A pilot study found that DDT breakdown at the GC inlet was extensive in extracts from some--but not all--samples with high organic carbon contents. Evans syndrome is a rare disorder with presentations of autoimmune hemolytic anemia and immune thrombocytopenia, in the absence of any underlying cause. Here, we reported a case with a history of Evans syndrome for seven years. A persistent scrotal ulcer with severe pain occurred for two weeks. He called at our emergency room because of a painful, necrolytic cutaneous ulcer over the scrotal region. A biopsy showed sterile dermal neutrophilia with lymphocytic vasculitis, and pyoderma gangrenosum was impressed. The patient received steroid treatment and recovery after one month.

In my practice as a recovery room nurse, I had observed anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists wave an opened alcohol preparation pad under a patient's nose when he or she complained of nausea. When asked, "Why?'' the response often was, "Because it works.'' The following article describes the use of inhalation of isopropyl alcohol as a treatment for postoperative nausea and vomiting. Because alcohol swabs are so readily available, and certainly less expensive than some of the newer antiemetics on the market, this simple nursing intervention was worth investigating.

Intrinsic focal tumor of the medulla oblongata is an uncommon entity. Of the 51 cases presenting for treatment of a brainstem glioma between 1984 and 1990, only 7 were confined to the medulla. Radical excision was performed on each patient. Four of the first 5 patients who were extubated in the recovery room had CO2 retention, with associated respiratory arrest and hypoxia. Three suffered permanent cranial nerve deficits as a result. It is the purpose of this report to describe the serious complications of medullary surgery and to make recommendations as to how they may be avoided.
