Optimization of bio-oil production from microwave co-pyrolysis of food waste and low-density polyethylene with response surface methodology.

The applicability of waste to energy conversion technique is facing many issues because of current waste management practices. Focusing on the segregation issue of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) from food waste (FW), microwave (MW) co-pyrolysis of FW and LDPE was investigated in this study. Multifactor optimization of the operating parameters, viz., residence time, LDPE in feed and temperature, was done with response surface methodology to achieve maximum bio-oil yield with a low total acid number (TAN). Bio-oil yield and TAN varied from 17 to 42 wt% and 16-45 mg KOH/g respectively, in variou

Two-step pyrolysis enabled by bentonite catalysis for the co-production of bioactive humic acid and functional carbon-clay composites.

Converting biomass waste into artificial humic substances (AHS) is critical for sustainable waste management and for mitigating soil organic matter depletion. However, conventional artificial humification routes typically couple depolymerization, condensation and oxidation, which limits yield, structural control and by-product utilization. Here we develop an atmosphere-programmed two-step pyrolysis strategy, assisted by bentonite catalysis, that decouples biomass depolymerization under an inert atmosphere from subsequent oxidative reconstruction under short-duration oxygen-limited conditions.

Production of Bioadsorbents via Low-Temperature Pyrolysis of Exhausted Olive Pomace for the Removal of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Media.

In this work, biochars were produced by pyrolysis of exhausted olive pomace and evaluated as low-cost adsorbents for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The biochar obtained at 400 °C for 1 h, which exhibited the best adsorption performance, was characterized by FTIR, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, SEM-EDX, and proximate analysis, revealing a mesoporous structure with a relatively low specific surface area but enriched in surface functional groups, likely due to the partial degradation of lignocellulosic components. Adsorption experiments were conducted to optimize

Application of Simultaneous and Coupled Thermal Analysis Techniques in Studies on the Melting Process, Course of Pyrolysis and Oxidative Decomposition of Fused Triazinylacetohydrazides.

The effect of the structure of promising antioxidant agents with prospective medical use, i.e., unsubstituted and para-substituted annelated triazinylacetic acid hydrazides, on their melting points, thermal stabilities, pyrolysis and oxidative decomposition stages and the type of volatiles emitted under heating with the use of DSC and TG/DTG/FTIR/QMS methods was evaluated and discussed. The melting point of the investigated compounds increased with an enhanced number of electrons (directly correlated with their molecular weight). Melting enthalpy values were determined and presented for all th

Slow pyrolysis of Terminalia catappa L. municipal solid waste and the use of the aqueous fraction produced for bovine mastitis control.

The Terminalia catappa L. tree is an ornamental and shade tree producter of a large amount of biological waste sent to landfills. Therefore, this plant constitutes so-called municipal solid wood waste (MSWW), which causes undesirable impacts on the environment, such as the generation of methane through the action of microorganisms. Sustainable solutions for the proper use and disposal of MSWW are a topic that has assumed great relevance at present due to the high quantities of MSWW generated worldwide. Pyrolysis constitutes an attractive alternative for the sustainable use of MSWW to produce h

Praseodymium-Doped Cr2O3 Prepared by In Situ Pyrolysis of MIL-101(Cr) for Highly Efficient Catalytic Oxidation of 1,2-Dichloroethane.

The development of economical catalysts that exhibit both high activity and durability for chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) elimination remains a challenge. The oxidizing and acidic sites play a crucial role in the oxidation process of CVOCs; herein, praseodymium (Pr) was introduced into CrOx catalysts via in situ pyrolysis of MIL-101(Cr). With the decomposition of the ligand, a mixed micro-mesoporous structure was formed within the M-Cr catalyst, thereby reducing the contact resistance between catalyst active sites and the 1,2-dichloroethane molecule. Moreover, the synergistic i

Refinement of a microfurnace pyrolysis-GC-MS method for quantification of tire and road wear particles (TRWP) in sediment and solid matrices.

Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) are produced by abrasion at the interface of the pavement and tread surface and contain tread rubber with road mineral encrustations. Quantitative thermoanalytical methods capable of estimating TRWP concentrations are needed to assess the prevalence and environmental fate of these particles. However, the presence of complex organic constituents in sediment and other environmental samples presents a challenge to the reliable determination of TRWP concentrations using current pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) methodologies. We are unawa

Co-pyrolysis of dyeing sludge and pine sawdust in a fluidized bed: Characterization and analysis of pyrolytic products and investigation of synergetic effects.

Co-pyrolysis of dyeing sludge (DS) and pine sawdust (PS) was carried out in a fluidized bed pyrolyser. The results revealed that addition of PS increased the yields of condensate and gas, and dramatically improved pore structure of co-pyrolysis char, enhancing immobilization of the metals, nutrient and pollution elements. Catalysts (Na-ZSM-5 and HZSM-5) significantly reduced tar and coke, strengthened the integrity of pore structure. Yield of nitrogen-containing compounds declined sharply from 88.66% to 8.14% when 25% of PS was added. Addition of 50% PS promoted ring opening to generate chain

Performance and emission analysis of blends of bio-oil obtained by catalytic pyrolysis of Argemone mexicana seeds with diesel in a CI engine.

