Designing a School-Based, Complex Public Health Intervention to Improve Iodine Awareness in Adolescents in Six Countries.

Background: Iodine is an essential micronutrient required for foetal development, cognitive function, and metabolic regulation; however, suboptimal iodine status remains a public health concern in Europe and other regions. Improving food literacy related to iodine may support healthier dietary choices during adolescence, a critical life stage for establishing long-term habits. This intervention development study describes the development of The ABC of Iodine Teaching Programme within the EUthyroid2 project, designed to enhance iodine-related knowledge and awareness among adolescents aged 13-17

The Nurse-Family Partnership: evidence-based public health in response to child maltreatment.

Too many Canadian children are exposed to child maltreatment-neglect, emotional maltreatment, exposure to intimate partner violence, and physical and sexual abuse. Retrospective data indicates that 32% of Canadian adults have experienced childhood abuse. There is evidence that child maltreatment is associated with a wide array of negative health consequences across the life span. These consequences expand across physical, mental, developmental and social domains to include suicide, substance abuse, anxiety, depression and physical health problems. Experts have asked for coordinated national le

Public health surveillance response following the southern Alberta floods, 2013.

OBJECTIVE: In June of 2013, southern Alberta underwent flooding that affected approximately 100,000 people. We describe the process put in place for public health surveillance and assessment of the impacts on health. METHODS: Public health surveillance was implemented for the six-week period after the flood to detect anticipated health events, including injuries, mental health problems and infectious diseases. Data sources were emergency departments (EDs) for presenting complaints, public health data on the post-exposure administration of tetanus vaccine/immunoglobulin, administrative data on

Practice Bulletin No. 152: Emergency Contraception.

Emergency contraception, also known as postcoital contraception, is therapy used to prevent pregnancy after an unprotected or inadequately protected act of sexual intercourse. Common indications for emergency contraception include contraceptive failure (eg, condom breakage or missed doses of oral contraceptives) and failure to use any form of contraception (). Although oral emergency contraception was first described in the medical literature in the 1960s, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first dedicated product for emergency contraception in 1998. Since then, several n

Critically engaging vulnerability: Rethinking oral health with vulnerabilized populations.

This paper is the third in a series of narrative reviews challenging core concepts in oral health research and practice. Our series started with a framework for Inclusion Oral Health. Our second review explored one component of this framework, looking at how intersectionality adds important complexity to oral public health. This current manuscript drills into a second component of Inclusion Oral Health, exploring how labels can lead to 'othering' thereby misrepresenting populations and (re)producing harms. Specifically, we address a common oral public health label: vulnerable populations. This

Identifying core competencies for community oral health practice among dental hygienists: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Community oral health practice increasingly requires dental hygienists to perform prevention-oriented, population-based, and interprofessional roles beyond traditional chairside clinical care. However, existing competency frameworks primarily emphasize clinical practice or general professional competencies, and an integrated competency framework specifically designed for community oral health practice remains unavailable. This study aimed to identify core competencies for community oral health practice among dental hygienists through a scoping review. METHODS: A scoping review was

Role of Private Practice Dietitians in Working With People With Mental Illness: A Constructivist-Interpretivist Qualitative Interview Study.

AIMS: This study aimed to explore dietitians' views, experiences, and perceived barriers and enablers to working with people with mental illness in Australian private and public mental health settings, with a focus on clarifying the contribution of private practice dietitians to mental healthcare. METHODS: A combination of convenience and snowball sampling was used to recruit dietitians who primarily work in private practice or public mental health sectors. Virtual semi-structured interviews were conducted in two discrete 3-6-month blocks between 2021 and 2024. A constructivist-interpretivist

Costing the national clinical guidelines for prostate cancer control and management in South Africa: Public sector perspective.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer worldwide and the sixth leading cause of cancer deaths in men. In South Africa (SA), PCa accounts for ~13% of male deaths. The direct medical costs associated with PCa diagnosis and treatment according to the national clinical guidelines for prostate cancer control and management are not documented. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the direct medical costs for localised PCa diagnosis and treatment according to the national clinical guidelines for prostate cancer control and management in SA. METHODS: The direct medical costs for diagn

Public health actions to mitigate long-term consequences of child maltreatment.

Child maltreatment (CM) is highly prevalent and one of the most injurious conditions that children may experience. Because it is often-clandestine, it is difficult to assure that existing prevention and treatment mechanisms reach those in need. CM's consequences may take a long time to be recognized and expressed. We discuss the need to increase public health actions when the person reaches adulthood to mitigate the consequences of CM. We propose three intervention targets to alleviate CM-related difficulties in adults: emotion regulation, social functioning, and self-concept. By enhancing awa

Neglected tropical diseases: progress towards addressing the chronic pandemic.

The concept of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) emerged more than a decade ago and has been recognised as a valid way to categorise diseases that affect the poorest individuals. Substantial progress in control and elimination has been achieved and policy momentum has been generated through continued bilateral, philanthropic, and non-governmental development organisation (NGDO) support, and donations of drugs from pharmaceutical companies. WHO has defined a Roadmap to reach 2020 targets, which was endorsed by member states in a World Health Assembly Resolution in 2013. NTDs have been included

Human rabies--Alberta, Canada, 2007.

On April 26, 2007, a patient from Alberta, Canada, died after 9 weeks in an intensive care unit (ICU) from encephalitis caused by a rabies virus variant associated with silver-haired bats. This report summarizes the clinical course of disease in that patient, who was treated using the Milwaukee Protocol, an experimental treatment protocol similar to one used for the rabies survivor described in 2005. This report also describes the subsequent epidemiologic investigations by three regional public health departments in Alberta. Rabies continues to be a cause of human death in the developed and de

Dracunculiasis (guinea worm disease).

Dracunculiasis (guinea worm disease) is a parasitic disease that is limited to remote, rural villages in 13 sub-Saharan African countries that do not have access to safe drinking water. It is one the next diseases targeted for eradication by the World Health Organization. Guinea worm disease is transmitted by drinking water containing copepods (water fleas) that are infected with Dracunculiasis medinensis larvae. One year after human ingestion of infected water a female adult worm emerges, typically from a lower extremity, producing painful ulcers that can impair mobility for up to several wee

Public health system integration of avoidable blindness screening and management, India.

In India, 73 million people have diabetes and 3.5 million infants are born preterm. Without timely screening, there is a risk of visual loss due to diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity in these two groups, respectively. Both conditions are emerging causes of visual impairment in India but there is no public health programme for screening or management. Pilot projects were initiated in 2014 to integrate the screening and management of these conditions into existing public health systems, particularly in rural communities and their referral networks. The World Health Organization'
