Cognitive impairments in adult mice with constitutive inactivation of RIP140 gene expression.

Receptor-interacting protein 140 (RIP140) is a negative transcriptional coregulator of nuclear receptors such as estrogen, retinoic acid or glucocorticoid receptors. Recruitment of RIP140 results in an inhibition of target gene expression through different repressive domains interacting with histone deacetylases or C-terminal binding proteins. In this study, we analyzed the role of RIP140 activity in memory processes using RIP140-deficient transgenic mice. Although the RIP140 protein was clearly expressed in the brain (cortical and hippocampus areas), the morphological examination of RIP140(-/

Neurophysiological, imaging and neurobiological markers of central fatigue in multiple sclerosis.

Central fatigue affects 80% of patients with multiple sclerosis, with 60% of them claiming it as the most disabling symptom. Current research often independently explores neurophysiological, structural, or functional imaging and biological underpinnings of fatigue, thus lacking a multidimensional perspective. Here, we used a multidimensional approach to investigate the functional, structural and biological underpinnings of fatigue in MS and to assess the relative contribution of each factor. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 41 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis and

Immediate and short-term effects of continuous theta burst transcranial magnetic stimulation over contralesional premotor area on post-stroke spasticity in patients with severe hemiplegia: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke spasticity is an important complication that greatly affects survivors' functional prognosis and daily activities. Increasing evidence points to aberrant contralesional neuromodulation compensation after brain injury as a possible culprit for increased spasticity in patients with severe stroke. Hyperactivity of the contralesional premotor area (cPMA) was supposed to be highly correlated with this progression. This study aims to demonstrate the immediate and short-term efficacy of continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS) targeting cPMA on upper limb spasticity in severe

Smartphone App-Delivered Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Adolescents: Protocol for a Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Concussion in children and adolescents is a significant public health concern, with 30% to 35% of patients at risk for prolonged emotional, cognitive, sleep, or physical symptoms. These symptoms negatively impact a child's quality of life while interfering with their participation in important neurodevelopmental activities such as schoolwork, socializing, and sports. Early psychological intervention following a concussion may improve the ability to regulate emotions and adapt to postinjury symptoms, resulting in the greater acceptance of change; reduced stress; and recovery of soma

Functional Somatotopy of Lumbar Dorsal Rootlets and its Role in Selective Recruitment via Lateral Spinal Cord Stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Lateral spinal cord stimulation (LSCS) is a promising approach for restoring somatosensory feedback in lower-limb amputees, but its spatial selectivity remains limited. Percepts often spread to unintended regions of the residual limb, and reducing electrode contact size may not improve focality. This study investigated whether the anatomical organization of lumbar dorsal rootlets (DR) imposes fundamental constraints on LSCS selectivity. APPROACH: Acute neurophysiology experiments were performed in six adult cats. Both LSCS and individual DR stimulation were conducted in the same an

An Italian multicenter retrospective-prospective observational study on neurological manifestations of COVID-19 (NEUROCOVID).

Neurological manifestations of COVID-19 have been described in both single case reports and retrospective scanty case series. They may be linked to the potential neurotropism of the SARS-COV-2 virus, as previously demonstrated for other coronaviruses. We report here the description of a multicenter retrospective-prospective observational study promoted by the Italian Society of Neurology (SIN), involving the Italian Neurological Departments, who will consecutively recruit patients with neurological symptoms and/or signs, occurred at the onset or as a complication of COVID-19. Hospitalized pati

Frontal and Parietal Activities Associated With Different Inhibitory Processes in a Stroop-Matching/Stop-Signal Task: A Channel-Wise fNIRS Study.

Inhibition is an important component of cognitive control that encompasses multiple processes, such as interference control, inhibition of prepotent responses and suppression of ongoing responses. Frontal and temporoparietal regions of the cortex are implicated differently in inhibitory functions. The Stroop-matching/stop-signal task is a recent task that uses Stroop stimuli and stop-signals to create conditions that allow the investigation of the three forms of inhibition aforementioned. The task provides a way to distinguish the effect of these inhibitions as well as their interactions using

Sudomotor dysfunction in patients with gluten neuropathy.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gluten neuropathy (GN) is a common neurological manifestation of gluten sensitivity (GS), characterized by serological evidence of GS, while other risk factors for developing neuropathy are absent. The degree of small fiber dysfunction in GN has not been studied in depth to date. Small fiber involvement may lead to pain, thermal perception abnormalities, and sweat gland dysfunction. Sudomotor innervation refers to the cholinergic innervation of the sympathetic nervous system through small fibers in the sweat glands. The aim of our study was to assess the sudomotor function

Electrically Evoked Auditory Brainstem Responses in Children Fitted with Hearing Aids Prior to Cochlear Implantation.

This study investigates the effect of hearing aid use on the peripheral auditory pathways in children with sensorineural hearing loss prior to cochlear implantation, as revealed by the electrically evoked auditory brainstem response (EABR). Forty children with hearing aids were recruited. Half of them had normal inner ear structures and the other half had inner ear malformations (IEMs). The EABR was evoked by electrically stimulating the round window niche (RWN) and round window membrane (RWM) during the cochlear implantation operation. The onset age of hearing aid use was significantly correl

Assessing Task-Dependent Neurophysiology During Virtual Reality Treadmill Training in Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Feasibility Study.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) often experience residual mobility deficits that can be improved with treadmill and virtual reality interventions. However, previous studies have not measured the underlying neurophysiology during these interventions nor assessed if acquiring such data is feasible in a TBI population. Thus, the primary purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of using portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure neurophysiology during a treadmill task and a treadmill with virtual reality task. SETTING: Data were collected

Immediate and sustained increases in the activity of vagal preganglionic neurons during exercise and after exercise training.

AIMS: The brain controls the heart by dynamic recruitment and withdrawal of cardiac parasympathetic (vagal) and sympathetic activity. Autonomic control is essential for the development of cardiovascular responses during exercise, however, the patterns of changes in the activity of the two autonomic limbs, and their functional interactions in orchestrating physiological responses during exercise, are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to characterize changes in vagal parasympathetic drive in response to exercise and exercise training by directly recording the electrical activity of