Because of their adaptability and user-friendliness, internal combustion engines are widely used for a variety of purposes, including the generation of consistent power as well as transportation. As a result, the question of whether or not these engines can make use of bio-oils is an important one today. Bio-oils derived from biomass pyrolysis differ significantly from those derived from petroleum-based fuels and biodiesel. They could, however, be valuable alternatives to fossil fuels in order to attain a carbon-neutral future. Bio-oil obtained from catalytic pyrolysis of Argemone Mexicana see

Analysis of condom evidence in forensic science: Background survey of the human vaginal matrix using DRIFTS and pyrolysis-GC/MS.

Condom traces are increasingly detected from victims of sexual assault, mostly from vaginal swabs. Protocols have been developed for the analysis of silicone-based condom lubricants using DRIFTS-FTIR and py-GC/MS, but very little research is concerned with the background contribution of the vaginal matrix itself. The present contribution would be an asset for more fundamental research on condom residues in the vaginal matrix, as well as for interpretative purposes in the forensic area. This study investigated vaginal matrix residues using Diffuse Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectros

Pyrolysis and Combustion Chemistry of Pyrrole, a Reference Component for Bio-oil Surrogates: Jet-Stirred Reactor Experiments and Kinetic Modeling.

Fast-pyrolysis bio-oils (FPBOs) obtained from lignocellulosic biomass are gaining attention as sustainable fuels for various applications, including the transport sector and power production. A significant fraction of bio-oils is constituted by nitrogen-containing compounds (N fuels) that should be considered when developing surrogate models for FPBOs. Moreover, the content of N fuels in FPBOs is expected to strongly contribute to the production of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) directly from fuel-bound nitrogen (fuel NO x ), in addition to the thermal NO x formation pathways typical of high-temperat

Analysis of the complexation behaviors of Cu(II) with DOM from sludge-based biochars and agricultural soil: Effect of pyrolysis temperature.

Pyrolysis temperature is one of the important factors that affect the structure and composition of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM), which may impact interaction between biochar-derived DOM and Cu(II). Moreover, soil application of biochars pyrolyzed at different temperatures is supposed to cause different complexation behaviors between soils-derived DOM and Cu(II). However, little is known about these aspects. Here, incubation experiments and quenching titration experiments were conducted to explore such pyrolysis temperatures-dependent changes in sludge and sludge-based biochar

The rapid determination of bromadiolone in liver and blood plasma by in-injector pyrolysis gas chromatography - Ion trap tandem mass spectrometry.

The unintentional poisoning of off-target animals by bromadiolone, a second generation anticoagulant rodenticide, is an undesirable outcome requiring sensitive analytical methods. In this study, a rapid and sensitive method for the determination of bromadiolone in liver and blood plasma by means of gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry without need for derivatization was developed. The method is based on the in-injector pyrolysis of bromadiolone and subsequent gas chromatography coupled with ion trap tandem mass spectrometry with electron ionization. Sample preparation inclu

Pyrolysis-Tuned Dual-Function Biochar-Derived Dissolved Organic Matter Drives Redox Coupling for Deep PFAS Defluorination in UV/Sulfite Systems.

The growing use of biochar is increasing the release of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM) in surface waters. Concurrently, remediation of persistent per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remains challenging. Although natural DOM can both photosensitize and scavenge reactive species, how BDOM modulates PFAS transformation in waters is unclear. Here, we show that low-level BDOM (1 mgC L-1) unexpectedly promotes PFAS defluorination in the UV/sulfite (UV/S) system by simultaneously boosting hydrated electron (eaq-) production and generating oxidizing radicals via triplet states

A two-stage predictive modeling and data augmentation approach for optimizing co-pyrolysis products from oily sludge and solid wastes.

Co-pyrolysis of oily sludge (OS) and solid wastes supports resource recovery and safe residue disposal. However, complex interactions between feedstock composition and operating parameters hinder process prediction and design. In this study, a two-stage predictive modeling and data augmentation approach was developed using literature-derived data covering oilfield, storage-and-transportation, and refinery oily sludge. In the first stage, a multi-task gradient boosting regression (GBR) model predicted oil, gas, and char yields with high accuracy (test R2 > 0.96). For oil yield prediction, the f

Aquatic Toxicological Assessment of Solid Pyrolysis Product (SPP) from Synthetic Textile Feedstock Relative to Biochar, Carbon Black, and Activated Carbon.

Pyrolysis as a waste conversion process appears relatively feedstock-agnostic, yielding carbonaceous solid pyrolysis products (SPPs) plus condensable gases. Ground SPPs may substitute for or improve upon other carbon commodity particles, yet the environmental hazards of textile-derived SPPs have not been characterized. Here, we produced SPP particles from textile waste feedstock and from wood (biochar) using a pyrolysis process that could scale to waste management. We used electron microscopy, spectroscopy, gas adsorption, and standardized biochar analyses to characterize the chemical, morphol

Catalytic Pyrolysis of Copper-Incorporated Nylon Fishing-Net Waste: Thermal Behavior, Evolved-Vapor Analysis, Kinetics, Thermodynamics, and Artificial Neural Networks.

In this research, the catalytic pyrolysis properties, kinetics, thermodynamic characteristics, and composition of the vapor evolved from the thermal decomposition of copper-incorporated nylon fishing net (CuFN) waste were investigated. The analysis was performed on CuFN composed mainly of nylon and copper (3 wt.%) as an anti-corrosion element. A comparative catalytic study was conducted using two types of zeolite catalysts, ZSM-5 (CuFNz) and Y-type (CuFNy). Reaction complexity in the presence of both catalysts was investigated through linear and nonlinear kinetic approaches, along with estimat
