Obesity is a multifactorial endocrine disease. Novel hormone receptor modulators are now available for its treatment. This does not mean, however, that obesity can be managed or cured by pharmacotherapy alone. Multidimensional support and scaffolding are required to attain and sustain optimal outcomes with drug therapy. In this communication, we provide a systematic coverage of the various aspects of support that are needed. We term them metapharmacologic, as they extend beyond the realm of conventional pharmacology. These include biomedical (medical, endocrine, pharmacotherapeutic), lifestyle

Embodied robots in rehabilitation-oriented interventions for older adults with disability or cognitive impairment: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Robots are increasingly used in later-life care. However, existing reviews often combine applications such as companionship, telepresence, medication support, monitoring, psychosocial support, traditional AI, and rehabilitation within a single body of evidence. This conceptual overlap makes it difficult to interpret the rehabilitation-specific evidence base. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to map empirical studies on embodied robots used in rehabilitation-oriented interventions for older adults with disability or cognitive impairment and to clarify the operational boundary between reh

Attachment avoidance and health-related quality of life: Mediating effects of avoidant coping and health self-efficacy in a rehabilitation sample.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: The onset of chronic illness or disability (CID) can be conceptualized as a threat that activates the attachment system. Moreover, the waxing-and-waning nature of CID-related symptoms and management of acute and chronic illness stressors means that the attachment system may be repeatedly activated. Contending with repeated threats to health (i.e., security) can complicate psychosocial adjustment to CID and can negatively impact health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Adjustment to CID requires intrapersonal resources, such as adaptive coping and self-efficacy. In spite of at

Towards person-centred maternal and newborn care in Ethiopia: a mixed method study of satisfaction and experiences of care.

BACKGROUND: Person-centred maternal care is associated with positive experiences in high-income countries. Little is known about the transferability of this concept to non-Western, low-income settings. We aimed to explore women's experiences of care and investigate satisfaction with antenatal care (ANC) in relation to person-centred care and unmet psychosocial needs in rural Ethiopia. METHODS: Design: facility-based, convergent mixed-method study. A cross-sectional survey included 2079 consecutive women attending ANC at eight health centres. Service satisfaction was measured using a 21-item v

Beyond the hospital: family caregivers' experiences in supporting stroke recovery in Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke remains a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability globally, with profound consequences for both survivors and their families. In Ghana, where formal post-stroke rehabilitation and long-term care services are limited, family caregivers play a central role in supporting stroke survivors. However, there is limited qualitative evidence on how caregivers understand stroke and experience caregiving within their sociocultural context, creating a gap in knowledge needed to inform context-specific interventions. METHODS: This qualitative study explored the experiences
