Although pineal "synaptic" ribbons (SR) are frequently examined by means of quantitative electron microscopy, their functional significance remains unclear. Lithium treated rats become polyuric and at the same time develop pronounced dilatations of distal tubular segments and characteristics enzyme histochemical changes. In the present study we have compared lithium-polyuric Wistar rats with lithium treated rats in which the polyuria was prevented either by administration of a vasopressin analogue or by water restriction. The kidneys were studied using enzyme histochemistry and light microscope morphometry. The soleus and extensor digitorum longus muscles of the hindlimb and the flexor digitorum profundus muscle of the forelimb were studied in ad libitum-fed control and age-matched diet-restricted male rats at various ages from weaning to senescence. Growth of individual muscles was accomplished by fibre hypertrophy and not hyperplasia. To determine the effects of increased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure on neuronal morphology, obstructive hydrocephalus was induced by injecting kaolin into the fourth ventricle and cisterna magna of 1-day-old rats. The animals were sacrificed 10 to 12 days later, at which time severe ventriculomegaly and cortical thinning were apparent in the parieto-occipital region. Tissue from this area was processed by rapid Golgi methods. Well impregnated pyramidal neurons were examined by light microscopy, and their somatic and dendritic features compared to those of age-matched littermate controls.

We have studied under optic and electronmicroscopes the alterations of glomeruli in contralateral kidneys of rats with experimental hydronephrosis. Forty-eight Wistar rats, divided into two groups (control and experimental) were used. They were sacrificed 3, 6, 9 and 12 days after ureteral obstruction. There was a slight hypertrophy of glomeruli and hiperplasia of other components accompanied by a increased development of podocytes.

We investigated the effects of paraquat products both containing and devoid of emetics on the cardio-respiratory functions of Wister rats. Anesthetized rats were administered intravenously 0.46 ml/kg Gramoxone, a commercial product containing 24% paraquat and an emetic. Paraquat equivalence equalled 110 mg/kg body weight. ECG and respiratory curves were recorded with a polygraph. Fifteen seconds after injection, A-V block and bradycardia occurred and the heart stopped beating soon after. Inoculation of metallic tin powder produced marked proliferation of plasma cells and Russell body cells in draining lymph nodes. Prior, but not concurrent, administration of a soluble tin salt in the drinking water prevented the plasma cell hyperplasia. Various Na, Zn, Ag, and Cu salts were not inhibitory. The inhibitory effect of tin salts was detected as long as 2 months after the pretreatment was stopped. If the plasma cell response to metallic tin were due to an immunologic reaction, then the inhibition by a soluble tin salt may be a form of immunologic tolerance.
