We measured MR images of the liver of Long-Evans Cinnamon (LEC) rats with pathologic correlation and assessed the effectiveness of MR imaging (MRI) for diagnosis of noncancerous hepatic lesions. Hereditary renal carcinomas (RCs) develop in virtually all Eker rats by the age of one year. Investigation of extrarenal primary tumors occurring in Eker rats late in life (at 2 years) additionally revealed pituitary adenomas (17/31 = 54.8% (carrier) vs 7/32 = 21.9% (non-carrier siblings of affected animals), P < 0.01), sarcomas of the spleen (21/31 = 67.7% vs. 0/32 = 0%, P < 0.001) and sarcomas (of probable stromal origin) of the uterus (8/17 = 47.1% vs. 0/15 = 0%, P < 0.01). Thus, the Eker rat might provide a novel animal model of cancer predisposition syndromes.

Aromatase activity and progesterone metabolism were studied in ovaries of scorbutic ODS rats hereditarily unable to synthesize ascorbic acid (AsA). When ODS rats were kept on an AsA-deficient diet for 23 days, the scurvy developed with undetectable levels of AsA in ovaries. A significant increase in ovarian aromatase activity was observed in scorbutic ODS rats. However, there was no difference in the production of testosterone from progesterone between ovaries of scorbutic and ascorbutic ODS rats. These data suggest that AsA may play a role as a modulator of aromatase activity in vivo.

Type VI secretion systems (T6SSs) have been identified recently in several Gram-negative organisms and have been shown to be associated with virulence in some bacterial pathogens. A T6SS of Yersinia pestis CO92 (locus YPO0499-YPO0516) was deleted followed by investigation of the phenotype of this mutation. Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus [GBS]) is the leading cause of neonatal pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis. Porcine pseudorabies has long existed in China and is a serious threat to the Chinese farming industry. To understand the prevalence and genetic variation of the porcine pseudorabies virus (PRV) and its pathogenicity in Yunnan Province, China, we collected 560 serum samples across seven Yunnan Province regions from 2020 to 2021 and detected anti-gE antibodies in these samples.
